The Style Sheet: Making Of Video

Comment image 59

Update:

Here is the video…

Back in April, Priyanka shot the music video for her second single ‘Exotic’ from her debut album, ‘In My City’. Featuring Pitbull, the video was shot in Miami and was covered by Wall Street Journal.

Of the three looks that WSJ gave us a glimpse of, the gold denim look with the jewelled neckpiece sure caught our eye but that bustier sure felt like a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen. We’re guessing a lot of pasties went into this look. 😛

The oddest look of all, the illusion Jovani dress with the cage Altuzarra boots. Love the boots, just not with the dress.

  1. I’m just getting a JLo vibe (in a bad way) from her. Is that her way of being ‘exotic’? By not hiding under layers of foundation like she did all the time? Pretentious much!

      • @ judgevik – LOL! Although, they’re quite similar, Vidya and PeeCee. Both are/were selling some form of exoticism to the world that will not be accepted in India, unless of course it comes packaged in flashy Pitbull videos or Cannes photocalls. In PeeCee’s case because we hate dark skin and in Vidya’s cause dressing up like a maharani is so early 1900s and better suited for Gowarikar and SLB films!

      • It’s also because the makeup artists are American/western and they’re not going to put 100 layers of lighter foundation. It’s considered tacky. All professional makeup artists here try to MATCH your skin color, not change it unless it’s for a special reason.

  2. overplaying the exotic, being pretentious and trying too hard in her “forin” appearances. now who else does PC have that in common with? oh, another miss world, ARB.

  3. she looks great in all the pics. btw, it’s not very politically correct to call her song exotic, is it? she doesn’t seem aware of these subtleties.

  4. Even though she’s still extremely skinny it’s nice to see she’s not emaciated and she has some like meat on her because honestly when I see her in those skin tight dresses I’m like this is impossible!! Who looks like that?! I think people need to ease up on the whole “she’s trying to be so and so”. She’s dressed like how EVERY other pop star is dressed! She looks glamorous and trust me I’m not a Priyanka fan but people are getting a little too ridiculous with their judgments. I’m glad that she looks brown and not pasty white. Hopefully she goes far with this I think it would be nice to see people be supportive for once. And is there anything actually WRONG with trying?! I get in a sartorial sense you can sometimes try too hard but what she’s wearing hardly qualifies for the trying too hard comment.

  5. Wow have you guys properly seen western music videos?? They all contain wacky but high fashion looks! Despite the j lo ness of that gold dress she looks unbelievable! The styling was impeccable

  6. Super hot!
Nothing is odd or weird for me, comparing to videos from Beyonce to Rihanna or even Gaga. People need to remember the audience they are making the video for, aka western audience. This is pretty tame by their standards. But haters are gonna hate…
    Go PC!

  7. I don’t know about the whole thing… The styling seems really wayyyy off, like a decade too late.

She tries too hard. I don’t really care about her musical career but can she at least try to do something other than just plain, “been there done that” stuff ?! Especially with Pitbull, JLo is around the corner

  8. As much as i care two hoots for her videos..Why this negativity. It is not that she was a traditional women clad in salwar kameez and sarees that we are surprise to see her in this. This is a women who is most comfortable in shortest dress around and to her credit above dresses come naturally to her.
She is not the most gorgeous girl in town (Hell NO) but she is definitely not pretentious. More power to artists for try new arenas and just coz she looks west we dont need to bash her up.

  9. How come she is looki g so dark? In India she always looks fair! Like the dress and gladiators but not tog. The bustier is yuck

  10. I haven’t seen this video nor heard the song but i’m not jumping on the chance either. style wise, her makeup is gorgeous and she is wearing nice pieces, i just dont like the WAY she wears them. agree about the boots with the dress. and that JLO sheer with gems just keeps happening to PC all over again d’nt it?? the more and more i see her candid shots i’m realizing she doesn’t have much of a figure other than she is super thin! something about this whole rocker pop chick on her does not work for me.

  11. I totally agree… I just hate the way she carries that i-m-outta-this-world-attitude…..its oh so negative.
Is it just me or anyone else also thinks that she is wearing a size too small in the last pic. Its looks as if she is very uncomfortable sitting with too small pants….urgggghhhhhh!!!!

  12. What is the hullabaloo about? Why is there so much negativity?

    – Is it because she looks dark here while she looks two shades lighter in her desi appearances?

    – Or, is it because she is sporting tacky dresses here?

    – Or, is it because she is going international and achieving greater success?

Neither am I a PC fan, nor do I like her as a singer, nor do I endorse her styling sense. I do like her as an actress, though :-).

