Sari Style

Wearing a cotton sari, Vidya unveiled the latest issue of a magazine. Braided hair and jewelry by Amrapali completed her look.

We love the color on her and that’s just about it. Not feeling the drape. At. All. Am guessing that flat pleat is to perhaps minimize the bulk and puffiness of a starched cotton sari but it really isn’t working. Maybe if the pallu was worn down, it wouldn’t have been so bad…

  1. A predictable affair again! – Vidya Balan has said in the acting industry, the only thing that works is conviction – i guess she has that motto in her dressing as well, even if her conviction in dressing maybe lost on many of us! A case of inner beauty trimuphing outer beauty – she is an actress worth watching in movies anyways.

  2. Looks like a disgrace to the apparel called “sari” itself! I cannot believe that a woman who wears a sari to almost every single event doesnt know how to drape such a simple sari well. Sigh!

  3. I long for the day where she wears a fabric that doesn’t look like it weighs 50 lbs. I feel exhausted and hot just looking at her. That said, I like the actual sari, and blouse.

  4. i dont like to make comparisons and believe each person has their own unique way of presenting themselves but this lady just doesn’t seem to want to learn…its a beautiful saree, a nice blouse on a beautiful person but how hard is it to drape the freakin thing properly? i mean it cant be rocket science particularly when you appear in one 99% of the time…please get your act together Vidya, by draping it so poorly you are doing the exact opposite of what you intend to do…make people hate the garment when you’re intention is to keep it mainstream…and if you dont know what most of us are talking about just look at Konkona’s pink cotton saree from some even yesterday, looked ever so graceful!

  5. I like the colour clashing of the sari and blouse. I can’t wait to see what she wears for Ganchakar promotions and premiere. I wonder if the outfits will match the character.

  6. I feel sorry for Vidya Balan. So many choices out there and she had to pick this for a cover launch. It’s a beautiful Gadwal cotton saree and my south Indian grandmother has a bunch of them and she wears them much more tastefully.

On Vidya, the blouse, the drape, the bulky saree, the earrings, the bangle/bracelet, the side braid…nothing works. Heavy Gadwal cottons are not meant for young people and i’ve yet to see someone young pull it off. Why can’t she pick a light Chanderi or raw silk? Why is she wearing long blouses in 2013? She needs an intervention.

  7. I beg to differ; I love the sari and though I would have preferred a different hairdo and black blouse with it, she still looks nice. I don’t get the hullabaloo over the pleats. That is how they’re supposed to look.

    • I agree, I think we are too harsh on Vidya, who manages to stand out in simpler saris amongst the sea of Manish Malhotra nets and borders.

Personally I would have changed the hair but I like how the pleats are giving her some shape, as well as giving the sari a narrower silhouette. I would have made the sleeves smaller too..

  8. Like you, I like the colour but thats about it. I’m a Vidya fan but the tedium has set it and Ms Balan, like a certain Ms Arora Khan,(for different sensibilities entirely) is beginning to look like a caricature of herself.

  9. i wear a lot of heavy gadwal cottons (and i am Vidya’s age and shape) and my drape is 100% better than this. i dont know how she left the house with the pleat so off centre.

  10. Sari is a historic as well as traditional attire of India it has so much of pride in it and v adore women wearing it on high Brow events draping a sari is an art and what i see here is a disaster poorly draped, awfully styled not working sorry

  11. This look is too ‘village belle’ for me…and even at that, it fails. The side braid is badly made and is just too ‘Munni’-like…someone please tell her that by ‘changing it up’, this is not what we mean o_O

  12. Okay so I love vidya as an actress, love all her work but does she not get paid or something? Somebody please buy this woman a new sari (or a new stylist or something!!!)

And that hair, I know she’s going for a side braid but it looks more like a school girl two braid with one just tucked behind or something… 🙁

  13. Neither the saree nor the blouse is something fresh, keep on seeing these things on road and online many times. And it was a bad hair day too. Vidya has lost a lot of weight it seems may be planning to go Mommy way!!!

  14. That side braid looks so funny on her and makes her look like like a drag. Well, if that’s the intent then it works. 😛 Seriously how come no mention of an intervention for her bad drape(99%), ever so poor hair dos and basically the same ol’ bad stuff?
