Sari Style

Aww. Love that both Jaya and Aishwarya wore their saris the Bengali way (keeping with the theme of the movie)… Love this appearance of Aishwarya’s especially.

P.S: Deepika too was at the music launch and was in character. Look inside for more.

  1. Aishwarya looks divine; the Bengali look has always been marvelous on her. Jaya Looks a lot like my mother here, so I can’t help but find her appearance adorable.

  2. AFTER LOOKING AT AISHWARYA IT SEEMS SOMETHING MISSING IN DEEPIKA…I AM NOT A FAN OF AISHWARYA’s AS FOR HER TALENT OR BEAUTY i can care less BUT HERE SHE LOOKS GREAT

        • Ash is lovely. But comparison here is hardly fair. Deepika has her hair oiled and tightly braided in 2 plaits, no less. She’s in a cotton, ordinary looking saree with the elbow length blouse. She still looks sweet. Whereas Aishwariya has her hair flat ironed, has a gold bling lovely saree with a gold blouse, some nice earrings and necklace on, makeup is fantastic too. These things surely make a big difference.
Deepika is a beauty and if dressed in finery , she’d be a fantastic parallel to Ash. I like both these women, so the ‘something missing in Deepika’ seems very unfair.

  3. OMG! Ash looks gorgeous & divine. The sari, jewelry and the hair everything is so put together. Deepika is adorable and lovely. Love the braids on her.

  4. All look beautiful in the traditional wear. I always like it when people go for traditional wear when they can.
Jaya simple & motherly in the white cotton sari.
Deepika simple & nice in the character attire.
Aishwarya is glowing in all the gold of sari & accessories.

  5. I like Jaya’s saree – and she is so much better when she dresses like the girl next door (ok lady) in her heroine heyday. Aishwarya’s saree has too much gold and also looks too much like she is in costume for the neit xt Rituparno film.

Oye Deepika, if you want to actually introduce revolutionary chic (ugh) cos of your movie, can it be at least authentic instead of this odd mess. Somehow I don’t think the lady in the Chittagong armoury raid wore this sari and took time off to get her nails done.

  6. Why just nail paint? They didn’t wear make up too and didn’t go out on launch and guess what max didn’t pose with a guy in front of camera unless married. 😉 ;).

  7. Jaya and Ash look divine..Deepika’s pose puts me off but otherwise she looks nice too.. She does’nt need to slouch but can relax her pose every now and then…

  8. I find Jaya ji’s drape more appealing. Aishwarya’s saree looks like its draped a bit differently. Looks like she has draped the pallu over her left shoulder twice. I’ve seen the second style also done occasionally, but I much prefer Jayaji’s drape.

Deepika, I guess, is the only one in these pics who is really “in character” hence the de-glamorized look. I don’t mind. We can take anything if you are “in character”. We survived Neha Dhupia’s recent atrocities, no?

    …well Almost anything 😉

  9. Aish’s sari with the excessive gold on it is just so OTT and like someone mentioned above essentially looks like gift wrapping paper. Not sure what there is to go so gaga over it about. Jaya’s look on the other hand is bit too plain for my liking. And Deepika as always – the less said the better IMO.

  10. Ash looks gorgeous, love that she is sticking to traditional sarees, and jewellery. They suit her the best. I still must say that this may have been a better look for Karva Chauth, and not for the music launch, esp when she knew that the others will be in simple clothes as per their characters.

    Jaya Bachchan looks adorable.

Deepika looks earthy and nice. She manages to look sweet without much make-up, jewellery and shine.

  11. As statuesque as Deepika looks – what was she thinking? I think she couldve easily done a less glamorized look without looking like someone’s ayah.

    • Umm, I believe freedom fighters did wear very simple sarees because you know they had other things on their mind – who knows maybe some Brits thought they looked like ayahs.

Also “looking like someone’s ayah” as a put down is class snobbery at its best – it appears certain personal comments are not allowed on HHC but stuff like this passes through. And btw I would rather look like my hard working, lovely ayah than someone decked up in designer duds that may or may not be acquired by dubious means.

