In Manish Malhotra
Alia attended promotions of her upcoming movie wearing Manish Malhotra saris. While the pink sari was the one I loved more, I wish the blouse didn’t have the half/half design on the cup. At first glance, the green makes it feel like the blouse was sheer.
She did look sweet in both.

Basically she could’ve bought this from any stall in bazaar. What’s designer about this? Although she looks lovely, it’s bizarre how little creativity is required on designers’ end these days to slap their label on something and call it designer.
Oh! But who will buy such a “creation” otherwise?
I wish someone would tell Alia that she would look as pretty, as hot as she is looking now even with both the girls covered!!! Also MM clothes were, are and will always be very ordinary.
Can’t say such regressive things
Because you are taking women back by 50 years…..
Hope this was a sarcastic comment. Showing boobs is not modern.
No, what modernity is is not telling people what they should or shouldn’t do with their bodies, it’s respecting each individual’s autonomy. So yeah, some people here have some growing nad progressing to do.
Besides, “the girls” — we can call them breasts, it’s not a bad word — are literally covered by fabric. The lack of logic here blows my mind.
Totally agree. This is a kind of sartorial police at work, signalling modernity by using words like “girls” but actually deeply regressive and needing the saree to be a chastity garment
Knowing your past comments, this is clearly sarcasm. Hope you’re aware of Poe’s law!
why only Alia, please tell every celebrity it is not a sin to not abuse nivi draping
I would usually agree with covering both girls. But here her blouse is kind of like a top which is giving a pop of colour, so its looking fine to me. In fact had she covered it, it would just look like an all pink saree.
Can we stop calling breasts girls?? Even that is ridiculous
So beautiful in both, love both sarees.
I think she looks really pretty in both, she has the new mom glow!
Whatever is a new mom glow?! I look like I live in a dumpster! Lol
Love the chiffon, on the fence about the pin and green.
Both looks would have been 100X nicer if the drape was nice vs the forced show of one of the girls like the pallu is deliberately pulled down, def doesn’t look natural. It absolutely cheapens an otherwise a potentially great sighting!
Exactly… The drape was very off putting even in Chennai express, as worn by Deepika. Wonder y take away elegance of a saree.
She looks lovely in both, me thinks. Those sarees are simple but sweet to look at.
If the promos has such saree looks, I’m looking forward to it.
She’s playing it safe! Too Safe!
The Pink is a terribly glaring and blinding color especially when its all over pink Saree.
Didnt like the saree 1 bit.
So many beautiful weaves but suck tacky sarees by MM. Time to take a tour of the weavers around MM.Get inspired better
Bad drape. Doesn’t look natural or organic. Forced skin show.
The chiffon color palate is ghastly in my opinion and washes her out. Somehow the color scheme reminds of dissection and tissues – the color scheme of human anatomy books.
The pink is just average. As a saree lover, I would never buy either or wear them. Too blah
I am not drawn to either saree, personally. But I am fascinated by the kind of conservative commenters on this site. Put a woman in a saree, and their eyes go immediately to the bosom, the check if the drape is decorous enough. Put the same woman in a formfitting dress with no dupatta/stole, and they are silent. Oh, protectors of the nivi-saree drape – using hip words like “one of the girls” doesn’t make you openminded. Sarees evolve. Go see a film made in the 1950s, you’ll often see drapes that are not as modest as you’d like.
It’s just that a lot of us are so used the saree being worn a certain way. In this case it’s the pallu, had she worn the saree much higher or anything that seemed off from the regular drape we would not have liked it so much. We can’t compare a saree draped with the pallu this way with any other dress with similar upper portion and claim if it works for the dress it should work here as well. It’s not the question of what is being exposed. Most wear short clothes but you wear a saree way above our feet, then people won’t call out what’s wrong in showing our lower portion of our legs but just stick to complain about the drape?
But this is about fashion, and fashion is about revisiting old looks and ideas and recasting them in new ways. Why should the saree drape look exactly the same as it used to, or how it makes us feel comfy? There are some 100 ways of wearing the saree and not all are traditional, some were “invented” fairly recently. So what if one day the saree stops at mid shin or even at the knee? We got used to women wearing pants, there was a time when that raised eyebrows, so why should we fossilize the look of a saree?
All it requires is googling an old actress and you will find that the “one boob show” (what a cringey term) was very much there in the past.
She is getting Kareena ki adaayein.
Bring back the plain sarees and sleeveless blouses. Enough of the embroidery. Enough of the sequins. Enough of the linen, crushed sarees. Enough of the artsy sarees.
Alia looks great in both and I much prefer her in the light blue saree.
Enough of the traditional weaves, or can they survive? By all means though let’s all dress up in plain sarees and ummm…sleeveless blouses?!?!
Good idea.
The sarees and styling dont add much to the look.
Saree posts almost always have very heavy comment section, this is right that is not I am progressive you are not. However if you see Posts where the Saree is draped exposing one side / one breast the intent is to show case the blouse design. These are Saree’s that are not heavy on weave , embroidery or any such ornamentation the interest comes mostly from the design of the blouse . I think both wearer and designer are trying to show the blouse rather than Expose or reinvent the saree . At least that is what I always think .
