Sweatsuit(ing) In Style?

If there is anything worse than wearing matching sweatsuits to any other place but the gym (for us, anyways), its got to be the pairing of these bright colors with those brown bags. But, Shamita sure gets a special mention. Black shoes with a pink jumpsuit?!?

(P.S. Ash is carrying a Pauric Sweeny, Shamita, an LV speedy, and Shilpa, a Prada python drawstring tote.)

    No matching sweatsuits ANYWHERE!
Not at the gym, not in the airport, NOT ANYWHERE! There are plenty of ways to be comfortable and still look … not like a barbie doll. In a bad way.

    • Totally agree! its sooo yuck…matching sweatsuits??? never ever….if you totally want to wear the sweatshirt..wear a different color…..grey with black…white with black….brown and white…sooo many acceptable ways to wear a swetsuit and even then ONLY should it be worn to maybe take the dog out for a walk on a cold morning or cold evening..thats abt it for me!

    • May I also add that I’m pretty sure these ladies ARE trying to be fashionable. What- with their hair done (except Ash) and their expensive bags. I seriously doubt that these suits are what they where at home to be comfy. Thus is the problem with Juicy Couture suits.
One of my biggest pet peeves (living in LA) is the fact that most women who do carry around expensive “it” bags do absolutely nothing with the rest of their outfit. Their hair and makeup is done, but there’s nothing else.
Carrying around and expensive bag and wearing expensive sweat-clothes DOES NOT GIVE YOU STYLE!
GAAAH, had to get that off my chest.

  2. I thought this particular look of Ash in 2009 was hedious! On second thought, I feel she was really good and carried it off really well, after seeing the shetty sisters’ sweatsuit avatar!
And their bags are totally a mismatch, I prefer Ash’s version here too! And should I say anything about her glasses? I want them now!

    • i disagree I think its totally acceptable to be dressed comfy for a flight given that the rest of the time they have to be decked out anyway.
That apart it would have been nicer if they had worn jewel tone sweat suits vs candy tone ones.

  3. Tacky tacky tacky! Who travels like that, shiny neon colored sweatsuits, with big designer glasses and bags? Incidentally each one of them have a white undershirt/tank, which I guess is the only decent looking piece in the whole outfit.

  4. Well, i have seen girls all over in matching velour…
    planes,gym,shopping..
    and all kind afro-americo,latino ,blonde…
Even celebs on TV reality shows on US tv..wear that.
May be its fashion or super comfy.Matching thing i dnt like either.

    • yes you r right. it’s super comfy. i own one in hot pink but the only problem with this sweatsuit is the hard time u get to match the perfect shoes with it coz it’s wide leg; for gym any sneakers or tennis shoes can match but for shopping and other places the perfect shoes r difficult to find.

  5. cmon guys, leave them alone at the airport when they are going on long journeys. i dont see a need to criticize in their regular modde. if they are out in an event/party, it is a different matter.

    this isnt fair

    • Ha! The funniest thing is that in Aishwarya’s photo above she’s returning from a 1.5-2 hour flight (Delhi-Mumbai!!) which is by NO means a ‘long’ flight. At least the Shetty sisters were on a transcontinental flight and can be excused for choosing comfort over style.

      Ms.Rai was totally being a wannabe here…..

  7. I know it’s like a boo boo to wear sweats anywhere other than at the gym, but I think Ash and Shilpa especially because she has such an amazing body look seriously hot in them. I know guys go ga ga over girls in lil velour sweatsuits (because sometimes it is nice to see a girl look comfy enough to cuddle up to! I bet most men would pick Shilpa’s look here over Sonam’s menswear look any day). It looks super cute and at least they’re wearing them for a flight! I say hot hot hot! Love it 🙂 (I’m in loveee with Shilpa’s orange suit – I want!!)

    • Men might prefer cuddling up to Ash/ Shilpa in this avatar but that hardly justifies this look. Style isnt about what pleases men the most is it? 😀

No offense, but saying that men wouldnt like the blazer/ brogues/ boyfriend jeans trends and therefore this is better just seems like a bit of a chauvinistic way of looking at fashion to me. After all, most women I know dress up more for other women than for men

P.S: I’m not sure if I misunderstood what you were trying to say?

      Reply
      • Chocolate Martini: Well, there are all types of women. If most women you know are that way doesnt necessarily mean the world is made up of only such women. What’s so chauvenistic even if i (or we) commented that manner. After all, everyone’s free to voice their opinion.