Boy ! uumema your understanding is seriously twisted. So according to you if one can be called an angel then it is ok to call the same person demon/chudail or any such names. there is no difference seriously? what are you smoking girl ?

        • Discriminatory comments of any degree should not be taken lying down and to think that they are lack of sense of humour only goes to show lack of education and sensitivity. I am sure my domestic help won’t be happy to read such comments.
So what if this a fashion blog, why should it make us any shallower? 😉

      • I completely agree with you on it being a classist comment. I am sick of people commenting on someones look by degrading people who are working class, as if looking like a maid/ayah is the ugliest one can look. In terms of the look, as a Bengali woman myself, having seen the wonderful range of sarees that are out there, I think this is just a bit too blingy. Aish does look gorgeous. I would have gone with either just the earrings or the necklace and not both.

        • I agree.. I think that people should be careful when choosing their words.. saying things like “looking like someone’s ayah/cheap tv star/maid” whatever is in very bad taste. Things said in a derogatory manner is just plain bad, it has nothing do with someone’s sense of humour.

      I rest my case.

  12. Aish looks perfecto! the saree, the jewellery, the make up…simply gorgeous!!! hands down! I love how her footwear is in synch with the outfit..love love love! Jaya looks appropriately elegant in her get up. Well done, Bachchans. Now, what is with Deepika? Even for in character dressing, the color is drab, she could have used a cotton or stiffer fabric saree that lent some weight to her body. she looks like a stick (a tall one) in this get up and the two braids is plain ugly!

    • Yeah I love the kohlapuris on ash as well and hooray for the red bindi and the sindoor! Deepika’s bindi on the other hand is very oddly placed dot in the middle of her brows and as someone else mentioned her pose is quite awkward.

  13. Why does Ash want to always outdo the main person in all these music/movie launches. Afterall this was Deepikas movie and there was no reason for Ash to be all decked up. This happened during Paa pemiere too when she was overdressed compared to Vidya

    Reply
    • Given that deepika in in character, anyone half stylishly dressed would overshadow her …..

How wonderful does aishwarya looks ….. esp with the sindoor, she is just glowing …. i love when aishwarya wears traditional sarees ….

For some the gold might be too much but given that its the festive season, its just perfect ….. it is not that jhatku-tacky gold …. but the happy wife, festival season, traditional and classic gold …

      love 🙂

    • Exactly what i was going to say! It’s not Ash’s movie, so why is she dressed up ‘in character’? Otherwise, i don’t have anything against Ash, but weird that she didn’t dress in theme for the Halloween party, but should go all out here

      • Everyone attending the music launch was told to dress in Bengali style – even the journalist. It was mentioned in newspaper articles.

All the ladies including Kirron Kher and Gowariker’s wife were in festive outfits not just Jaya and Aishwarya.

Of course Deepika as a revolutionary character was not going to be blingy.

    • I agree…I don’t understand why on earth she’s dressed in blinding gold foil for the freaking MUSIC launch of a movie she isn’t even a part of?
Ugh. She looks soo OTT. Especially compared to Jaya Bachhan who looks 100x classier.

  14. This is one of my favourite appearances of Aish- she looks divine and cute concomitantly. I have a very soft spot for tant sarees. I hope she never wears any of those “designer” blingy sarees ever again!

  15. As great as both look, why would someone do this!!!
I mean its not her movie… why are these two women dying to steal the show. So not appropriate.
    Me no likey… poor deepika…

    • It was sort of the dress code; even Sunita Gowarikar wore a variation on the Bengali theme, pairing a red blouse with a white saree. The movie is set in Chittagong during an uprising.

      • the fact that everyone is talking abt how nice Ash looks and how pathetic deepika looks is what i have a problem with.
If Ash was mellowed down and played low for someone else’s movie, maybe we wodnt be comparing deepika with Ash… thats my point!

