WLIFW Spring 2013: Anupamaa

Though DeBo is a word that gets brandished about a tad too frequently (admittedly by me), it does fit Anupama Dayal’s latest collection rather well. Easy and laid-back, the flower-child meets a strong Indian aesthetic is something the designer does well.

WLIFW Spring 2013: Anaikka

Kanika Saluja stuck to her forte of embellishment heavy evening-wear. Though she did experiment with softer pieces, the ones with her signature style were the ones to stand out more.

WLIFW Spring 2013: Rajesh Pratap Singh

Rajesh Pratap Singh’s genius is undisputed. That said, this collection was confusing. I love the sharply tailored, non-fussy, strong aesthetic the designer stands for. But then, the slinky metallic dress in that dreadful lurex-like fabric (Row Three, Extreme Left) came down the runway. You could’ve knocked me down with a feather. The experimentation with this collection has me think the designer is in a state of transition. Though this state of flux didn’t always translate successfully.

The designer played some more with ‘honeycombs’ that we first saw in his Autumn/Winter 2011 collection. And this time, the mood was a lot more darker. Where before the shimmer was a lot more muted in his previous collections, ’twas more aggressive this time around. Some of it worked, some didn’t.

Lest you think it was all one colossal disappointment, it wasn’t. The dresses with metallic spines at the back were brilliant. Loved the black leather honeycomb dress (Row Two, second from left) and the off-white/cream one (Row Three, second from right). The spiked/studded stockings really added to the looks.

Like I mentioned earlier… Confusing.

P.S: I wish this show was better lit. For those of us who pour over digital images (which often is the only way we can go through a collection), the lack of detail is disconcerting. Am sure it never really is the same as actually seeing something up close, but wish there’d be HD images available to us mere mortals.

P.P.S: Speaking of ‘honeycombs’, have you seen Alexander McQueen Spring 2013?

WLIFW Spring 2013: Manish Malhotra

Why fix what ain’t broken? Manish Malhotra knows exactly who his customer is and what works. And towards that end, he delivers every single time.

Aside from his usual color palette of ivory, pink and coral, olive was used in abundance. It’s not a color we see too much of on the runway and made for a change. Loved it especially against the deep-purple/navy (Row Three, Centre). It was business as usual with the silhouettes, though there were some new ones snuck in now and then (Row One, Centre).

The star really was the exquisite chikan work. Love. And, in lust with that navy and red chikan lehenga (Row Three, Extreme Left).

WLIFW Spring 2013: Am:Pm

Am not sure what I want more, to see some of these looks worn off the runway or have them magically make their way in to my closet. Ankur & Priyanka Modi’s collection definitely stood out! Loved the graphic color palette and the use of print. Drawing inspiration from Mesoamérica, the use of iconography sure was well done.
