In Rohit Bal

In my opinion, a long pallu on a sari is equivalent to a dramatic train on a gown on the red carpet.

Now, you can understand why I am a tad bit disappointed on seeing Deepika on the red carpet in this white Rohit Bal sari. I am not saying that she doesn’t look good, which she does… And, if this was a dinner event minus the hoopla it would be fine but it is such a huge red carpet event…

    • what with that pose in the second pic?
Looks so messy like her saree is all pulled up because she is getting ready to do house hold chores.

      • This makeup makes her look very harsh. The unnatural shape of her eyebrows, brown lipstick, brown contacts, the unecessary watch .. its not good enough for Cannes. I think its great she’s wearing a saree but it should complement the event … and really everyone here shows up in designer outfits with one major stand-out thing .. whether that is the colour of the dress, its fabric, the shape etc. and the rest of the things in your body are meant to complement that. This is so doable with a saree. She looks like she’s off to a book event ! The drape is lacking badly.
        SIGH

        • ugh. i know! why do people drape the saree like that?! it ruins everything. Add to that the short pallu, the awful make-up. Deepika looks so much better ‘normally’, you know when she’s not trying TOO hard to look great.

          Reply
    • Yes, the make-up is horrendous. The sari isn’t suitable for the Cannes red carpet, she’s pulled it up too tight & her pose is all wrong in the second picture. She has a very Western body structure – tall & lean. She would’ve looked much better in a gown!!

  1. She looks amazing- whats not to like. A regal sari is perfect for Cannes- you just have to move away from stereotypical views about a red carpet dress.

    • I think our grouse is not against the fact that deepika chose to wear a sari, but that she wore THAT sari, and draped it so lamely. Hello! she wears strapless gowns at Filmfare of all places!! But at Cannes she decides to go with this look!

      Reply
      • I agree, the saree is very filmy and so is the blouse. and the drape is terrible. This girl is beautiful and elegant and the drape makes her look cheap. The hair is nice, i wish they have gone a bit easy on the make up too.

Wear a saree anytime, it would be awesome, but not like this, reminds me of a certain Ms. Chopra on the red carpet sometime back in a white saree-gown weirdness.

  2. Pretty Face, Beautiful Saree, but missing the punch for a big red carpet event. A dramatic train could be created via a looong pallu..i was soo looking forward to it. Still would say a good attempt.

  3. oh God! someone teach this woman the right posture.. why is she jutting out her upper like that for? and why is the sari draped so low? it just destroys the look of the garment.

it’s a shame.. the sari is pretty otherwise.

      • Actually that’s just a misconception. Not reflecting light does not mean they don’t photograph well. Plenty of dark eyed models (not local Indian obviously… desis can’t think beyond light eyes=beauty) look smoking on international covers. It’s bad photographers who started this trend because they aren’t good enough to know how to handle their strobes/light equipment.. The way you handle your flash is the key to the catchlights in the eyes, not the colour.

The real beauty is in the shape of the eyes.. blue/brown whatever eyes will not look good if you’ve got blonde eyelashes or tiny eyes. Many women would kill for wide, curved eyes and desis have that quality but they’d rather hide behind EXTREMELY fake looking EYE POPPING lenses that look crap.

I do a bit of photography on the side and it ANNOYS me to see these bad bad lenses. It doesn’t even make sense because the end result needs to look nice and it doesn’t..

        • I agree. And there’s no such thing as black irises – rather, they’re dark brown. It constantly annoys me when people (in particular, Indians) think dark eyes are unattractive. It reeks of colonial hangover syndrome, especially since in the past, Indians did not consider pale eyes attractive.

          Reply
          • i agree about the colonial hangover and the love for light eyes. i am often reminded of that when aishwariya’s publicity machine goes ONNNN and ONNNN about her blue-grey (or was it green) eyes as such a selling point of her beauty.

            Reply
        • dont know about the photography part, but the eyes- the shape is one of the good things about Deepika and that is not captured well here. I just googled up a picture of her to look for eye color – pretty pretty black eyes.

