Bipasha attended an event in Kolkata a while back wearing a blue Raw Mango sari with diamond jewellery and her hair in a bun. She looked lovely!

  1. Why is this a Raw Mango? This is a traditional fabric and design. It’s annoying when brands claim traditional weaves as theirs. Unless they have a design claim (which, in this case, they most definitely don’t), it should be called a sourced by Raw Mango saree.

    • It’s complicated but as a designer you can own it if the motif design pattern is the label’s original design. What happens is sometimes weavers reselk using that original motif…

      • thanks for the response, Payal. your page does a huge job in educating its followers on how the industry works. it’s not always fair and yes, it may seem like someone’s just attaching a length of store-bought embroidery on 6 yards of store-bought fabric and calling it a designer saree. But the more authentic designers, I guess, put higher store by their brands and work to develop counts, shades, embroideries, motifs, weaves before they stick their labels on the product.
am not an industry insider, so happy to be corrected if my assumption is wrong 🙂

        • You would be right. The ones who care about textiles do put in effort into actually creating a unique motif weave and care about the quality of their silk products. Some just source directly from weavers at a lower cost and put a bit of embellishment and upcharge.
