Odds Are?

She’s got so much potential and yet Ms. D’Souza sometimes picks the oddest outfits.

Odds are, Genelia started off with the tiered kurta/leggings/sandals and then suddenly realized that this is a formal event and threw in the dupatta to mask the casual outfit. Unfortunately, in a hurry, she forgot to remove the belt she put on for the casual look. 😛

Let’s hear your explanations. 😉

Thanks ‘shyba’ for the image tip-off.

  2. She sorta looks cute in it. Only she can get away with this outfit(?). Imho, it’s her awesom/warm smile which gets her brownie points every time.

  3. So you guys reporting from south films too now. I like it. She shouldn’t have bothered to make it formal because Hansika her co star was in the shortest dress.

    • For ppl who don’t know the Shriya Saran episode, here it is… Shriya had to apologize to the TN public for attending an event with her low-cut tops and mini skirt that rode up her knees, that too seated next to the TN chief minister himself…So genelia here is more aware of the story and chose to drape a duppata over the kurthi 😛

      • Well i don’t think “actual” public had a problem with it. She had to write a apology to Rajnikanth(with whom she wore the skimpiest possible clothes for the movie), the chief minister and the rest of the crew.:D

      • Err…Genelia has worn short dresses before, and so have several Kollywood actresses. Shriya had to apologize because she was at a religious function, not because she was seated next to the CM. I’m sure Genelia just felt like wearing an Indian outfit. We might be a highly conservative country, but we’re not the Taliban for heaven’s sake. She can wear whatever she wants to the premier 🙂

        • I meant it only on a lighter note.Just chill off Choclate Martini,…
And for ur info, Shriya was not at a religious function, it was the 200th celebration of Rajnikanth’s film Sivaji…U can wear whatever u want while shooting inside 4 walls and not in public events…We expect some class…Is this too much to ask for!!!!!!!!

    • umm no…genelia has been in many bollywood movies and in tons of commercials ..so she’s well known all over not just in south..

      • @deewani: Preety was referring to reporting from South films which in this case was for “velayutham”, a tamil movie launch and not about covering Gen as a south indian actress. 🙂

        • Aara, you’re the one who needs to tone down the moral policing and relax. Short dresses can be classy, and no, the public does not have a right to dictate how a women dresses, that is her choice alone. Saying that she can dress one way on screen (to cater to male lust) and has to dress another way in public is just hypocrisy. In civilized democracies the world over women have the freedom to dress how they want. Making them apologize for showing skin is disgraceful, there is nothing on “a light note” about it. In India I find it very sad that I cannot walk on the streets in a pair of shorts without men heckling me, although in Bangkok or Hong Kong or Singapore it would have been perfectly normal. This is such a wonderful country, but it is sad that women do not have much freedom to dress how they please without other commenting.
If this incident had taken place in another country, there would have been a public outcry over how oppressive it was that this poor woman had to apologize for a short dress.
I dont understand how you can bring up a topic like this and expect people to treat it casually. Had this been any other forum, there would have been much more of a backlash. Please try to be a bit more broadminded, after all you are a woman too and limiting another woman’s rights is really sad. There is nothing classy about this kind of backwardness.

          • So in Thailand or Bangkok or whatever country you belong, u can dress skimpy and sit next to the president or whosoever is elderly. Being in a short dress is different from an ultra mini skirt with the top showing cleavages….That being said, the same case is permissible in India too, but its upto the celebs to show some respect to elders and that does’nt mean hypocrisy. If dressing classy is backwardness, u better live in your own cave…Why this silly long explanation, try to get clearly what I am upto!!!!

          • ThaiExpat you hit the nail on the head. Aara, the point is that a woman has the right to dress the way she pleases, I really dont see what ‘elders’ have to do with it. To say that a woman has to dress in a certain way and then make her publicly apologize for what she was wearing IS backwards and disrespectful to women, there is no two ways about it. What she wears is her business and her body is not something disgraceful that she has to keep it covered up to risk offending someone.

Dressing classy is not about being covered from head-to-foot, sexy can be classy too, like ThaiExpat said. Conservatism is not the only way to be classy. And yes, chauvinsim is backward. Trust me,there are millions of people the world over who would find your attitude backward, and they dont live in caves.

And again, as ThaiExpat said if you want to keep the conversation light there was NO need to bring this issue up at all.

As for the hypocrisy thing: you said it is okay for her to dress a certain way in her film but not in public, that is a double standard and that is hypocrisy

          • P.S: If you are so concerned about beign classy, why not stop saying rude things like “you better live in your own cave” and using phrases like “top showing cleavages”?

        • Yes. Thank you, Akshara. That is what I meant. I was talking of the function being the launch of her Tamil film in TN. I know Genelia does Hindi films.

          • CM, I get u…U always pick upon people…This time its me…
The point i was trying to bring here is that, there is no need for Genelia to go entirely covered…May be she took the Shriya Saran episode in the wrong sense…U and me know that she is not always in a duppata drapped dress…She has worn a lot of minis here and there., Did I go and lament over it…Unless u get the meaning of my first post , this argument will keep on dragging….Gud luck to u and ur expert friend!!!

  4. This is a horrible ensemble. No excuses when you have a fleet of stylists and makeup artists at your disposable. Has she not heard the expression–Dress for your day!?!

  5. Ha, ha!!! Self deprecation at its extreme!!!!
Looks like a fourth grader in a school skit who rushed down from stage after her performance, hugged mom and pulled her dupattah to wear it on herself!!!! Or ‘G’ was headed to a costume party with the theme ‘weirdest outfit’ with the promise of a prize for the winner 🙂

  6. Haha….Maybe she got the idea of MIX and MATCH style in a wrong way 🙂 She found one duppata from a salwar; leggings and belt from a long t-shirt and paired them up with a kurthi, caz they are all of the same color 😛

  7. Normally I would find this outfit hideous, especially on a young film star whose style should be atleast a little glam. But Genelia is so darn adorable, she manages to pull it off. Now if only she would channel her bubbly personality in some fun, flirty dresses

  8. ok, she needs a stylist. a tunic with that length and a belt so low with tights looks hideous in itself. that tunic’s made for leggings not full tights. the dupatta is really beautiful but pairing it with such a western outfit??? she seriously need a psychiatrist!!! but neck up she is real cute!!!
