In Manav Gangwani

If you thought you saw all the Manav Gangwani looks that were there to be seen on the Green Carpet, think again. These ladies too were in the said designer’s creations, they choosing to wear saris over gowns.

It was a sheer embellished black sari for Riya and an ombré one for Natasha. We don’t care for either but have got to say, Natasha does fare better by a slim margin.

      • Some “modern” takes on the sari are fabulous, even if this is downright tacky. Every garment needs to move along with time and will be improvised upon and modified at some point or the other. The issue is that it should be done tastefully.

  1. Can someone please explain to me the rationale behind the one-boob drape? What are we trying to showcase here? The blouse? Or the presence of the boob itself? I fail to understand it.

    • I agree that the sari here is downright tacky, but any drape can be carried off tastefully depending on the sari and the wearer’s attitude. The drape is obviously showcasing the blouse. If the intention was to flaunt skin then the blouse would be low cut with a plunging neckline.

  2. i hate both sarees equally, for a minute there (with Zeenat’s dress) i thought Manav Gangwani is not so bad after all, but although he seemed to have sweeped the green carpet 🙂 … i do think his clothes lack class and sophistication… sad!

  3. Nothing surprising – mess of a look in both cases. Surprise would probably be when they manage to get a look right for a change. So much money – so little taste.

  4. I honestly failt to understand what is so ‘designer’ about these saris. They look like some faux georgette blingy things one can pick up for 700 bucks in any hole-in-the-wall sari shop in Dadar or Lajpat Nagar market. Isn’t designer wear supposed to be exclusive, tasteful and unique? I mean each of these saris probably cost more than a second hand car!

  5. seriously, whats with all these transparent saris at IIFA? is this a major new trend that i am missing? cant say i care for it much. might as well wear a bikini top and a petticoat and get it over with.

riya sen is the worse of the two – one boob show AND transparent sari.

  6. You have got to be kidding me! Why would every second starlet want to dress up in bullshite that obviously passes as couture by the (in)famous Mr. Gangwani. Lack of imagination, especially at this time when the country is buzzing with young talent. I wonder if India will ever have its own Bjork/Lady Gaga/ Rihanna/ Katy Perry who are open to experiment?!!! Till then we have to do with Sophie Choudhary trying to do a Halle Berry in Gangwani *sigh*

clearly you are not a regular on this blog…
kiran rao, konkona, nandita das … or women from days gone by … helen, sadhna … in their time they experimented and turned many a daring designes and hairstyles into fashion.

dont make the mistake of thinking that just because bollywood does not have the same hollywood PR machine that it is without its fair share of fashion forward individuals.

      • By my post above I meant that Bollywood Fashion has become very generic. And ofcourse if you all follow this blog, I do not need to draw any references. What we need is an individual sense of style. True like you mentioned Kiran Rao is quirky and Nandita and Konkana have their own understated-earthy-chic (if I may say so) sense of style. But look at 98% of the Bollywood junta.. dressed in Manav Gangwani net sarees and un-flattering ill-fitting gowns!

Have you wondered if any of us have had our favorite Bollywood red-carpet moment that we remember vividly from over the years?

      • i disagree…..that konkana, nandita or kiran define any sort of fashion forwardness…….they r jus comfortable in one type of dressing….wen was the last time u saw them challenge their comfort zone……
n india does lack celebrities wich have dat sort of experimental streak…wish u had picked up better examples to support ur point…..

        • isnt it evident that you actually had to go back to sixties to pick a style wich became a trend..??? d sadhana cut…..

where as victoria beckham come out with a hairstyle every 3 years wich becomes a world wide rage….

plz dont get offended just becoz someone commented on indian celebrities…we are all indians, n love india n its culture to the core….but thrs no shame in accepting the facts

          • wot crap?!? lady gaga?? really woman? now u want desis to ‘dress up’ like her? n wot is sooooo special abt katy n rihanna? theyr quite nice no doubt, but thats abt it. true u cant compare riya n natashas fashion sense to a monkey but why brand the entire indian fashionista brigade as inferior? on the 1 hand ur dying for someone to emulate hollywood n if sophie does a halle, (extremely well i may add) she is spanked for being oh-so-bad. double standards, prejudice and generalisations….whew!!

  7. Outfits are a fail for both, Riya looks pretty neck up at least! Natasha needs to stop highlighting with that color, washes her out.

  8. I dont find anything “designer” in these sarees ..and I agree with the previous comment, Natasha needs to do something with her hair, that color looks awful.

  9. I don’t understand why the blouse need to be covered by the sari. Maybe in some cultures that’s how its worn but not everywhere.

    Reply
    • Say Riya wraps the saree around her waist that’s it nothing on the blouse then it would look so over exposed with tight short blouse and no sleeves.
Also sari is worn in general every day and inorder for it to look decent either it should be worn across the blouse or the blouse itself should be long and litttle loose say like a top. But then it would over throw one of the beautifull qualities of a sari which shows all the curves of the ladies but is still not vulgar (i.e if worn with normal blouses not these ultra short ones).

      Reply
      • Vulgar is such a subjective quality and it depends on the attitude and body type of the wearer as much as it does on the outfit itself (and ofcourse, the sensibilities of the person who’s looking at the outfit and deciding its vulgar)

I think these saris make the drape look tacky but other people (Lara, Dia) have carried it off. Its pretty narrow-minded to completely condemn an entire trend. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t

        • *P.S : I’m not calling you narrow-minded, your comment seems entirely reasonable. 🙂 But there are comments on this blog that call the drape disgraceful/shameful/blasphemous which takes things too far

  10. Is it just me, or is Bollywood fashion moving backward instead of foward? This is the time when style in India (well Bombay, anyway) is getting globalized, modern and chic yet all of the preferred celeb ‘designers (MM, Gangwani and even TT) seem intent on pushing tawdry, B-grade yesteryear creations on the stars they dress.
Its like they are moving away from class, grace and international appeal instead of towards it. If you want a sexy outfit that shows skin why not a minimalistic, classy backless gown or a sophisticated, structured, super-short cocktail dress. Risque saris can look classy provided the wearer has a lot of dignity and confidence but most often, in the case of ill-groomed starlets/ socialites, they end up looking down-right vulgar.
I’m not saying avant garde saris should not be made, Im just saying they are dangerous in the hands of women who do not have the subtlety to carry them off

  11. The issue I have with Riya’s sari is that all the various elements come together and make the outfit look tacky, and dare I say, trampy – the sheerness of the sari combined with the drape and lack of substantial blouse makes her look strangely underdressed.

    Reply
    • I have a dream. That one day Riya will come across as classy by dignifying her wardrobe. She’s got everything for it.
Seriously, what does all that transparency do, besides getting one featured on perverts’ forums? (who are like, “face? what face?”
@ Zara – Right.. underdressed as in, WHERE are the rest of her clothes!?
Both saris seem to rely on the choli to come across as different and innovative. But the black one says starlet and the blue one’s tacky. Those blond streaks are not for Natasha…
