Sari Style

Continuing her campaign to focus on hygiene and hand washing to reduce child mortality, Kajol attended a discussion today at Columbia University wearing a fresh off the LFW runway Sabyasachi look.

The sari + pearls look may have been done to death by Sabya and some some of you may even feel a Vidya deja vu but the combo is one that I really like, no matter who wears it.

  1. Although this is a marginally better look than the flower in the hair black saree outing, that horizontal striped blouse is making her look W-I-D-E!!

  2. I understand Sabya’s mission to bring grace and old-world demure-ness back in fashion….but seriously gracefull does not equal to fuddy-duddy or matronly!!! I admire how graceful (and NOT matron-like) Sridevi , Rani Mukherjee,Nandita Das or Mini Mathur look in a sari or a suit!

  3. The blouse is SOOOO BAD!! seriously!!! it doesnt work on Kajol at all. Almost all the designers favored by Bollywood actresses ( Sabya, MM, Abu-Sandeep) do not know how to dress the person according to their body type.If not the designer, atleast the stylist should take care of this!

  4. the model looks like an elegant 50’s Maharani on a holiday in the French Riviera. Kajol looks like she wore her varsity team tee underneath then stitched 2 saris together because there wasn’t enough material. plus the satin and net are ‘film festival’, not ‘public policy discussion’. Our ladies are so petrified of appearing ‘desi’ that they’re willing to pay gazillions to look bad, rather than buying a simple handloom silk and looking good.

    • Could not have sait it better! The last sentence is a sad and deplorable truth of mostl Indian celebrities.
People only flock to buy designer wear – anything with a Sabya, MM etc tag goes – no matter how preposterous it looks. A regular Rs.2000 saree would have been so elegant and appropriate- and if someone wore it, people will ask – is it from mango or whatever?

    • She’s wearing a sari so she’s obviously not scared of looking desi. She could have just worn a dress or a pants suit but she chose an Indian outfit.

The problem is with these designers who are making clothes that only look good on skeletal 6 feet tall women. They are not translating well at all to normal bodies and that’s definitely a fault of the designer himself.

Who on earth would look good wearing a horizontal striped sweater with yards of fabric wrapped on top of that?!

  5. Kajol need to wear blouses/clothes that suit her body type. That striped blouse and that sari looks hideous on her. Seems like she didn’t find anything to wear and she chose randomly out of the closet.

  6. Not saying kajol is old but this is a young persons saree, what with the stripes, satin and net and all. Someone like sonam or dia mirza could carry this look. Dare i say kajol is a little wide for that blouse also?

  7. ummm….while i like the idea of the outfit, i really do think it is inappropriate for the event. i think she should’ve gone with business casual for this event. the subject was serious, the forum was a very prestigious educational institution. somehow, her outfit is a tad partyish for the occassion.

  8. I dont know if this striped blouse will look flattering on anyone…. Plus, only recently, I just read various magazine articles about how Kajol has become extremly fit and is now in great shape. This blouse gives the complete opposite effect. Sigh, why has Kajol become such a clothes horse..she does not “own” anything she wears. For all those commentors comparing her to Ash – atleast Ash has her personal style that she is truly comfortable with.

  9. Kajol has always been and is very comfortable with her body type. She has been in the industry for a very long time, with that being said I’m sure she knows what stripes do to a woman. Nevertheless, she went for it because WHO WOULD NOT GO FOR THE BEST PIECE IN THIS COLLECTION OF SABS? Kudos to her for not giving a hoot. #notasermonjustathought

  10. This is what I looked like when at 12 I sometimes tried out my mum’s chiffon sarees over the t-shirts I would normally wear. Hilarious then, hilarious now. But at least I did it behind closed doors.

  11. The blouse while eww on its own looks marginally decent on the skinny model, but looks really pathetic on Kajol.

She looked much better in Suraj Hua Madhdam and MM’s same old clothes.

  12. Not feeling the striped t-shirt blouse at all. I like Sabya, but I am tired of seeing the same Sabya sarees over and over again on every bollywood star. HHC should have a “vote” feature.

  13. That blouse in and of itself is hideous (it is way too sporty to go with the satin and lace of the saree) – def. something more dainty or intricate would have brought the whole look together (that is, if you also ignore the fact that the saree looks like a lace skirt with a satin dupatta wrapped around it).

More importantly, this blouse is all wrong for Kajol – she is rather well endowed on top, and given that, this blouse only would have worked if she had toothpicks for arms, or if she went sleeveless. Thankfully, the former is not the case. But it confounds me that Kajol is not thinking about what looks best on her, and also what looks best, period. Maybe she liked this outfit, but if that were me, I would have (maybe) kept the saree, but def. have thought twice about using that blouse, and certainly if that blouse, how to adjust it to make Kajol stand out. This did nothing for her. So sad to see people (actors, stylists, whoever they may be) just buy into a designer’s look without thinking about how they can make it their own.

    • Kajol is very loyal to her designers! Just like the black Sabs number, she wanted to stay true to what Sabs presented on the runway with this piece.

  14. I think Sabya is out and final. he might as well call his collection 60 plus (or wannabe 60 plus) I cant stand his designs any more, he’s completely out of juice, and the juice he has left is 30 years too old.

    saree + pearls = classic
    saree + pearls + Tshirt = BS

  15. i’m not that much fond of this sari, however i think it’s totally fine for people participating in conferences or functions at prestigious universities or institutions to wear saris. chanda kochchar wears saris every single day and she runs a bank. i don’t think kajol needed to wear business formals here. a sari has a formality and prestige of it’s own.

  16. I like this look. It is fun and funky. I for one love the striped blouse+pearls and think it makes kajol look fresh. The model was staged perfectly! the sunglasses add the perfect touch 🙂

        • We do have to keep in mind how photos can severely skew our perception. Her posture is very relaxed and this photo does not do justice, especially because the color is not true. Perhaps Priyanka and Payal can dig up another photo of her? Kajol has been in the industry long enough to know wrong from right. My take on it is if you were offered one of the most trendiest pieces off of a designer’s most recent collection, why not just take the risk and rock it? Btw, I’m not sure if you understand the meaning of “fashion victim”…but she definitely maintains her own style roots and just adds a little umph here and there. She styled Sabs’ piece meticulously from her makeup to hair to jewelry to shoes.

  17. I like it on the model and Kajol as well. not just a different combination of the saree and blouse but very nice as well. Not for everybody though. Deepika for one would look amazing in it and carry it off really well.

  18. Horrific! Who are these stylists? Do they not know what clothes go well in different settings? This monstrosity just makes her look clueless. Kajol, please take a leaf from Nandita Das and wear simple elegant clothes.

  19. I love the runway look. Very European glam meets Indian royalty meets the dizzy 50s. But that tee/blouse is doing Kajol’s frame no favors.
