Haseena And Simone On Verve: (Un)Covered

Comment image 34

The Oct 09 issue was all about the ‘Best Dressed List’ and fittingly Verve put those ladies on it’s cover who made their (Verve’s) cut.

While Haseena got to wear my (most) favorite outfit from Anand Kabra’s Spring 2010 collection, Simone donned a Nachiket Barve Fall 09 coat and Malini Ramani was dressed in her own label. As lovely as all the ladies were on the cover, Kalyani Chawla was an absolute scene stealer in her sari.

To check who made the Best Dressed List, go Here.

  1. While the shoot itself is fantastic, I find this concept of ‘best-dressed list’ a bit amusing. It is such a blatant attempt to emulate the western fashion world, and not really appropriate in country where fashion is still in the early, developmental stages.
This is made obvious from the fact that a lot of so-called ‘best-dressed’ woman do not really know what style is at all. If you look at the posts on this site, women like Katrina Kaif and Feroz Gujral get more negative comments than positive ones, yet they are proclaimed as style icons by these magazines. Also the film industry blindly confers ‘style’ awards on various actresses ( like bipasha basu).
The magazine shoots especially pique me because a lot of times they are the result of a lot of photoshopping and a stylist’s styling (although this particular article looks like the woman had a say in styling themselves) and yet they claim to showcase the woman in question’s style!
A lot of you will probably disagree, but in my opinion, these lists are just plain unnecessary until the fashion scene in India develops a bit more. (cue the several, several comments I’ve seen on this site saying that twinkle khanna/ sonam Kapoor are the only effortlessly stylish women amongst the social set.)

    • Sonam Kapoor? Ha. Any person who can have a articulate conversation on Fashion for more than 40mins will tell you where Sonam Kapoor stands…

      • I wasnt expressing my opinion, I was talking about the general majority of comments on this site. I think Sonam gets it right a lot of times, but its more because she tries very hard than becuase she’s effortlessly chic.

  2. THIS IS SUCH A REFRESHING SELECTION OF TRULY STYLISH WOMEN AS OPPOSED TO THE USUAL BOLLYWOOD BIMBETTE BRIGADE WHO ARE BADLY STYLED AND BEREFT OF CLASS.

  4. Kalyani (perfect), Malini (hot) and Simone (classy) look super, the right side of the photo is much better than the left. Why do most of them on the left look so uncomfortable?

  5. Why do I have an overwhelming urge to feed all these women on the cover, a good meal?

When will they do a best dressed list of women who actually wear Indian design? If you read the accompanying article, the majority of these fashionistas declare that thier favorites are established western designers. I could read the same list in my Women wear daily. What makes them uniquely Indian? Apart from thier mothers and grandmothers basra pearls and the occasional chanderi sari, most of them have but a nodding acquantaince with Indian design (not designers… HA).

    • I agree… most of the celebrities featured on this site are “oh so boring!”. They have nothing unique or trendsetting in them. Every single celebrity belong to the same old wannabe rut (oh, i love and wear only western desingers)
I would love to see some indian designs… something more interesting.

    • You know I couldn’t agree more. One-these lists are so lame as it is because they just don’t make sense. So many women who are not well known or in the limelight dress as good if not much better with less resources at their disposal.

But you figure if they are going to make a list there would be emphasis on Indian design. The western designers rave about the sari and yet the Indian media/industry seems to always run the other way where one or two of the ladies is draped in a sari to cover the base but that’s about it. Simone’s dress is tacky looking-no where close to best dressed in my mind-that sari is the best among all those outfits.

  8. i really don’t like the kabra creation with the giant paisley shoulder pads and horrible skirt. i only like what simone and kalyani are wearing as those outfits look wearable and stylish and not bonkers.

  9. They all look very good. I do not agree that one has to wear Indian Designers to be on the best dressed list-its about who dresses well most of the time. Itsa lovely cover and overall a very nice read. In terms of experimenting with Indian designers-Simone is the most experimental/quirky

  10. You know what? I agree with the list 🙂 These women may not be the most famous, but style they have. While Sonam may be the most fashionable starlett, she has a while before she reaches the calibre of someone like Kalyani.

  11. i think for the cover…. apart from simone and kalyani, nobody looks the best dresed list part. …

Haseena does dess up well on her own but this Anand Kabra outfit just dosent cut it… maybe one of the sarees from the same collection

nandita wears the same thing again and again and again….totally not a best dressed list… cool comfy flowy clothes list for sure

    rita … umm ok…
malani ramani… should try to stop emulating herself when she was 20

u know i would love u see all these women in basic skinny jeans and tops and how they carry tht off.. like for shilpa on vogue…. i think she looked great in casual

anyway im just soooo glad aishwarya rai isnt on the list……

  12. Can someone please tell me the name of the designer of the cream sari with the black border? I am desperately looking for that outfit for my own wedding. I am not familiar with most Indian designers or these girls…but I think Kalyani is the name of the girl wearing it. I would be most grateful for your help.