        Reply
        • Sorry but if Deepika doesn’t look nice then why to blame Ash. If other people feel overshadowd by Ash then why don’t they try to match up to her her. Now you mean to say that Ash should bring herself down just to make these other people around her look nice? That is strange.

    • I think in the industry if the actress is in ‘in character’ look it is accepted. No big issue in my opinion happened to all others too, Vidhya for Ishquia,Neha for recent movie ,what can you possibly imagine to wear to underplay them? 🙂

btw PnP : Kiran Kher was there too and wore a gorgeous red and white temple border saree. The saree and jewelry looked divine.
wait… i forgot both ash and jaya look gorgeous too.

  16. um, anybody out there notice how badly both the saris are draped? “dui pecher shari” is worn more neatly. this is just a hot mess, especially the gold sari.

are the bachchans in the movie too?

  17. Though this was just a music launch..Ash’s look is sooo festive..makes me miss home 🙁
PS- Both Mrs. Bacchans have henna on their hands..am guessing from the Karva-Chauth celebrations..

  18. Whether Ash should have outdone Deepika is debatable. But, she looks divine.
Is it a Kerala Kasavu Saree?. Because this zari border is very typical of Kasavu Saree. But this doesnt look handloomish. Is more tissuish…

  19. can someone please id whether its taant/ tussur/tissue sari tht Aish is wearing… i see henna on her hands (from Karva chauth i presume)…

ohh and if the leading lady is in character n comes to a music launch like this, then she can be rest assured that someone wearing the simplest garment would steal the show from her… cant blame Aish or Jaya for it..

  20. i dont like the Saree on aishwarya…it has too much gold..and i agree with someone who commented here that her saree looks like a gift wrapper..the way she draped it its even worse…but i cant stop admiring her face she looks so adorable in the bindi and sindoor:))

deepika’s saree is better and she draped it well..like her.

  21. ok im sorry, as gorgeous and radiant as Ash looks, her sari looks like it needs to wear shades. its nice, but bordering on garish. i’m married into a bengali family and have seen far more refined bengali (white, red and gold) sarees being worn around me. also, too much gold is’nt very typical of laal-paad saris, as they’re called. that’s mostly limited to banarasis only.

  22. call me old-fashioned, but somehow i don’t like seeing symbols like the sindoor, the mangalsutra or the bengali shankha-pola (which ash seems to be wearing) being reduced to accessories. i’ve seen generations of women invest these symbols with a lot of regard and meaning. it saddens me to see them used like regular bangles or necklaces.

  23. Aishwarya is OTT to begin with. Come on, she’s the most beautiful woman in the world. This sari is apt for her as I think it goes with her persona. Jayaji looks lovely too. Deepika, I have no complaints as she was in character so she was dressed according to the requirements of her movie which is nice.

  24. Well agreed that Ash does look good, but there’s just too much of gold going on. She should have left the gold in the saree do all of it, and toned down the blouse, clutch, shoes, AND the jewelry.

Jayaji actually looks much more put together, inspite of her match much – red clutch, sandals… everything.

This is off topic, but just a thought — Yes it is Abhishek’s movie, but does the whole family have to turn up at every event (that too in character) and steal the thunder?

    Reply
  25. I feel sorry for Deepika. I guess this is the peril of working with Abhishek. The entire Bachchan circus turns up, that too overdressed and hogging the limelight as usual. What Ash did here is not classy at all.

  27. All said and done, I prefer a traditional look over the oh so predictable Manish Malhotra-Rocky S-Sabyasachi saree trio. And yay to experimenting with sari drapes, everyone doesn’t have the balls to do so. Love Jaya and her Bengali style drape, remember how Celina had killed this look at Laila Khan’s wedding reception?

  28. Grudgingly admit Aishwarya’s gorgeousness. The sari, the jewellery, the makeup- everything is just the way I’d wear it. Love love LOVE.
Ms. Padukone looks like a praying mantis. I hope tht is’nt offensive. To the mantis perhaps.