          Reply
          • classical Urdu poetry is rife with praises of dark eyes. We can all recall verses extolling the beauty of ‘siyah’ eyes and hair. Lately more than our colonial hangover it is the globalized image of western beauty (light hair/eyes) that have been governing our definition of beauty. Even black models and actresses in the west resort to bleaching their skin and hair to fit into the mould of what constitutes universal ‘beauty’. A sad state of affairs this….

            Reply
      • Completely not true. I know so many gorgeous Indian girls with gorgeous dark eyes which photograph 100 times better than these horrible and obvious contacts.

      • If i am not wrong, there is no such thing as “black eyes”. The darkest colour is brown.

        yes yes… i am a geek!

        Reply
    • What makes you think that it’s not her natural eye color? Hazel eyes are very common in India. I come from a family where a majority have inherited light colored eyes; my nephew was born with blue eyes which has now turned into light grey; my grandpa had hazel eyes and so do I and my siblings -lighter than Deepika’s . I have come across many more Indians with either hazel or light brown eyes. Not all Indians are dark skinned or eyed…some of us are dark and some aren’t . Of course, it would be stupid to consistently use light colored contacts which make you look like a zombie – I mean, like Celina.

      Reply
      • Well well well..we’ve all seen Deepika’s eye color and that aint hazel or whatever..she got dark dark dark eyecolor and in these pics she’s wearing contact lenses.

        Reply
      • It’s very easy to tell when someone is wearing inexpensive colored contacts, as is the case with Deepika. I’m not denying that there are light-eyed Indians – there are very many, in fact. As someone who passes more for Middle-Eastern than Indian, I know of the vast diversity in Indian people. But we’ve seen many pictures of Deepika with her natural eye color, which is dark brown.

  5. Love her hair and makeup but I don’t understand the need for the expanse of belly on show. It looks unflattering and inelegant – she would have looked gorgeous with a longer blouse and a longer pallu. I’m glad she wore a sari at Cannes though, good on her! The sari is actually a good one.

    Reply
  6. Her face looks good but I am amazed at the shabbiness of the drape, especially the way the pallu is uneven at the bottom.. if it is meant to be left loose, then why put it on the shoulder. Is it to show skin? And if it is meant to be formally pinned on the shoulder, why so shabby?

so i’m relieved here. she looks really good and so does the sari.
i see your point about the pallu but this is the very first time a young starlet has worn a sari well on the cannes red carpet so that’s good enough for me 🙂

    • Good that she’s at least wearing a sari coz she’s an Indian and should represent India well. wearing a gown you cannot represent India! She’s looking great, the sari, the make-up, the jewellery, the hair minus those light contact lenses. What’s with all these Indian celebrities and light eyes? why are they dying to have light eyes? they think dark eyes aint beautiful? actually when one’s dark skinned like Deepika her own real dark eye color looks lovely on her compare to her light contact lenses that she always wear and look so weird..dark skin, dark hair and light eyes duhhhhhhhh. I’ve seen her not wearing contact lenses and her own real eye color is deep and lovely and look staring and shining as stars..in my opinion she should quit wearing these fake eyecolors.

  9. This makes me so MAD. I mean, is it really that hard to get your basics like a good lip color anda proper pallu length right?Shouldnt you (and your team of stylists and designers) put in ATLEAST that much effort when you are representing your country at one of the world’s biggest and most glamourous film events?

She needs to fire her makeup artist, pronto. Also, I think she works the low waist on the sari.

  10. I’m willing to overlook the pallu, but not liking the high riding(?) blouse and the mile-long bare midriff. The saree itself is nothing to write about.

    Reply
    • I think that probably has something to do with her height. The saree may have been short for her height & therefore the low low waist. same thing with the blouse…she’s probably wearing a free size blouse (by Rohit Bal, yes, standard free size) and that’s a bit short for her height.

      my guess.

      Reply
      • You’re right. That’s one of my pet peeves. At 5’10, i’m quite tall myself. I love sarees but always have to make sure they are long enough after tucking in a couple of inches. Even my blouses need to be tailored specially to look just right. Or i’ll look like i’m wearing a dress shirt and ankle length skirt and not in a good way.

That said, i can’t understand why she’d agreed to wear an ill-fitting blouse and saree to such a big event. What a waste of that gorgeous face and body.