        • LOl Saya..really?? ..Most women I know ( me included) dress up for themselves and for other women …almost never ‘FOR’ men per say….and seriously fashion has nothing to do with ‘what men like and the kind of women men like’…..you have got to be kidding me….that certainly deserves a blog…but thats definitely not this one….that being said…matching sweatsuits – are a ‘no no’ for a lot of ppl…..doesnt mean blazers/brogues/boyfriend jeans are not a ‘no no’ for a lot of people..its fashion..you can like it..hate it..have an opinion on it…..and it IS chauvinistic to think in terms of ‘women need to dress up so that men like them’….if you like that way of thinking..that certainly your opinion ….and thats fine and lot of women are like that…but its got nothing to do with fashion….

          • SS, I think u guys are totally taking it off a different tangent. It looks like Sharin and Says were just taking some liberty in talking about how men like comfy clothes over dressed up blazers. Yeah, it might not be related to fashion but of course it influences a lot of women who tweak their style to please their boyfriends or husbands. There’s no denial to it. I would not wear a matchy velour suit but I don’t see that as a disaster while traveling. It looks like people can’t say even a line out here in this blog. Man. why can’t people respect and take other views with a pinch of salt. After all, there is no Rifht or Wrong in fashion or who dictates what is entirely each individuals choice.

            Reply
          • @SS, Err..could u please direct me to the spot in my comment where it says–“women NEED to dress up so that….? All i did was concur to Sharin’s view that just included about how men like such comfy clothes. Everyday fashion and style for regualr people can be influenced by a lot of facors. I definitely dress up for myself so do my friend. But one can’t totally ignore the fact that there are girls out there who do it for other men.And yes, this is not a blog about those people and i wasn’t even going there. So do take a chill pill. lol.

          • I seriously don’t get it. There’s no hint of chauvenism in the comments of both Sharin & Saya. I see no where about the mention of a) women dress up for men and that’s what fashion is about b) sweatsuits are fashoinable and better than blazers/or bf jeans. To twist someone’s playful comment about men’s preference(which we all know boils down to mostly hot bodies;)) and painting it with a chauvenist thought and gathering attention for such twsiting is in a bad taste imho.

          • Agree with Sugar. Too much dissection’s been going on lately. I feel like I can’t even express my opinion about something without stepping on someone’s toes and being questioned about every odd line. Folks, relax already! Why the constant back-and-forth if someone’s opinion isn’t exactly the same as your own? What a waste of time, I say. 🙂

            Reply
          • Honestly, I’ve tried to refrain from making a big deal out of this, but I do have a couple of things to say about this whole back-and-forth deal:

            – Respecting someone’s opinion means being gracious enough to allow for it to exist along with your own, without berating the opinion bearer for differing with your view. I can barely believe harmless little comments drawing the kind of heat they do here.

            – Bookending statements with a “no offense” disclaimer doesn’t mean anything if you use the next five sentences doing exactly what you said you wouldn’t.

            – This is a fashion blog. This is a fun, fashion blog. I don’t see the need to be unnecessarily sanctimonious over small issues, especially to an extent that other people feel stifled.

I am not referring to just this exchange specifically. More like the general slant I’ve seen a lot of exchanges taking over the last couple of days.

PnP, please allow for this comment to be published. Folks, can we all just graciously agree to disagree and call it a day? 🙂

            Reply
        • @saya : you’re getting unnecessarily offended. I never said that you cant have your opinion, all I did was express my own opinion. I said it seems a bit chauvinistic TO ME to justify something a woman wears on the basis that men like it.
I dont see how that prohibits you from having an opinion fo your own?

And using your own logic the world is made up of different kinds of men as well, so how can you say guys will definitely take Shilpa + Ash’s look over Sonams?

Also I said MOST women I know, not ALL women I know. And umm…dressing up so that men like it IS chauvinistic. I’m not saying its WRONG or BAd, just that its chauvinistic.

          Reply
          • P.S – I’m not saying that you said women need to dress up for men. But Sharin said that men would prefer this look which implies that women would wear it because men prefer it. But like you guys said this is a blog for fashion not gender issues, so lets not get into that. Again, no offense intended and if I misinterpreted what anyone said, I’m sorry

            Reply
      • What men like does not dictate my viewpoint on fashion or style and I never said it does. I merely stated what I believe to be true; that men find women hot when they wear these kinds of sweatsuits *good body required*, and that men would appreciate this more than Sonam’s outfit. Who knows maybe males would surprise me if we polled them, I could be wrong 🙂 I didn’t say that I personally thought Sonam’s outfit was worse I just feel men would appreciate Shilpa’s more. My comments on Sonam’s outfit can be found in that post 🙂 Hope that clarified things.

