In Manish Malhotra

Aishwarya walked the red carpet at Cannes on Wednesday afternoon wearing an ivory sari from Manish Malhotra and jewellery also by the designer. While it was nice to see Ms. Rai wear a sari to the red carpet, the material of the sari itself looked so un-luxurious that it was hard to like it.

    • saw a video, and it affirms my initial response. the outfit — i won’t grace it by calling it a saree — is like a giant pillowcase.

  1. Yes! Yes! Yes! Our collective prayers over multiple years have finally been answered and how! If someone in her inner circle is reading this, please relay my tweaked version of the famous JLo dialogue from The Wedding Planner to her. “Aish, you are exquisite. You’re timeless. And you have the love of a billion people. People who, while you were away wearing gowns that looked like abstract art installations gone rogue, still said, ‘We can’t believe she’s ours. We can’t believe she’s the same woman lighting up the red carpet tonight like old Hollywood reborn.’ And that tells me this comeback of yours? It’s not just a moment. It’s a legacy.”

  2. Now i can see why the french media absolutely loves her.
    Her presence is enough.
And she has hit it out of the park with this.

    • But she just did. She has no grace in her walk because there are no pleats. And what is that folded concoction of a thing on her arm? What happened to women just letting the fabric of the pallu be left to simply drape???

  3. Love it ..was so dreading a ugly gown. Also the sindoor is a great way to make a statement and give ode. If she had skipped the cape it would still been awesome but she is conscious of her arms and I can totally relate to that

  4. The gold work embellishments in Indian clothes are routinely awful instantly lowering a look.

Also wonder when the GHD will finally fade away. Set hair free!

Ms Rai looks good in sarees. And yet we never see her in a good, traditional one worn normally.

  5. Absolutely loved seeing her in a sari. The blouse design is beautifully intricate on the cuffs, the palla motifs look graceful. I liked the cascading necklaces too. That said, a few elements didn’t quite work. The dupatta over her right shoulder felt a bit off, and the two-layered diamond necklace with the ruby choker seemed a bit too much.

Prima facie, the sindoor seems to be more than just a traditional touch…Feels like a tribute to those who lost their lives in the Pahalgam terrorist attack, and also an ode to Operation Sindoor on international waters.

  6. When you give so many bad looks something even remotely ok, now looks enchanting. I think this is god awful. looks like a white bedspread…how this is called couture beats me. There are a 1001 one handloom variations of white/gold that she would have fared better with than this awful saree. Coming to the dupatta…not sure what purpose it served but its more fabric for Aish to hide under. She looks so much skinnier just for being in a saree, I wish she had embraced her figure and flaunted that saree without hiding under a parachute of clothing. then the hair. Lord, why? why is she bent on hiding her gorgeous face? a neat bun would have elevated this look a 1000X. Lastly the jewelry. Again, who told them more is better. Is this a new trend, stack on more than your neck can fit? 1-2 statement pieces would have looked so amazing… overall though, she did a lot better than yesteryears so i guess this is a win for ARB.

  7. The jewelery is an eyesore . The sindoor is is so gimmicky. Hair sucks as usual. Just glad she is not in some monstrous gown.

Saree is cheap looking. A raw mango version of this with normal jewelry would have looked way better

    • This reminds me of the comments on her Cannes pics years ago: when the wind blew her hair, people complained that it made funny shapes in the pics. At another point someone complained that they could see the lining of her saree pallu.
If nothign else works “something is off, I can’t put my finger on it”

      haha

  8. Underwhelming to say the least . If she was going to wear a saree and that too a white one , there were much better choices . I’m sure Raw Mango had better ones than this MM with cheap looking gold work . Somehow the Falguni and Shane Peacock gown from last year seems better now 🙁
And the hair , no comments at all . Of all people ,I wish someone with Aish’s reach would flaunt body positivity .

  9. how does this woman consistently serve bad looks even with bollywood veteran ‘designers’ who ought to know better? wtf is this saree? just because she didn’t turn up in hideous tinsel, is the lowest bar! but props for supporting the country with the sindoor!

  10. Wish we could have seen a pared down version of this look. A tightly draped sari, one ruby necklace, no cape, a loose bun…no need to over embellish a beautiful woman!

  11. of all the gorgeous saris she could have worn, she goes with this? A shower curtain with some cheap rick rack hot-glued on the border? At this point, she has to be trolling because aint no way she thought this looks good

  12. Like the concept of it but again all these big Indian designers are a disaster on International stage for our big stars year after year.. TT for Jhanvi, Sabya for SRK and MM for her…..no originality or class. Agree with Payal 100% fabric looks crass.

