Here is your first look at Sonam who picked a Jean Paul Gaultier couture gown. She looks even better on the red carpet, pics of which we are waiting on…

She looks drop dead gorgeous! I am having such an Audrey Hepburn (a la My Fair Lady) flashback!

Check back for more pics…

P.S. Per Rhea’s tweet, she is wearing Chopard earrings, Amrapali ring and Ferragamo shoes.

  1. Wow…. I was waiting Sonam’s appearance with a critical frame of mind… she didn’t give me a chance to be so…. just perfect….

    • i agree, its stunning. and she has amazing taste to choose it. i dont even see how the same person can also choose that hideous polka dot bedsheet.

  2. OMG! loving the gown, its fun, young and edgy, hair is nice aswell, suits her.
Not liking the make-up much, doesn’t give her the glow needed, would have liked to see darker lipsick maybe.
Yep overall a good first redcarpet at cannes.

    • So JUVENILE!
Why cant we just celebrate the fact that two incredibly beautiful women from India are at the Cannes film festival rather than pit the two against each other?

  3. Yes drop dead gorgeous, the beautiful, simple hair/jewelry go perfect with the unusual/ fabulous dress. Love that she has worn white, it totally compliments her skin tone

  4. I have a question:

How come ASHWARIYA always says loreal style her; she is part of them so has no say in anything, but here SONAM is also there as loreals “dream team”, but gets all the freedom she wants, has her sister styling her, UMMM CONFUSING??!!

Just seen lots of Sonam pics on another site Im loving her whole look more and more. Not a fan of hers, far from it, but she has really supprised me here in a good way.

    • For all ambassadors, It’s just the make-up that gets done by L’oreal.. They get to choose/voice opinions on the outfits, hairstyles etc. Rhea has done the styling for Sonam in terms of her outfit + accessories.
Aishwarya has many international designers vying for her to wear their gowns on the carpet, thats why she’s been seen in elie saab, armani & lanvin this year 🙂

    • Agreed! Sonam at her best!
I really like how Sonam takes risks with her outfits and here it really paid off! Hats off to whoever styled her.

  5. sonam wins…..this is high fashion, not everyone can dare to pull off this look….im so glad that she is there to represent modern high fashion Indian women.

    • the close up shots of her make-up are awful. She has far too much caked on….such a dramatic gown didnt need such heavy make-up IMO. Still love the gown tho, great choice.

  6. I LOVE her make-up! They have done a great job with that. And I think the dress was a good choice, edgy but classy and she’s Sonam: she owns the look!

  7. out of so many beautiful gowns why did Sonam have to wear this? The colour is lovely but that’s the only thing good about it . It is altogether a horrible dress and the hard cardboard like piece sticking out at the back is just so unflattering… terrible !!! I also think that loreal is deliberately spoiling the make up of its Indian ladies… saw Aishwarya with the horrible eye-make up on Day 2 and now Sonam has too much gold in her eyes too like… Fan Bing Bing who walked the red carpet with her looked so gorgeous.

    • Exactly, this is not a great look at all. The gown looks terribly made with that tulle overlay and one sleeve. The makeup is not flattering.

This look is getting thumbs down on other fashion sites.

Fan looks fantastic by the way.

      • I’m sorry but I don’t share everyone’s enthusiasm. The gown is works neither in a traditional nor a funky way and in case no one noticed her hair looks terrible which is a pity considering she’s such a well tressed girl 🙂

        Reply
        • ya exactly! i think that loreal cannot do other hair styles except mounting up all the hair on the head in a hideous way .Ash on both the days had horribly bad hairstyles… and now Sonam has all her hair piled up on the head in a strange way. I wonder how the other spokespersons of loreal like Fan, manage to look always so gorgeous and has everything just perfectly done… from hair to make up to dresses and accessories… just sooooo perfect.

What an incredible gown – edgy, great construction, great fit, everythings just right.

  10. She is one of the few in Bollywood who takes risks fashionwise. i love her for that. This is really Sonam’s style. Rhea did a good job, I wish she could style herself like this too.

Sonam also did some interviews/photoshoots for L’oreal and she wore some nice dresses too.

  11. ummm i really want to like it because the hair and makeup are gorgeous and i was to applaud her for doing something so different
but try as i might – i kind of hate the dress and can’t look past that

  12. Wow, now THAT right there is a movie star. She was brave to wear something like Jean Paul Gautier Couture on her first appearance. She’s a style icon.

  13. Omg, she looks so eye catching and fabulous! This gown is difficult to pull off but she has the personality for it 🙂

  14. Sonam looks beautiful, Love the make up but kinda detest the gown! Nothing spectacular. I really expected something better from her! Apart from HHC no other fashion blog has gone gaga over her! Strange no?

    • Actually i figured out why I dont like the gown. If you see the back portion of the gown sticking out, especially when she is standing straight, it reminds me of a duck. That was totally unnecessary. I was waiting for Sonam to hit it out of the ballpark. Why Sonam why???? :(((

      • I agree… the back pictures really make me detest the dress. i mean, there is fashion and there is plain stupid. The dress jutting from the back too was looking the latter.

