At The Chopard Party

Both Payal and I, like and dislike the look for the exact same reason… Two words- Princess Leia.

For Payal, the look was way too campy and the dress (The Row, Resort 2011) much too billowy. She also thought the white+emeralds was by now a tired combination at Cannes.

For me, white+emeralds is one of those classic combinations that you just can’t tire of. Like Travolta+Newton-John. :p Also, the nerd in me loves the blatant channeling of Leia. You just know that with this appearance, she’s going to be every science/math/astronomy camp’s fav pin-up girl! :p

Sonam is wearing The Row, Chopard jewelry and is carrying a Leiber clutch, all teamed with Ferragamo heels. (via Twitter)

  1. too much makeup, sad expressions, weird updo, tent-like dress. whoever helped her get dressed must really dislike her. it doesn’t take a fashionista to know the the cut of the dress is not flattering AT ALL!

    • exactly! the white colour on her JPG couture dress looked fab! even masaba sari was nice but this is plain boring…….
      didn’t expect this from sonam!

  2. How did she walk in this??! I think a thin gold belt and it would have been awesome. I love the white-emerald combo too. But she sure is taking risks, whether they work or not.

  3. Except for the heavy use of bronzer and her tired expression, I actually like this appearance. I don’t see much of Princess Leia…but the close up is reminding me of Frida Kahlo for some reason…
Would have liked to see her footwear…

  4. Horrible .. Such a disappointment.. aw cmon girl we expected much better .. where do i start ? make up, drowning-glory dress .. awful, actually, woeful !

  5. don’t know what to make of this look. The dress is really a tad too billowy, the hair is very princess leia, the expression is not the sweet “I am happy to be on this ride” sonam expression. And to add to all the rest, there’s the bronzed, too cakey makeup. I think this look fails. It makes her look like a shapeless blob!!

  6. whats wrong Sonam..? You kinda seem, sad. And I personally think, that look didn’t go well :/, but you are a really pretty woman.. you just need to hang out with good designers ๐Ÿ˜‰

  7. OH GOD! So much for high expectations from Ms. Kapoor rocking the Cannes. After seeing all this, Aishwarya Rai, any day please!

  8. And what is up with this stage/horrible makeup! Just because you’re at Cannes, doesn’t mean you stop looking into the mirror before stepping out. I’m surprised you guys pointed out nothing about her face looking so half baked and that bright orangey lipstick.

  9. No. Just no.

It’s a Frida Kahlo-meets-Princess Leia gone wrong. The dress is wearing her and is incredibly unflattering (the armpit fat in the third pic and the shapeless figure). Makeup is awful.

More I think about it, the more I’m convinced Sonam doesn’t have great personal style, just the money to by haute couture.

  10. ….. with the gowns, i guess its just what her publicist managed to get from the designers because of l’oreal …… The isn’t Ash that designers would be willing to lay out their best stuff for her…. if she goes again next year, i think she will have more choices ….. It does look from the face that she doesn’t care much about this one

All in all, except the ghastly saree, i think she did good …. i loved her red carpet appearance

  11. wow if this is what make-up on a l’oreal ambassador looks like, I’m staying miles away from the brand!

in fact IMHO it’s her make-up that brought down all her appearances at Cannes.

  12. Its not the best but on the whole this girl knows how to dress well – very well actually.

Wasn’t she unwell a while back? Looks like she got back to work a bit too quickly.

  13. How come she never has any iidea how repeatedly ppl point out how horrible her makeup is…especially since we know she follows this blog and reads ppl’s comments…sigh…

  14. That dress is just so wrong–I don’t even know where to begin. Way to vuluminous, and it makes the wearer look short. Not at all a flattering look.

  15. wait a second. WHY wldnt sonam recreate an Anamika Khanna on the red carpet again?! Imagine for a second if she was wearing wat she did for awards in macau(?) – the grecian drape (not tht i am suggesting a repeat, but given this dress, a repeat wld also be maaf) So gorgeous! Where is THAT gurl gone!?

  16. Very disappointed with the whole look. The dress looks likes a night gown, the hair and makeup are bad. The only thing I like is the bracelet and clutch. The earrings are also nice, but the style and color do not compliment sonar’s face or skin color. I am not happy

  17. i am in a serious state of giggles right now, because all i can think of tina fey in 30 rock going for jury duty dressed as princess leia, “i don’t think i should be in a jury because i am a hologram” (holding a playgirl btw). wait am i on a fashion website? yeah, princess leia…

  18. I think this dress would work if I had really bad PMS, it would hide the bloat and offer much comfort. HOWEVER, it doesn’t work on Sonam. It MIGHT have worked had she styled her hair better (looser, younger) and had better make up and more importantly, a happy smile. She looks exhausted, which doesnt help matters one bit.

  19. Ridiculous!! That dress looks like a sheet wrapped around her, the makeup is awful and the hair messy. Please this post should be retitled, WTHEYY!

  20. Whats with the bronzer!!loreal team over bronzed both aishwarya and sonam!! N it’s not a good look at all. Sonam looks so tired! Poor gal. Being a gal I can totally understand though..trying to look ur best, not eaten a proper meal for days so u can look slim..there is so much excitement building up to the event n then when it’s happens ur just exhausted. I do like her dress..but the makeup is just killing the look for me..

  21. She cracked me!! I think she’s shed a lot of weight and all that has started to show on her face! I hardly recognize her anymore…I had to see the her name in below the picture to make sure if it’s Sonam!! Maybe it has to do a lot with her weird makeup…guys don’t miss her 19th century eyeliner and orangy lipper!!

