  1. Love the fact that she’s wearing sindoor and mangal sutra but the high neck blouse with broad deep front plus the sleeves are doing nothing for her..Wished she had pin up the pallu. The whole look seemed crowded.

  2. I don’t think it’s necessary for her to wear sindoor every single time she leaves the house. anyways, her choice of saris is getting more boring by the day. my mum wears classic saris that are much more appealing and interesting and vibrant than vidya’s.

    • She’s a brand new bride, so if she wants to wear sindoor on all her outings it’s her choice, not your business or mine for that matter! I wonder who’s to blame here the blog readers who expect her to change and suddenly sport radically different stuff because she’s being featured here or P&P who repeatedly feature the ‘oh so boring, traditional, oh my god she’s wearing sindoor and mangalsutra Vidya Balan’. By now anyone who follows Vidya or a fashion blog will know that she doesn’t care about your opinion and doesn’t dress to impress us but has her own reasons for doing hat she does! Accept it or wait patiently for her to change! no point commenting every two days, ‘yawn, boring, traditional’ etc!

      • one doesn’t see jaya bachchan or kirron kher donning sindoor all the time and they are both classy, respected women. it would look suffocating if they did that. i don’t think jaya bachchan or kirron kher have ever worn sindoor in years. it makes people look like they are in a saas bahu serial and it makes people look older than their years which vidya doesn’t need as everyone calls her aunty already.

        • Just because “one doesn’t see jaya bachchan or kirron kher donning sindoor all the time” doesn’t mean that Vidya should do the same. It is Vidya’s choice what she does or not does. And Vidya is a “classy, respected” woman too.

        • Well we don’t need to compare her to jaya or Kirron … Nothing wrong with wearing sindoor.. I think it’s a nice way to show the world your married… I would be more than happy to wear sindoor with sarees when I’m married..

          • Perhaps a wedding ring is sufficient enough to show that one is married. All these other accoutrements seem attached and overburdened with the suggestion that the woman is now the property of the husband after marriage.

          • This is in response to karishma’s comment below – couldn’t find the ‘reply’ button to that one.
Wow! It’s amazing how it’s okay to wear a wedding ring but other cultural signifiers of being married are suggestive of being the husband’s property! This is similar to saying – it’s okay to eat a sandwich but oh so uncouth to eat a dosa. In fact if we could derive a thing or two from western civilization – it is that they never take off their wedding ring and the ones that wear a cross aroudn their necks never take it off regardless of their choice of attire for that day/occasion. It’s only us Indians that’ll wear a mangalsutra with a saree and take it off when the outfit changes!

        • wow!!! I am shocked and amazed by the level of people’s thinking and understanding. I am one who is modern and dont give much a damn for traditions, but even I wouldnt object to a lady, newly married or not, to wear sindoor. I agree that Sindoor and chooda with western clothes look odd. But this is beautiful and very elegant.

        • Dear Anushka, i think your thought process is that of a modern day aunty who is such a wannabe that you seem to find donning sindoor and mangalsutra suffocating! I find you and your statements here even more suffocating. i think Vidya looks classy and mindblowing and eveyone should follow suit! From now on, i will not step out of my house widout my saree, sindoor and magalsutra so that i can suffocate more wannabe girls like Anushka with my attire!

    • Really put off by the thinking that someone choosing to wear sindoor or a mangalsutra is somehow in a saas-bahu serial. I think they are beautiful sentiments – and why is a wedding ring ‘sufficient’? A wedding ring was never really part of our culture so why is that ok and the rest overburdened?

I’ve lived outside of india all my life but have worn a mangalsutra every day since i’ve been married because to me that is what symbolizes my marriage (though i wear a wedding ring also)
I don’t judge those who don’t wear it but feel sad when i see people judging vidya balan for choosing to wear sindoor – that too barely a week after she was married

      • Very rightly said. I also do not like people who say that mangalsutra does not go with western clothes cos i have seen lots of girls (esp some nepali women) rock them where i live. I think its a matter of wearing both confidently instead of feeling inferior or carrying a tradition.
It up every individual whether they want to carry these traditions of sindoor and mangalsutra forward or not but no one should be criticized for doing so…

        • Well said. The problem is that we are out of touch with our culture. The mangalsutra and the sindoor have a deep rooted, significant meaning that is now lost in the midst of the OTT usage of these in the saas-bahu serials. What a pity that we associate these cultural symbols to be regressive.

      • She may choose similar sarees as Rekha but the similarity ends there. Rekha always had the ‘oomph’ factor, Vidya’s appearances do not.