  15. Sonam looks fab..my only qualm with the dress is that tulle one arm..i wish they had altered that part of the dress, it just does nothing for the amazing silhouette of the dress. Anyways she looks fab..congrats to Sonam, her dream team and of course her stylist Rhea for really making an impact on the red carpet!!!!

  16. She looks way too excited for the red carpet. The foreign press on the other hand looks rather bored. They must wonder who this internationally unknown popsicle is 😛 Go back to India hun. Just go back.

  17. And of course you wouldn’t moderate my comment. Since I had spoken the truth! What people need to understand is that there is difference between great style and great personal style. She has the luxury to afford many great designer pieces, thus people in India think that she is very stylish. But, she has no personal style. I have never seen her wear that a hollywood celebrity hasn’t. I’m pretty sure she follows blogs and celebrity fashion sites closely to keep up with what people in hollywood are wearing. But you are too biased to her to see that. Sorry P&P, but this is not fair.

We have chores and our family to attend to besides managing the blog, so if there is a delay in approving comments it is not because we are biased. 🙂

  19. Oo la la!!! Love this look. Its edgy and has some major drama without going over the top. Hair is just perfect. Nice job Rhea.
She looks as if she owns the red carpet. Such poise and confidence for the first Cannes appearance, great!

  20. She does look good! I like it, I had big expectations for her and she def came through, she looks gorgeous I would love to see her make it big! For people who are pitting her against Aishwarya though I think that’s very immature and silly. They’re both Indian, they’re both gorgeous but Sonam is what 26 and Ash is 38? When Ash was 26 fashion was not as big in India as it is now this all just came about recently in India (I’m not saying they didn’t have designer clothes they obviously did but it was not like how it is now..) Also, Aishwara has gotten a lot of flak for what she’s worn at Cannes but if you actually look at all of her outfits throughout the years she’s actually worn some amazing clothes and looked really really good! (Payal and Priyanka could YOU PLEASE do like feature on all the outfits she’s worn at Cannes including photo calls etc?? Just one pic per dress?)

  21. Not loving the gown but Sonam totallyyyy works it. The eye-make up is awful…gold seriously???? But she looks stunning still…the hair is great.

  22. i feel like the back of the dress was a whole different story. I think people should look up the back of the dress and see what they think. I too gushed when I saw the front of the dress but then I saw the back and instantly disliked it. Sonam does look beautiful however.

  23. I was happy about the fact that she didn’t pick the cliché goegeous Elie Saab or a Dior or Lanvin or something, but chose this very structural Gaultier. But I wasn’t VERY impressed by the gown really. I’m not left breathless, let’s just say that.
But pat on the back to her anyway.

  25. How many woman out here or out there would have the balls to wear something like that, its a relief to see Sonam wearing something that is not all about looking like a princess out of a book, and trust me red carpet dressing is dicey and as easy as it may seem when you are a public figure and you know you will be scrutinized and dissected, it takes balls of steel to wear something as edgy as that JPG gown. and she looked awesome and she can carry it of like its no one s business.

  26. This is what I call the Cannes look. She got it right from head to toe. I do not remember seeing anybody that good at the Cannes so far in the last few years I have been watching. She rocked it totally. What a perfect outfit, body, makeup, hair, confidence……Oooh la la!

  30. just cos sonam wears edgy clothes n wears stuff that hollywood celebs do doesnt mean tat she isnt original or has no personal style…i mean ..lets face it…99% of our b’wood celebs have no inkling of wat style is except for one or two…so if sonam is among the best dressed by following h’wood celebs then i cn only hope the others follow suit!!!!!!!!!!BTW…i dunno y u guys are pitting ash n sonam against each othr …y cant they both look amazing?:-)

not liking the eyes very much though.
to those who think she looks too excited – so? isn’t it nice that she isn’t too jaded to see what a big deal it is? i’d take her fresh genuine excitement over feigned boredom.

  34. PERFECTION!!! Love love love her look! Although she needs to start watching her makeup, have seen her go too bronze, which is so not needed with Indian skin..we have it naturally!

  35. She looks pretty fantastic here.. Not many could have carried off that gown. Hair is nice but am not liking the makeup. Can’t believe this is the same girl who chose that ugly white gown and polka dot sari!!!

  36. For the people who are wondering as to why she has that golden eyemakeup on. I read on some website that the theme, for loreal on that particular day was GOLDEN.Hence, the gold eyemakeup. Its not that she wanted to do it.Nevertheless, she looks gorgeeeeeouuuusss!!! I can never imagine anyone in the bollywood industry who who can ever dress up the way she has and carry it off with so much confidence!! This GIRL has it ALL!!! BIG thumbs up to sonam!! YOU HAVE done IT SONA!!

This has to be my favourite look of any indian celbrity in cannes alongwith the one in black armani prive that aish had worn last year. These two looks have to be my favourite and my least favourite has to be the one made by a certain miss padukone…who looked like garbage with her garish makeup, nest like hair..and blouse looking no less than a bra. FUGLY!!! *pukes*