  22. I actually like the dress and emerald jewelry. But the make up is awful. Don’t think I want to buy the brand…They haven’t perfected a foundation for the yellowish Indian skin tone I think. Plus she had a photoshoot prior so that may explain such a thick layer. Ash also had the same problem. Anyway, Sonam is such a pretty girl. This is her first time, give her a break.

    • Ahhh…you wrote what i was thinking….l’oreal does not have makeup suitable for indian skin tone..hence why she comes off looking orangey

  23. i like white and emerald combo… bt not liking the dress so much, she is taking risks in fashion which i love bt the onli thng missing here is her regular attitude!! ..she looks tired and sad..normally she carries it all well with a perfect smile and confidence bt here i cant see it at all…

  24. Such a disaster from head to toe.Wow I expected so much better from Sonam. And yeah it sure doesnt take a fashionista to know this look is terrible. Shame

  25. I seriously think the L’Oreal team has NO idea how to deal with Indian skintones. Opinion might be divided on the clothes they wore, but there’s no forgiving the make-up on either Ash or Sonam. As the comments here show, they’re doing their brand more harm than good!

  26. its horrid..totaly shapeless..and the hair and make up is hideous. why have such great hair and body if you hide it away? the make up is revolting and that liostick should be burnt. what a huge let down sonam has been

she looks tired and that diva like posing we saw in the ad has gone. she isnt even carrying the look but is swamped by it. A big No No

  27. I was ok about the overall appearance till I saw the closeup of her face. didn’t she look into the mirror before stepping out? the make up is ghastly and single handedly makes the whole appearance look tacky. Sonam is a very pretty young girl with a beautiful smile. the make up should have highlighted her freshness and her dewy complexion and the appearance would have rocked. This makes her look haggard.

  28. Absolutely NOTHING is working here. Don’t like the dress or the hair but its the make-up thats an absolute disaster. Considering everyone calls her India’s hottest fashionista, how can she get it so wrong at Cannes?!!

  29. NOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Is this the Sonam that we knew. I was waiting with bated breath but not anymore. After all that we have seen , THIS is what she had to offer for her biggest international event yet.

  30. I am really surprized with her choice of colours. Have they given her the colour code as white and black or only white for her attires???

Epic fail here, the dress in itself wud have been alrt, had it not been for the hair.

  34. This is a moment for me, i love the fact that Sonam chose to wear the Olsens , BTW i love the Olsens sistes. the look is relaxed i love the tent and trust me a lot of people are going to follow suit, i was sold when Victoria wore the same silhouette at the royal wedding, i ve seen a tent dress on Mary Kate at a new york event and it was glory. Sonam is Epic and thank God someonei s finally on her way to sartorial victory with edgy choices.

  35. I am not liking her dress at all.Its not looking good on her actually.Like priyanka said ..I too feel that white and emaralds are something ..I too, wouldnt ever get tired of.I love the combo!

Coming to sonam’s look..the only thing I like about her look..is the orange lips…but definitely not her makeup! If thats how Loreal makeup artists do their makeup…be it on ash or sonam…I think they should stop promoting that brand…I mean seriously! How can they do such a major blunder!

Two things that you have to keep in mind while sporting red and orange lips are that-
1.You should know which shade suits your skin. Most of the shades usually suit fair to medium skin but dont suit olive skin.
2.When your sporting red or orange lips you gotto keep your makeup minimalistic.Maybe just a bit of eyeliner or light blusher and mascara would do or a bit of eyeshadow would also do.
BUT BRONZER that too with ORANGE LIPs is a BIG NO NO!!!! Its like a NIGHTMARE!!! What the hell!! . I could have done better makeup on sonam than these useless makeup artists!! Such a letdown really… ๐Ÿ™

  38. This looks like Princess Leia meets Freida Kahlo. I don’t like it. The make up is toooo heavy for this flowy, all white look. A belt would have helped. This doesn’t work on many levels. And somehow her expression says that she knows its not a good look.

    Reply
    • I agree…missing belt..heavy make up..but i ll give her full credit for trying something different..do like the earrings and change of hair !

  40. I guess Elizabeth Olsen got the pretty dresses, so this was left for Sonam. I don’t like this look at all but I applaud her for not chosing the save options like Elie Saab, Armani or Valentino.

  41. I agree like the Frieda Kahlo comments.. Though the first reaction I had was to be reminded of some german woman named olga because of her hair. and yes princess leia fits the bill, too.

Dislike her make up- the use of the bronzer is a bit excessive.

  42. Did she fall into a tub of bronzer? Did she put on her make-up with a trowel? Did she forget to look at herself in a mirror? No wonder she’s sad…she knows exactly how bad she looks! And just because ‘the Row’ is an edgy brand, wearing it doesnt make you a fashionista. Wear a garbage bag but atleast it should suit you. Fail. Miserably.

  48. Who knew Sonam could disappoint. There have been times when her choices have been questionable but this is shockingly bad! She actually looks pretty ugly in the closeup. Wow! Sonam with your flops and crappy acting skills I really thought fashion styling would be your thing. Uh until now…!

  49. It would have been super disappointing if Sonam turned up in something like a beautiful form fitting gown(read boring and uninspiring) which eventually will fetch her all the brownie points, playing it safe et al, but thank God she decided to wear what she wanted and not lose her mind over what a certain blog would say or so called fashion critics will think, i like the fact that she doesnt care too much, i love her for choosing the row when she could have easily done a Chanel, Armani Prive, Cavalli etc i am looking forward to a Commes des Garcon, Yohji Y, Maison MARTIN margeila, Jason Wu or Vionnet or Gareth Pugh lol
P.S. the make up is the pits, i like the hair)

It is a look that you would notice and isnt the idea to be noticed and stick out among the hundreds of couture clad lovelies
