LFW Winter/Festive 2012: Gen Next Designers

The 2012 Winter Festive edition of Lakme Fashion Week kicked off with the Gen Next show that featured seven collections. We loved Sneha Arora and Aniket Satam right off the bat. Asa Kazingmei showcased Tngkhul tribe’s beautiful textiles via structured pieces.

We’ve got to admit, we’re a tad disappointed at the collections presented by the group designers, Aastha Sethi & Siddharth Arora and Mehak Pruthi, Kanika Seth & Ankit Sharma. With so many thinking hats in the picture, their collections didn’t have much to show for.

See all the collections inside.

LFW Winter/Festive 2012: Ritu Beri

Lately, there’s a certain look Ms. Beri favors, always seemingly looking to the Victorian era for bit of an inspiration. And using some sort of head-gear or embellishment for the hair while styling models for the runway presentation. The designer’s stamp hasn’t escaped us.

This presentation saw a generous use of volume, lace and crochet. Rohit Bal’esque long, sweeping jackets and lace/crochet embellished denims (on trend with versions like those of distressed lace Balmains or more affordable Topshop or Vanessa Bruno ones already doing rounds) stood out (for reasons both good and bad). Minus the many accoutrements, there were a few designs we hope to see off-the-runway, like the yellow denims (more subtler of the ones presented) or those high-waisted printed shorts with the very feminine top.

LFW Winter/Festive 2012: Vizyon

Vizyon presented a collection that wasn’t far from its signature theme. Abstract patterns, interlocked layers and cutouts are what they do best and this collection saw more of it. We’re sure to see some of the sheath dresses on folks pretty soon.

LFW Winter/Festive 2012: Pallavi Jaikishan

Pistachio greens, blush pinks, dusty corals. Ms. Jaikishan has a color palette that she favors, of that we are certain. Cue in some exquisite karigari with floral patterns, and there’s her signature design. A sure favorite with brides!

We however have bit of a problem with the fact that we haven’t seen this aesthetic evolve. Exhibit A. Signature doesn’t have to mean stagnation, right?

LFW Winter/Festive 2012: Jatin Varma

Going with the winter theme, Jatin Varma presented a couture collection themed “Dark Angels” that consisted of dresses and gowns interlined with fringe, studs and felt appliques in graphical patterns. One did feel that there were one too many elements used making the designs feel tad busy in addition to all the patterns.
