Sari Style- Part Deux

Channeling her inner Rekha was a luminous Ms. Balan at the Star Screen awards albeit in a far more toned down manner.

The color was fabulous on her and Vidya looked great. Yes, it was fabulous enough to have made us forget and forgive the rather bland/repetitive appearance from the calendar launch.

    • I quite agree with you Kaya. She does look very beautiful in both the sarees. In fact I think she was the BEST Dressed lady at the Screen Awards. However, she has a strange habit of repeating the styles and silhouettes and that becomes quite boring. for example when it’s churidaar, it’s always churidaar and when it’s saree it’s always saree…c’mon Vidya, change it up a bit.

I LOVED the green and red combination. oh what a gorgeous saree and blouse!!

    • Had a great laugh – “inner Rekha” .. please I think one with her heavy Kanjeevarams and the real heavy jewellery that she wears with it is enough… dont need another one…
But for Vidya – the “look” looked different .

  1. I actually feel that she looks better in the white one but the sari is quite voluminous and a bit matronly. However, it is Vidya, so she can be excused for (read expected to) dressing 20 years older. For the green Kanjeevaram, I have only one thing to say- You ain’t Rekha girl !!

    • The only thing that I think she could have added to the white sari to make the whole look pop is some nice long single strand necklace with a pretty centerpiece. Something to match the earrings probably soft gold with a kundan centerpiece.

  2. Without seeing it any closer, that sari she wore to the calendar lookssuper classy, from the fine stripes on the body to the self design on the tissue pallu, and the single sie border. Not everything has to be blingy blingy and honestly, this is how a lot of upper middle – upper class women in India dress at functions, which is thankful considering that a lot of celebs end up choosing ultra tacky sarees. Sure, at first glance the colour in the second apprearance pops, but there is no way that that saree is more fab or of better quality than the first one.

    • agree completely! i like how she is comfortable in her own way and has her own way of styling herself….i find her sarees extremely sophisticated !! and Vidya looks elegant too !! not everyone “needs” to wear “dresses” even if iit does not suit your body type just because you are a celebrity !! i think vidya is just fine !

  3. Omg. Both saris are hideous. The one she wore at the Star Screen awards is so OTT. The colours look way too bright and there’s no real style to it. Looks like she wrapped a oversized foil sweet wrapper around herself. The only good thing about her, is her hair and smile.

    • exactly my sentiments. the first saree is still simple and hence forgivable but the second one is just plain tacky i dont think its a kanjeevaram saree i just hate how the pallu looks in the second saree and the colours are just plain tacky so is the fabric. that saree is NOT a kanjeevaram saree its a saree pretending to be a kanjeevaram saree but its not. vidya should take lessons from sridevi i mean that lady is in her 40’s and yet she manages to knock everyone’s socks off even in gowns and in sarees there is nobody to beat her.

  4. Compared to that kaamvali style she pulled last time, this is a lot better. But the sari looks cheap. Must be from one of the stores in Pondy Bazaar selling faux silk(okay, that was my moms comment, lol).

    • LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO….. MWAHAHAHAHAHA ….. LOL …. HAHAHAHAHA ….. OMG ! are you my cosmic twin . my sentiments exactly you took the words out of my mouth. you are so god damn funny. my mom wears better sarees even when she wears cotton sarees and i can tell that that is not a kanjeevaram saree its a faux silk saree from pondy bazaar you hit the nail on the head girl. absolutely love the way you think and your sense of humour. you go girl!!!

    • LOL! Truly, almost all the stores now in Madras – big or small – have given quality silk a toss (partly due to demand, to be honest) In that sense, I really miss the days when real silk and real gold were de rigeur in a saree. Sigh.

    • HAHAHA. But around the same pondy bazaar area, if you hop over to the next street they have all the real silk goodness. But then VidyaB doesnt have it in her. Real or faux she ain’t making it work.

  5. uhm, well, Rekha turns out gorgeous even with all the OTT kanchivarams she wears. But this one, naah! I hate this color of green. The border is too shiney giving it a cheap and tacky vibe. But yes, she looks much better and working on something different.

  6. omg..thats wat i thought too….rekha look….
    i dun like it though….
she needs a makeover and needs to change her entire wardrobe…

  7. dear God, what is up with her hair. Rekha can carry this look because she is tall, vidya is lost in the sari (the hem dragging on the floor is not flattering) and the LONG hair.

  8. She could have personalized the second look by doing her hair differently or atleast just leaving it without the extensions. Here it just looks bad. The first pic looks better .Atleast there she is herself and does not come across as trying too hard.Rekha has an extremely glamorous aura while Vidya’s USP is the simplicity in her beauty.Clearly she is still struggling to fit in.

    • I think that she def purposely tried to channel/give off a Rekha (read: timeless Indian beauty) vibe because that’s how she wants to be seen – as an old world beauty/traditionally beautiful etc etc. I agree with what you said though that Vidya’s USP is the simplicity in her beauty which is why the Rekha vibe won’t work because Rekha IS very glam.

  9. All I can see in the second pic are the extensions.Gawk. Vidhya get out of your rut! I almost wish she would start wearing anarkalis again…you now have two looks you’re comfortable in. How about atleast alternating between the two?

  10. I actually loved the sari at the calendar launch, but she does look absolutely luminous in the green sari. At least one of the younger actresses is wearing interesting saris and not convwntional, filmi ones.

  11. I looooove vidya balan. Though her dressing style is bad, and shes on the plumpier side, this lady has the face to carry it off. shes so beautiful ! I like how she looks here…. and yes you are right when you mentioned rekha 😉

  12. PS: Im tired of looking at celebrities in western wear… everyone tries just too hard. too much exposing, too much bling…. i really like how vidya sticks to what she is… We can actually relate to vidya. She never wears anything that does not suit her body type, making it look cheap or vulgar.

  13. I think she looks nice at both events! They arent earth shattering looks but she looks nuice.

On an aside though I am sick of people saying aunty when anybody wears traditional prints and looms with a blouse that covers their arms. Lots of people myself included like coverage on our arms and I am very proud to wear kanchi, pochampally, benaras silk saris. The artisans who perform these crafts are dying a slow death as we refuse to recognize the immense skill and beauty of these handicrafts and run after Italian silk and net! To each their own on what you want to wear but what is wrong with honoring the craftspeople of India by wearing their gorgeous and intricate designs and if we didn’t call everyone who wears these behenjis we would see a lot more people look beautiful in these gorgeous creations.

    • Yeah I agree – people just seem to have an aversion to anything handloom these days, its all bikini blouses and transparent sarees in order to be termed as ‘hot’. Also, I doubt Vidya would be wearing a 3000rs art silk number(to those who are referring to her silk saree looking ‘cheap’) Sometimes silks don’t photograph well, and the light makes it look shiny. I bet that saree looked a whole lot better in real life than what it appears here. I love how Vidya sticks to traditional wear, as she knows it suits her best.

  14. Vidya, pl learn from Kiron Kher… that woman knows how to wear gorgeous , traditional sarees and carry them off well, with grace. Vidya appears overwhelmed in both the sarees. relka wears her sarees, this is the other way around.

  15. She looks horrible in the second saree and looks ok in the first one. What i’ve got a problem with is the hair…why doesn’t she sort it out??!!!
