In Satya Paul

Ms. Balan is currently in the States promoting the upcoming IIFA Awards in various cities. Her first stop was a press meet in NY to which she wore a Satya Paul printed sari with an orange long jacket blouse with earrings from the Manish Arora for Amrapali collection.

The checkered print in itself was so strong that a pop of color would’ve sufficed. What could’ve been interesting, with that jacket just looked overwhelming. With a softer hair do and a shorter blouse, this look might have worked but as it stands, it wasn’t working one bit.

  1. She makes it “more than” work. Agreed she hasn’t looked this good in a while! The color pops as a contrast to the saree and she looks sophisticatedly sexy. Vote up from my side. New saree+blouse inspiration!

  2. wow! i don’t think she’s looked better in an “experimental” saree look ever! the bold colours and the print are a great match — if one had been muted, the other would’ve dominated the look — and the hair balances it all perfectly. the long lines of the jacket actually slim her down and the saree too seems to drape well, instead of adding bulk to the figure like Kanjeevarams. Good idea to keep the jewellery subtle. PLUS she looks confident. This is a winner in my book.

  3. I think she looks good!
And thats not a blouse its a Jacket! ts still cold in ths US. My mom wears her pullo like that and I think it makes one look slimmer this ways.

    • I agree. I think she looks fab. Loved the bold color, saree drape and don’t mind the longish jacket at all….
Don’t mind the hair. Why do we rave about sonam’s one sided high-up bun and then diss hers?
      Go figure…

  5. Ha ha ha. It all looks so randomly put together plus she is a lady who cannot pull off quirky. This whole thing looks like a big joke.

  6. Are you kidding me! I am not the biggest fan of her style but this is spot on for the location and the weather, NYC winter! Very refreshing indeed!

  7. I am loving her! This is quite chic for cold weather. I am wondering about the shoes though. Since its cold, I think booties instead of sports shoes (to me those are looking like running shoes) would’ve been cooler/ warmer/chic

  8. Quirky?! Experimental?! More like mental! NY cold or otherwise, no denying that she lets her stylist do the thinking. I mean she looks like those Bangkok traditional dancer portraits. Who does that hair with that coat and sari? I prefer her boring yet pretty days than whatever she is trying these days.

  9. Not a fan of the hair (though an up do was the right choice with the jacket) or shoes (thankfully they are covered)
But apart from they this is fabulous!
I love that sari and then fun sophistication of the jacket
This is one of her coolest looks to date
I know fashion is subjective but I truly am surprised by the “doesn’t work one bit”
While not perfect to me this works on many levels

  10. I can see why some think she looks good – it’s eclectic and looks put together. I feel like this all ages her far too much though. It’s probably the hair.

  11. She looks awesome. If she dressed in traditional sari styles like Cannes she would have been critiqued and called too costumey… This is chic, elegant and modern. If it was Sonam you guys will be raving about this look!

  12. I don’t hate it or love it…its kinda of weird, she is not edgy enough to carry this off but neither does it look awful!

  13. I completely disagree with you. She took a risk and she looks amazing. I am shocked she has actual style in her. I had already written her off completely in the fashion sense (though she is a fantastic actress) but I gotta give her props for this look!!

  14. You know what – I like it . It is something different and flattering, though the orange jacket does look random. But the overall picture looks good.

  15. I think she’s looking really nice. refreshingly different inspite of the same old sari. would love to see her experimenting such as mini does with her saris

  16. On the contrary, I am loving the styling and everything…so polished and chic…given the fact that she is short, yet the blouse is not looking overwhelming on her…nice look, i would say.

  17. I dont understand why some of you guys are correcting P&P. It is their blog and it is totally up to them what to write about anyone.
If you are so badly Vidya-friendly then find another blog to visit or create your own.
So much pity talking for Vidya!? My god!

  18. Ooh Laa Laa.. She looks amazing! Only she could pull this off! The vivacious colour of the jacket is added a color to her personality.

  19. Satya Paul meets Vidya AND there is a shouty orange long jacket should be so so wrong. And yet it is so very right. Props all around.

  20. If she had worn a shorter blouse and had her hair down, people would have said “Wow she’s boring and needs to change things up”. Here’s her taking a plunge from the ordinary and I salute her for that – SHE LOOKS STUNNING. Bright colors like these work wonders on her. I love how she went with a subtle lip color. All together, this outfit is a thumbs up. Sorry but highheelconfidential got it wrong this time.

  21. She does look better than she usually does, but this style ages her. I have B&W photos of my mom, in the 60s and 70s, with saris and sweaters like these.

  22. I agree with other comments. She hasn’t looked this chic ever before. Love the hair and makeup and the sari with jacket works for her. Can’t fault this look one bit.

  23. I think she looks great, hair and all! The long blouse is the only thing I would change, but I can even let that pass considering how nice she looks.

  24. I think she looks nice…Given the cold. Plus this is the one of best she has looked considering her other experiments ! Lets give her some credit for trying!

  25. Absolutely gorgeous. I have never been a fan of her style, but this look coming from her is spot on.
P and P, you need to give credit when it is due.

Had the poor lady worn her hair down, you would have recommended an updo, subtle hair do and you would have recommended a severe one. Breather, breather, give the world some breather..

  26. Completely disagree with you guys this time! She looks stunning. As is the outfit looks fabulous! Way to go Vidya! Finally venturing in different directions! Loves it!

  27. I’m confused by this look. I love looking at this, the colors and print are fab, but the more I look , the more I get a Disney character/South Asian head of state vibe. Which may not be a bad thing.

  28. I’m a regular visitor on this page. And I have thought and said vidya balan has made sartorial choices often. But this was a thumbs up all the way for me. Having said that i feel tht ur criticism is very biased. U appear to like and forgive some choices on some celebs while terribly criticizing the same on others. That’s one put off for me. Also when u say not quite or bad I wud like to know wht u think works. Gives us an insight into ur fashion sense. Like wht u said bat amisha at the lfw. I thought the she looked good ( which is almost rare/never). White palazzos wud have looked like trying too hard. And cud easily end up on the other side of the red carpet.

  29. I love how she looks, it suits her,she looks good and confident and the updo while severe goes totally well with this look and esp Vidya’s face, it kind of highlights her features.