        • @Chocolate Martini: You might find the view/or opinion of mine or Sharins chauvinistic. But for me it doesn’t ring that tone. And i simply stand by what i said. Chauvinism is a pretty big word in my book to throw it at some harmless comment which was made. Calling someone’s view as chauvenistic and adding a disclaimer about no offense meant ? really? This is exactly what TnC is referring to.

Totally in agreement with Sugar & Tongue-in-chic w.r.t dissecting each single word or phrase. All this reading between lines, interruptions, finding hidden meanings for a simple sentence commented is getting way out of control.

          Thanks Sugar & Varsha. 🙂

    • I agree with u girls. Men (least the ones I know) will definitely swoon over these suits or a little hoodie. Tons of women out there dress to impress other men. While my style might not be influenced by men but I’m positive it works for most other women.

      • CM, I am simply annoyed and not offended. Its not only about this thread. Similar thing happened with Tongue in Chic’s- Sonams-*girls* comment where people had to pitch in and explain that it was about the support. TiC has put it forth in the right way in her comment above.

    • Well, we are stereotyping men a bit right? I mean some men want women to put an effort in and look like they take care of themselves. Sweatsuits… :/
Personally, I would have trouble being with a man that doesn’t care about fashion and art at all, since it is so important to me. I would MUCH RATHER be with a guy who’s style differs from mine (BUT IS THERE) than someone who doesn’t care either way. Dressing him up would only be fun for so long.

  8. This is such a passe look, and frankly, even when it was in it wasn’t acceptable on anyone other than Playboy bunnies! Seriously, what are these women thinking?? Besides being able to read every crevice of their bodies, it does nothing for them! Comfort comes in many guises, and this is just not necessary!

  9. I think it is perfectly acceptable to travel in track suits – the most important thing when taking a long flight is to be comfortable in your attire. Ditto the bags – these are obviously large-sized bags which they use to tote around a lot of stuff. As for the shades, they are not posing for the pics, these have obviously been taken when they are unaware. Give them a break, folks!

  11. No one knows better than me how important comfort is. And even then, I would NEVER wear sweats anywhere. Not even outside my home. Heard of nice jeans and a sweater?
Also, PnP, do you really think someone would think of what shoes they are wearing if they wear such horrendous sweats?

  16. They are super comfy and warm. It gets really cold in those long flights and I find myself always wearing sweatshirts and yoga pants. I dont think its okay to expect anybody to wear anything else but comfy clothes while traveling. Don’t know about the celebrity obsession with Velour. La Pearla makes a whole lot of this….The colors are an eye sore but may be they only come these ghastly colors …

  17. I think they are just fine…totally acceptable! I personally think these velor sweats are really comfy…I love the subtle colors! Here, in US when women can wear during shopping and stuff then why not during travelling esp. long flights! Some people talked about jeans….but I don’t think jeans can substitute the comfort these sweats suits give!! Think again…

    • I agree with u 100%… I used to travel in velour suit ( greyish-blue ones!)… but due to the negative view point on them.. I travelled in jeans last time and what a hugeeeeee difference.. the denim buttons .. the creases under back part on the knee.. everything was so annoying.. whereas velour was super comfy… however I would not wear those in candy color’s..

  18. wow from may 2008 kareena post (https://www.highheelconfidential.com/plane-jane/) to jan 2010 shows a big difference in the attitude of commentators about velour suits.. we all flipped on p&p over writing negative abt kareena’s velour… 95% of the ciomments there stated that celeb’s r entitled to be comfy and do not have to dress up everywhere.. whereas ash and shetty sisters don’t receive the same judgement… I wonder why……..

We all (u, me, pnp) make big ho-halla about filmstars on magzine covers, when we all choose to commnet on post with big stars in sweat suits rather than other not so popular ones in interesting clothes. Hypocritic, isnt it?

  21. What I am wondering, aside from why someone would wear something so hideous, is why on earth they would wear such a thing in Delhi in April when daytime temperatures are already above 30 C. I mean even just the track pants with a t-shirt would be somehow acceptable, but the jacket as well? In India? WTF? I can almost excuse Shilpa and Shamita – they are after all coming from London in January, and that too on a long distance flight. Aish going from Delhi to Bombay in April – velour tracksuits seem pretty uncomfortable and unnecessary.

And like many others, I regularly travel on long distance flights in the comfort of normal flattering cotton fabrics without looking like a popsicle.

  22. This is just not done. I travel…a lot. A pair of drawstring non crush able linen pants with a plain tank would look better anyday. Comfort + style in an easy package.
