Almost

The fact is, Rani looks fab waist up. Had the dress been a sheath (think pencil skirt silhouette) and grazed the knees or fell just below it paired with a classic pair o’ pumps, Rani would’ve hit this one out of the ballpark. No questions asked. As it stands though, this one was a close ‘Almost’.

Have to add, hate the rhinestone Fendi (the bag/baguette).

  1. turtle/polo necks and Chinese collars always make you look a little bigger when you’re short and not skinny! Just look at the difference between how Rani looks in this dress and the previous post in the green strapless dress! But she is looking her best ever! And HHC you’re right, that bag is awful…. 1995?!

  2. The shoes and the bags don’t work for me either. I would have loved if the dress was bit longer. It is making her look short. Love the hot pink nail paint though 🙂

    • the average chinese woman has an absolutely flat tummy, slim legs and no hips.. the cheongsam or qipao is made to suit their body type and rani’s is not the right body type for the cheongsam.

      • so true Beans. All the chinese or far eastern women I know are petite with little or no hips. There’s a reason why the term cheeni/japani guriya is used as a compliment.

        • lol Please, that is so nonsense. The “average” Chinese person does not look like that. Younger chinese woman who are conscious about what they eat and their image look like that. The diet and lifestyle of Chinese people has a lot to do with it, it’s not ALL genetics although for some it is, just like for other races. They drink a lot of soups, green tea, eat many small meals a day, when they eat meat it is usually a lean protein such as fish and chicken and eat a lot of dark green leafy vegetables. They eat grains but the emphasis is on vegetables more so than meat, and they don’t drink a lot of cold beverages. They also walk, a lot! So before anyone starts lamenting that they weren’t born with the genes that a Chinese person has, stop generalizing! Not all Chinese women have silky smooth hair, fair and smooth skin either. If they did they wouldn’t be obsessed with skin lightening creams and permanent straightening. Walk into any pharmacy or hair salon in any Chinese dominated country and you will know I speak the truth, and if you watch National Geographic or the Discovery channel you will see different body types in every race.

The “average” Chinese woman does not have an “absolutely flat tummy, slim legs and no hips”. No average woman looks like that in any ethnicity. That’s not how women were built. Also let me tell you that a traditional Cheongsam or Qipao was a looser fitting garment that was quite forgiving and therefore not designed for the woman you described in your post. Even in the late 20’s the more fashionable Cheongsams were a straight cut that didn’t accentuate every curve, it is the modern Cheongsams that are tightly fitted at the bodice and hips with a high slit for the legs.

Sorry if I overreacted but I hate generalizations.

  3. if you wear a neck like this, rest assured you will look short and frumpy unless you are reed thin like victoria beckam… plus if you don’t have a long neck and do have a round face, you need to give yourself some free space to breath… looks too crowded up there 🙂 … bad choice of footwear too

  4. Agreed, the dress is INTERESTING and I actually love her makeup and the nails
but it’s ALL about the silhouette…so no
It’s a shame too, she would have looked so much taller and thinner

  5. Shoes! WHY must she treat her feet so badly? Why can’t she ever buy decent pretty shoes? No Rani, you don’t have to spend more than 5000 Indian rupees on shoes, just please don’t wear such ugly shoes. Ever.
It physically pains me when the shoes are bad.
    The dress, meh.
The hair and makeup is wow.

    • In Urdu they say “paer shakhseeat kay ayeenadar hote hain” roughly translated as feet are a true reflection of your personality and when I look at all these actresses sporting fugly footwear and unkempt feet, I couldn’t agree with her more.

That’s a cute dress, but it just doesn’t suit Rani. And yes, she does slap on a LOT of make up these days!

  7. To all of you …. who don’t like Rani in most of her public appearances (and feel that she is trying too hard) … she is not that “bad” actually 🙂 …. it’s just that her movies are doing bad for sometime. If we set aside that bias (that her movies are failing) and the mental-block (that she is good only in traditional wears) … most of us would be able to appreciate her and voice the same opinion as P&P. I am loving her look here … her hairstyle … her pink nails … her make-up … and her dress waist-up. I admit that her choice of bag and shoes are bad (here and most of the time) … but she is just one of many in Bollywood who rarely gets it perfect.

    • Precisely why she is also one of the many in bollywood who get flacked for wrongs and praised for right! ;).

When was the last time Twinkle, Dia etc had the last movie hit 🙂 but they seems to get good reviews coz the blog is about fashion. Your comment on bias (flops, block) sounds pretty innocent to me but it doesnt make sense! 🙂 sorry, no hard feeling!

      • Twinkle and Dia were never big “stars” or never made it big to begin with, so they are given a bit more leniency when it comes to people hating them. They actually ARE judged solely for their fashion because there is nothing else to judge them on. I actually agree with Sweta, for the most part. I do think it is hard for people to see someone who they used to see in Indian wear a lot wear other kinds of clothing. They automatically chalk up their own discomfort with that of the actress “looking uncomfortable” in western clothing. If you showed someone who had never seen a picture of Rani before wearing only Western clothing, they probably would never make the observation that she looks uncomfortable. A lot of our observations are coloured by what we know of the subject. It’s only natural.

        • Sharin I understand the point you are making but Rani is not the only victimised one, there is Priyanka Aishwarya and all those stars who make it big i wonder if people who want the commenters to be considerate for one star would say the same for the stars they hate. May be you are not one of those as i have seen your positive comments on most actress throughout the site. but you cannot say the same for others.Sometime observation can be coloured if you like the star. So your argument goes both ways.

This appearance of Rani is indeed good here as i commented before i like her here. But there have been places where she is not at par like many other and is ripped.

  8. Rani has a gorgeous face…not sure how she started aging soo quickly though….she needs to change her hair a little looks like…wisps in the front framing her face making it look less round maybe longish bangs…dress longish just below the knees….or 3 -4 inches above the knees….with heels…really skeek heels……dont like her dress though….

thank you for dumping those clunky/chunky heels… and atleast going for some semi-decent shoes!
and the dress…compared to what you usually wear – thumbs up from me!
now if you’d just take a few more steps in the right direction – you’ll be nearly there!

  11. Well ,i loved her here except botton part of her dress.
Color of dress and style -neck is so unique and flatters her face and makeup is very good.
Dress should been pencil style/narrowin close to body as opposed to A line ,since already fabric is making her look bigger.

  14. This dress is so wrong for her body type… she has no hour glass figure and looks same width from top to bottom.
I have seen some chinese movies where the women look absolutely gorgeous wearing a dress like this. But they are slender built.

  15. This dress would have worked had she worn pumps. But I love the fact that she’s trying so hard… her make up and hair is great. We all seem to be preferring her in sarees etc, but she carries off western really well. Way to go girl!!!