  13. Alright..to begin with I am glad to see more Indian representation at Cannes. Now as for Deepika…the sari is not red carpet worthy…this does not mean she had to wear something over the top but at least something that would be worthy of a first time red carpet appearance for her at this event. The draping is very tacky. When you try to show the entire midriff the ‘pallu’ at the end suffers and looks really bunched up..The blouse looks sexy only from the back..the front looks as if its dying to ride up any minute..The makeup is not perfect..the skin tone is not evened out properly..can you make out the darkness around the mouth and jawline?

  14. I think the breadth of the saree is actually a bit too short for her! the border at the bottom should be brushing the red carpet, not be 1/2 an inch too high. but there’s absolutely no forgiving the pallu.

  15. She looks stunning, a true indian beauty!!

HER EYES, hair, earings and saree border I love!!!!

Could have been better but she looks sooo stunning that it makes up for the average saree.

If she had covered the “midriff” more would have been better, but since she is a “supermodel” I think people expect sexy skinshow on an international platform. Afterall she represents YOUNG SEXY INDIA!! lol

Lucky Deepika has a natural grace that stops her from ever looking trashy.

She probably had no help….like an army of helpers helping wth everything if she was in India. Probably the security and contractual conditions didn’t allow her stylists etc. to accompany her…afterall Cannes is very high end with very stringent security.

    • She had a styling team from Chivas (whom she’s representing) there to help her.

I’m not sure, but I think Rohit Bal went along to. And most stars , especially one’s representing brands have styling teams, so Im sure there was no security problem

  21. why do most starlets insist on wearing a white/ ivory sari on the international red carpet…suddenly color shy??? deepika is such a gorgeous girl and could’ve done so much more with this appearance!! i do like the look in general except the color, drape and belly baring nature of the sari. her hair looks a little greasy too. that said, she has such a gorgeous face, such a banging body and such a sweetnes about her that she does justice to just about anything she wears!!!

  23. Not a great red carpet look…kudos to her for wearing a sari but its not working because for one the sari looks ordinary, color is bad and it looks messy the way it has been worn.

The jewelley choice is also not anything exceptional. Apart from the hairdo which I like, nothing else seems to look good.

  24. I think it falls flat! She should have worn something that would make a long lasting impression..not just for her but especially after announcing in the media that she would be at the festival and she in a way is representing India. Its ironic because Bal’s outfits look one-off and are eye catching on the runway.

If I didn’t know who Deepika Padukone was, I’d take one look at this picture and decide she was some B-grade famewhoring starlet which she actually ISN’T. (I’m not a fan, but she doesn’t have to stoop to this.)
On a related note, is it just me or are these (hers, PC’s) too sexified and in-your-face for the red carpet? It’s funny because Indian clothing is usually associated with modesty but I cringe every time a look like this comes up whereas Westerner’s still seem to (for the MOST part) maintain propriety on the red-carpet. Hmmm.

  28. I realize one of two things have happened – I am so attuned to Western sensibilities that a sloppily worn sari is starting to look vulgar to me; or I’m becoming my mother! (And I’m 22!!!)

  29. The manner the saree is being presented is extremely amateurish. It reminds me of how non-Indians draped their sarees back in my high school during international friendship day (but that can be forgiven). Everything is so wrong here – from the blouse to the border. The beauty of a saree is just killed – what a way to represent it in an international event.

Now for the bad, the saree is so-so. You can find far better sarees in India, and many of them are not designer ones. The blouse should have been better. Draping is not good.

  33. She’s a tall woman, maybe that’s why she couldn’t have a long pallu, because most often the saree is cut into a standard yard. The designer should have paid attention to this, if he indeed custom designed this saree for her.

as for the pallu, am afraid dont agree with you on this one… if the saree is pleated well and pinned on the shoulder you will automatically have an even pallu. Thousands of women in India do this on a daily basis (in a matter of minutes), why-o-why can her stylist not get it right? or on second thoughts, they prolly wanted a ‘carefully-careless’ look.

Being safe would be picking a black gown from a big brand name.

And i like the saree too. Just not the way she wore it…dangerously low with a way too short blouse and short pallu.

Whatever her height (which i doubt is that out-of-the-world that our free size saree would’nt accomodate for), i am sure she has enough resources to custom make a saree for her..