  13. This person who people call Aishwarya Rai has managed to make even a saree look dull and insipid! She was never ever consistent with her style but this is beyond redemption. The hair, the outfit, the jewels, the cheeks that get more inflated with each outing, the stilted smile and pretense of grace; it has all become irremediable. This is no longer her fault, this is the fault of those of us who still expect her to make a comeback.

    • I agree with you, Aishwarya is a woman full of grace and dignity but she has a terrible sense of what looks good on her or she just does not care how she looks. Her appearances at Cannes have just gotten worse.

  14. The love for this look is ‘ Andho mein kanna raja ‘ as the saying goes . she dresses terribly throughout the year so now people are gushing over this . Her face is gorgeous no doubt but she does disservice to it by drowning in yards of cheap white fabrics , the hair extensions and loading with all that jewellery.

  16. Per designer it’s a Kadwa Banarasi saree and the drape looks like organza to me. Maybe it’s not photographed very well but doesn’t look unluxurious to me. Welcome respite from all the previous choices!

    • not needed. we dont need film actors and performers/entertainers to go around making a statement about it. thats what i call being shallow and fake…when did she wear a sindoor earlier ? the hypocrisy can stay with her and everyone like her in their homes. we dont want them brandishing this outside

  18. i saw the videos- the saree seems to be short in width and length- her heels were very visible – and no pleats – very very odd. In close ups i can see a stark white benarasi – probably very thin silk, hence the drape is so poor. Some random ‘zardosi’ work- and badly matched jewellery. makes no sense. Very disjointed. I think this looks does have a lot to do with geopolitical scenario – but is just not translating in any ways. This is like Paro – with midlife crisis.

  19. Was this a tribute to Indian armed forces I wonder – with the very obvious Sindhoor! 😛 I agree that the material could have been better….if you want to wear a saree….do it like Ms Sharmila Tagore – elegant, timeless and classic…this look is just meh but kudos to displaying the Sindhoor 🙂

  20. How can designers from India, with all the resources of the best fabrics and craftsmanship of the world put this forward on a global stage???? Beyond redemption. Big fail Manish Malhotra for using this awful quality of silk fabric, creating an even tackier train, ill-designed rings on her fingers and draping her in a sari without pleats!!!!!!!

Seriously, why is no one talking about the lack of pleats and the ill-draped saree???

  21. Babes, only Rekha does Rekha! And there can be no Rekha Lite! That extra dupatta lets you hide and so does the Adams family hair. But why hide. Seriously, why hide. The fashion knows the saree — thats no statement. This is just lazy.

  22. This is such a boring look! The saree fabric and the gold border stitched on it gives such a hastily sewn vibe. The jewellery – less said the better. The sindoor looks gimmicky.

This looks so last minute and lazy.

If saree is what she was going for, we have such amazing choices of weaves and textures to choose from… And, we get this!

  27. M I the only one here, who thinks that she looks awful!! Nothing works- the badly draped-no pleats saree, chipku flat ironed hair, the gimmicky sindoor, the omnipresent red lipstick. Nothing!!! Just because she wore a saree n saare khoon maaf!!!

  28. Looks like one of those fraud godwomen who run a religious racket.
Seriously though, looks scary—that black hair framing a chalky white face with bright red lipstick. And those flowing garments embellished by a profusion of ugly jewellery. Guillermo Del Toro needs to cast her as a creature in one of his next outings.

  29. No no no Ash! This whole look did a lot of dis-service to this gorgeous, stunning, beautiful woman. Sure, wear a saree but this was too ordinary for an event where the whole world is watching her. Where is the bold Ash who took risks with her outfits, styling, lavender lipstick….please bring her back. We need this bold and beautiful person back center-stage and this frankly feels opposite of that.

  30. all she had to do was pick something from her PS1/2 wardrobe and she would be truly an Aishwariya –
but i think she wore white – for the widowed, blood tear shaped rubies- for tragedy, and the sindoor for the revenge ! Full script in one outing.

    -Side note- Loved those rubies!

  32. This look has aged her by a decade or more . And this is worse than the Neeta lulla ugly yellow saree she wore 22 years ago to Cannes . It’s a shame that a big designer like MM created this cheap , uninspiring, run of the mill look for her ….just putting on gazillion rubies doesn’t salvage this terrible saree or styling
