In Payal Khandwala

For the screening of her movie at a Film Festival in Mumbai, Tillotama picked a geometric-print Payal Khandwala sari. Wearing her hair up, she finished out the look with some interesting jewelry and a red bindi. While I do have reservations over the sari-drape, given how lovely Ms. Shome looked, am willing to happily look past ’em; she looked nice!

  1. Not to be disrespectful… but, she looks like our maid from back in India.. she wore very similar saree draping with white ill-fitted blouse and super-messy bun hairstyle… her face, figure and lovely smile are making this look passable…

    • heads up to all the people who start their comments with ” not to be sexist, racist, classist, homophobic” etc, you most probably are doing all the above and more in your comment. I actually find her saree drape really fun and quirky and this is a rare Payal Khandwala outfit that I like. Love the bindi, but not the necklace. Tillotma looks really cute and not wearing the cookie cutter look we see among so many others.

        • i agree with Amu, i just feel if they are in this business and buying designer clothes .they can definitely put in a little bit more effort . That look is horrible .A good presentation of how lovely clothes (love the print of saree) can be made to look cheap.

    • People seriously need to stop with these classist comments. So what if she looks like your maid? Is your maid not human as you are? Maybe your maid is a beautiful woman who takes care of herself and dress as best as she can in her situation? Its a disgusting habit among South Asians and it needs to stop. Stop looking down on people who have less money than you. This goes beyond just fashion.

      • The whole point is list on you… When did I ever mention that my maid is a lesser human being… When the styling of a media person with an entourage of designers, makeup artists and hairdressers end up looking like another person(in this case a maid) who has very little means and budget f

        • For her grooming and styling, it doesn’t make sense is what I am getting at… You dont know me, stop judging me… I value and respect all humans irrespective of who they are and how meaty thirr bank account is…

          • If my statement read, “not to be disrespectful, she looks like a runway model”, you wouldn’t be pouncing on me… it is you who consider “maid” to derogatory, I merely made an observation

          • You could have said “she looks like someone I know back home” and it wouldn’t take away anything from it. You knew that saying “maid” may be disrespectful so you added a qualifier. When you know that some comment/remark is classist or sexist or racist just don’t make the comment. Putting the qualifier “not to be disrespectful” does not make the comment more acceptable. And it would have helped you avoid the mini-debate above.
Yes, there’s nothing wrong with being a maid, but who are you kidding? We have a rigid class structure and low dignity of labor in India. Words can reflect your subconscious feelings even when you don’t mean to say anything like that.

    • Agree with Amu. She really does look like the description given above. If people are busted for practising racism and sexism and what not, when they are not intending to actually, in every seemingly honest comment; then that way nobody can open mouth. Her look is indeed “effortless”.. zero effort gone into it !

Amu called a spade a spade and please have a look at the last pic. The blouse looks so badly made. And I shudder to think that these days crop tops also come in such forms; ATROCIOUS !

      • I couldn’t agree more with Apsara and Vysh, love how someone says something that is incredibly classist and then angrily shoots back that she isn’t being classist at all! Because, of course, “looking like a maid” is supposed to be insulting and deregatory.

        I love the look.

  2. I think she looks super duper sweet and nails the bohemian chic look. She looks so unique and owns the whole look, quite lovely!

  3. Agree 100% with Amu. This is a messy bun and not in a good way, paired with the messy sari it takes to look down to another level.
    Beautiful face though.

  4. Agree with Amu. If some one is not doing a boob or a belly or butt display, sadly in TODAY’S India its not considered fashionable 🙁 Or if its not some over priced over seas fashion label for a purse or shoes…. THEN we see comments like “Lusting” “Oh! drooling” “Killing” “Slaying”
    A bunch of slangs…

Its a LOVELY saree, she looks GORGEOUS. Its stylish and edgy and very “artsy”

    • Hahaha, your comment about slangs is so true! I too love this look! Her, Konkona, Sona Mohapatra, Nandita Das – such lovely looks each time!

  5. Agree with others that the drape is awful. She just about gets away with it because she’s petite. On more generous proportions this would look extremely vulgar.

    • So true. Also cant get on board with the classist comments like ‘bai – like, maid – like etc and the backlash when it is called out.