While I completely respect her decision to dress the way she wants and wear sindoor in her hair as often as she wants, I’m also bored of looking at these same-ol same-ol pictures. Why is she featured so often here exactly?

  3. I like her going fully traditional way…These days when actresses try to look more younger…by omitting many indian traditional things from trousseu…she had guts to carry herself and her age and the fact that she is newly wed with grace and smile. She is out of race….

  4. Why, God? Why? how many more silkworms are going to be slaughtered for three quarter sleeve blouses? why not a different sleeve? why not a different silk? why not anything else? why always reinforce the traditional = boring stereotype?

    • HOw about all the animals slaughtered for the boots and bags the other actresses wear? Each Burkin comes out of a painful death of a animal. I hope you realize that. Silk worms too are boiled to their deaths but this cruelty is nothing compared to what the animals that are used for leather products go through.

  5. For me kanjeevaram sarees are pieces of art. Vidya can wear this piece for next twenty years and it won’t be out of fashion.. She looks gorgeous. Love the sindoor, manglasutra and she carries her ‘new bride’ look with confidence. She has such a smug look on her face. The highlight though, she is wearing bangles…YAY!

    • Agreed- she looks lovely and refreshingly unique in a style that is quaint and endearing. Seeing her makes me nostalgic for my school days when our school teachers would wear lovely saris with modest blouses, bangles, even sindoor, on special occasions like festival. I recall eagerly awaiting newly wed teachers each day to see their saris and jewellery!

    • Thats true.. I have sarees that have been passed from the passed 3 generations and they still look good as new and in-style because they are such classics. Silk sarees are almost an investment !!

  6. While I love the fact that Vidya picks sarees over other outfits, I do not like the way she drapes them. And her hairdos. Jaya Bachchan is twice her age, is somewhat stocky and yet looks lovely in saree every time. Less aunty-ish than Vidya even.

Vidya’s draping style is just awful, like those 70s mannequins. Short and loose hair, regular sleeved blouses, and better draping would be so wonderful on this otherwise charming woman.

  7. While she looks beautiful, Im not a great fan of the sindoor+mangalsutra combo and especially what it implies, given the current social scenario.
I wish she wouldnt wear them, its regressive.

    • Sindoor and mangalsutra is as regressive a cultural symbol as the wedding ring. While I agree that married men should also agree to reveal their married status as tacitly as women do when they wear a wedding band or mangal sutra. But this is hardly an Indian problem; the wearing of wedding bands by both sexes is a relatively recent change to an ancient tradition. Prince William inspite of being modern chose to eschew wearing a wedding band in keeping with the ancient tradition. I agree with the above poster who mentioned that most people here are reacting in this fashion (that is chastising Balan for her decision to wear sindoor and mangalsutra) because the images of Ekta Kapoor’s regressive serials are too deeply embedded in their minds.

  8. I think the three quarter sleeve and high neck…plus that necklace makes it all so crowded. She could have just stuck to earrings and mangal sutra and maybe the make-up could have been a little bit more neutral…it would have looked a little less crowded.

  9. Y’know, every time someone comments on “I wish she wouldn’t wear the sindoor because *I* (emphasis mine) think it’s regressive/saas-bahu serial like/tacky”, the very purpose of female emancipation is defeated. The idea is free CHOICE, people. So if Vidya chooses to wear what she does (and she comes across as a mature, free-thinking individual, not really given to doing things because society expects it), let’s not run down her choices just because we are attaching connotations that might not even be true for her.
As for her look, it’s beautiful and traditional. I always enjoy that on the red carpet.

  10. She is a married women and if she choses to wear mangalsutra and sindoor its her choice and none of our business. I just wish she chose more elegant saree than what she is wearing in this picture.

  11. Sindoor or no Sindoor, she really needs to start dressing her age. She can definitely look younger than this particular appearance of hers. Even if she’s going the Rekha route, she needs to realize, that she just ends up looking really big and haggard and not even a bit sexy. Rekha makes a kanjivaram look sexy, Vidya Balan makes it look heavy and cumbersome.

Rekha makers me want to wear a Kanjivaram and Vidya makes me want to steer clear of it.

Get out of your bubble Vidya.

  12. I like the way vidya balan represents the common indian woman like u and me. We are so much influenced by western culture and feel our stuff overpowering. But being overseas all ma life indian culture is the best. Although born and bought up in australia after i got married i wore sindoor, mangalsutra, bangles like for almost couple of months as a new bride in australia.vidya looks beautiful, the tradional stuff makes her complete as a recently maaried woman who is literally super sucessful without that size zero figure and so different than other bollywood heriones.Guys remeber even aishwarya wore stuff aftr her mariage, infact during her pregrany appearances she wore sindoor as well.
