Sidewalk Art

If London’s got elephants, it’s mannequins for New York. In a first of its kind exhibit, 30 leading designers and two student groups have collaborated to transform custom built Ralph Pucci mannequins into art pieces for Sidewalk Catwalk.

Prabal Gurung paid tribute to late designer Alexander McQueen and created a head-piece of white butterflies (see McQueen’s design here). Naeem Khan went glamorous (much like his gowns) with a metal studded mannequin outfitted with a colorful leotard, beaded necklace and chain headdress.

Parson’s student group included Niyati Karwat and Emily Saunders, who created as an ode to the 1950s Fashion District, a Victorian skirt.Focusing on a sustainable and socially responsible design, all the materials used were natural. The inner lining of the skirt actually has moss which they hope will bloom flowers eventually. How cool is that!

If you are in NYC, be sure to catch the exhibit on Broadway between 35th and 42nd but if you aren’t see all the designers here.

In Naeem Khan

Padma Lakshmi looked radiant at the ‘Sex and the City 2’ premiere wearing a halter-neck Naeem Khan dress with yellow strappy sandals. The long gown from this collection was one of our favorite creations from this season and I would have loved to see that on Padma but considering it is already Spring in New York, it might have been too hot to wear.

Catch everyone else’s look from the red carpet on Red Carpet Fashion Awards Here.

Update: Added more pics. Turns out the dress isn’t a halter neck like I originally thought.

At The Theater

Jewellery designer Ranjana Khan and her husband Naeem Khan attended the American Ballet Theater’s Spring Gala in New York tonight.

I know exactly what you are thinking! WTHeyyy is she wearing??? Yes, we thought that too! With access to gorgeous gowns thanks to hubby dearest, why-oh-why did she pick this ridiculous creation?

P.S. Something tells me that the gown might be a Falguni-Shane Peacock creation. Update: Good God! This is a Naeem Khan creation. Eeeks. Thanks ‘Angel’ for the update. Check out details about how it was made in one afternoon Here.

Dinner, Stateside

The wedding reception of Shilpa and Raj maybe making headlines in India but in the U.S., the First Lady is grabbing headlines in the fashion world for wearing Indian-American designer Naeem Khan at the first State Dinner hosted by the President and the First Lady. The official guests at the dinner were Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur, who wore a simple black Bomkai sari.

Also wearing saris were Rebecca Olson Gupta and Bhavna Shyamalan and while Katie didn’t wear a sari, she added a dash of Indian touch by wearing a coverup with an ethnic design (very reminescent of Bipasha). Needless to say, the night belonged to the First Lady.

In Naeem Khan. Again.

A dress that was so lovely on the runway doesn’t have the same effect in its modified version so much so that you wouldn’t even think it was a Naeem Khan creation. Another Naeem Khan on Pooja that we don’t quite like. You?
