Vidya was back on the red carpet at Cannes 2013 for the screening of Inside Llewyn Davis wearing another Sabyasachi sari with a potli and jewelry by Amrapali. The hair, instead of being a severe do, was a tad relaxed.

  1. LOVE! the earrings and the less-severe blouse make a huge difference. She’s obviously sticking to an earty colour palette and a style for Cannes, so it’s futile to expect anything radical, but individually each of these appearances is stellar. (ok, maybe not the dupatta-over-head one)

  2. This is by faaar the my favorite appearance of her at Cannes. The hair is much more flattering this way & she’s glowing.

I hated her previous ghoonghat look & the severe hair.

  3. What a gorgeous face!

Imagine if she decided to wear the heck out of a carolina herrera or a dior on the last day! Ha! That’ll get chins wagging.

  6. The woman has such stunning features that even a lil but effort on her part looks gorgeous.
The sari again is a lil matronly but who can look beyond the amped up glow on her face?

  7. this is her best appearance at Cannes. i think sabyasachi is controlling what vidya wears rather than her calling the shots. i’ve seen him in an ndtv good times tv show on which he appears often and he comes across as really manipulative and controlling in a passive aggressive way.

    • all bongs are !! passive aggressive :-).. yes i agree one of my friend was on that show and was told that he literally pushed her to wear what he selected for her.

  8. YES! I’m glad atleast someone is attending Cannes in all Indian attire. That too not in ultra modern way, but very traditional!

  9. the award for the most repititive red carpet regular officially goes to vidya.

For sticking to the same for yearssss and counting.

you could place all her sabyasachi sarees end on end, and they would probably stretch from mumbai to cannes.

i even feel like she is carrying sabya’s business cards in that clutch she’s carrying. “Hi, my name is Vidya Balan, an actress from India, and I am the official ambassador of this label, here’s the card.”

  11. LIKE! I know it’s nothing to write home about and I don’t understand the fascination with full sleeves (though it’s probably weather appropriate or so I’m told) but …. that face! Gorgeous. She looks so much younger with the softer do. It’s simple and classic. More of the above, please!

    • The full sleeves are the only part of the ensemble that lend a dignity and distinction to a look which otherwise would have been just one of her everyday “done to death” looks back home in India…

  13. This is my fav look of hers so far at Cannes. How much difference an open neck and less severe hair can make. Love it…. She looks beautiful. The Indian ladies are doing us proud.

  14. Vidya is a pleasant, but matronly looking woman. She looks OK, but I don’t understand what the fuss is about. I don’t get how someone could find her “jaw-droppingly” beautiful, but she’s easy on the eye, if a little irritating and self-conscious with those sarees. For a confident saree wearer, look no further than Nandita Das, who’s earthy, lovely *and* confident!

    • I don’t usually comment, but this irritated me so much, I had to respond. Matronly? Please! There are plenty of people in this world who do not think that a woman needs to be an anorexic twenty-something with her breasts/ legs/ midriff constantly on display in order to be considered attractive. I find this woman incredibly charming, beautiful and alluring , whereas I am left cold by women like Priyanka and Katrina because I find them so artificial, affected and vapid. To each, his/ her own.

I’ve lived in Britain all my life, and as much as women such as Cheryl Cole and Kate Moss are appreciated here, there is also room for the Emma Thompsons, the Kate Winslets and even the Helen Mirrens. It’s incredibly sad that in India a woman has to constantly apologize for not being a size zero, for not looking ‘Western’, and for being over the age of 30.

And what exactly do you mean by confident? How does wearing Western/ revealing clothes translate to confident while wearing saris makes one self-conscious? To my mind the career choices Vidya has made reveal far more confidence, self-assurance and bravery than those of any of her collegues whose entire ‘career’ consists of toning and then revealing their bodies.

      • And a ‘Hear Hear’ from me too!

I think this is my favourite Vidya appearance at Cannes so far – I like the hair and the blouse is more flattering than the high-necked blouses she’s been wearing.

      • Seriously !!! I have seen people pulling down Vidya all the time for her sartorial choices. Her body of work and her performances have been “jaw-droppingly” beautiful if someone ever cared to see. She is consistently bagging all the “Best Actress” awards since last 3 years and is in the same jury as Spielberg, and that is an achievement in itself. Agree this is a fashion site, but there is no need to be unnecessarily harsh on someone.

      • So true. I would rather like and respect vidya for who she is rather than like a Katrina , priyanka for being one of the typical run of the mill types.

      • Well said Armaan. Like you said, to each his/her own. So while there may be those who will find Vidya matronly, there are also others who think she looks anything but!

I think she looks beautiful here, the smile, make up, accessories and that beautiful sari n blouse, all came together really well. I do find her style repetitive and predictable, but not once do I recall ever finding her tacky or vulgar, which is more than I can say about some of her peers.

        • What Armaan and the rest said. She’s gorgeous. She’s a great actress. She dresses to suit herself, not you, and she looks fabulous. Period.

  15. The things that a bit of colour can do to one’s face…the entire look sartorially is not that different from her other looks…the only way this has been elevated a million light years ahead is the “normal” make-up,it feels as though in her last few appearances somebody had been deliberately sabotaging the make-up artist’s colour scheme with tons of grey…

  16. this is my favorite look from her so far (with the white sari from the first day coming a close second)
her hair and makeup makes all the difference as does a lower neck on the blouse. She looks younger, fresher and happier.

    Way to represent!

  20. Omg Vidya has a neck! And (gasp) collarbones?! One wouldn’t guess it after the last appearances. No gimmicks required, it shows, for her to look so beautiful.