  13. – Is it because she looks dark here while she looks two shades lighter in her desi appearances?
Response: If she is two shades lighter in India … we are to be blamed for this. Our society is so obsessed with fairness-is-beauty … that we have fairness cream for V advertisements doing rounds, and we have skin-whitening creams outselling Coca-Cola, and we have our top-guns endorsing skin whitening products. So, why single her out?

    – Or, is it because she is sporting tacky dresses here?
Response: I believe, she has little to do with her styling and dance moves in the videos. The wannabe-attitude and the i-m-outta-this-world-attitude and the trying-too-hard-attitude that we see are very much integral to the act she is putting in … that of a pop star. From Lady Gaga to JLo to Rihanna to Beyonce … name one pop star who is not ostentatious? She is not even trying to be a classy artist like Adele. It is our conservative mindset that is probably making us judge her a bit too much

    – Or, is it because she is going international and achieving greater success?
Response: I have no idea why this happens … but yes, every time an Indian star has stepped on to the western territory, he/she has been ostracized. Just like Vidya Balan and Aishwarya Rai are making us proud today internationally, Priyanka Chopra too is! Debuting as an international singer is not a matter of joke.

    • I agree…

      1) I have a wheat-ish complexion and while I lived in India, lot of people would compare me with really fair-skinned women. After I moved to the west, many people have told me they love my tan complexion. Minority always end up becoming exotic… thats just how it is. Our society is very biased and critical to dusky people and as an actress, I see why she tries to “fit” our expectation of beauty.

      2) It’s a common talk to we Indians are always ready to put down other Indians when one turns out to be successful. Again, a cultural factor, I think.

      • Good to see people at least acknowledging that we are so judgmental and harsh on our own kind. Happy to see that there are some comments that agreed with my above statement and defending her.

I mean it’s so true one hardly expected PC to dress like Adele right?! lol.. also in light of the whole Jiah Khan incident.. it’s kind of sad that we rip people apart. I understand if it was purely on a fashion standpoint but half of the comments are never just about fashion its about our perception of how the actress is personally. We THINK Priyanka has this “i am the best” attitude (which someone above stated – who doesn’t have that attitude these days all you have to do is follow Rihanna on instagram to find out).. and we THINK that she think’s she is all that, etc etc. We don’t actually know what they are going through.

I understand that an actress today is aware that she is going to be looked at as not only an actress, but as a style icon, a glamor icon and that they need to look good… but who put those pressures on an actress? What if they have to put up with all of this just because they had one simple desire in them – to act. To be in movies. To tell a story. It’s not really very fair to expect them to be EVERYTHING. People like Vidya Balan I’m sure did not think in her head that she wants to be a style icon when she was older and yet we sit here and bash on them for their choices saying “well she should know she’s in that industry”.. it’s just sad.

        • While it is true that here in India, like you said, “our society is so obsessed with fairness-is-beauty” that actresses have to follow suit, I have to point out that Priyanka Chopra endorses a ‘fairness’ moisturiser from Garnier. While she might have succumbed to pressure and tried to appear lighter than she is, did she also have to perpetuate and promote this idea of fair-is-pretty?
As an actress at the top of her game, she could easily have refused the Garnier endorsement. Instead, she chose to become complicit in selling this whole fair and lovely idea to other girls.

          Reply
          • In that grating “no chip-chip” advertisement, the product being sold is a ‘No oil, no sweat fairness moisturizer’. And on the jar of Light Ultra, the dark spot reducing cream, it says ‘Intense fairness moisturiser’. Most skin brightening, dark spot reducing creams are proxy advertising for fairness creams anyway.

        • True.. there was really no written rule that “Actors” had to be drop dead gorgeous and flawles. It might be something we picked from the west? I mean look at people magazine and such… but then, why do we think that HHC is anything different? We make shallow comments and judgements on what people wear and how they look. I think it reflects poorly upon us than the people whom we comment upon. With each comment, I think we become “part of the problem” of the society the is highly critical on physical appearences. Something to think about… as we reflect on this industry and the whole Jiah Khan incident.

And truth be told, half of us on here will bawl out crying if someone walked up to us and told us “ewww, look at those shoes!”. But it’s easy to say such things behind internet.

  14. I don’t get the negativity..
Yes,she does look darker in these pictures..But every actor uses make up to make their skin look lighter.BIG DEAL!
She’s done so much for herself in the industry and she’s reaching for new horizons..
Which is good..Hope she does well in this field as well!
    Love her or hate her..
She has done way more than any other actor in the industry..
From being crowned miss world to the national award to exceptional performances in different roles and now this..
    Stop with the bashing …

    • And someone said, it does not matter where you reach . what matters is how you reach there ! Something to think about !
The negativity would have been significantly less if she had the talent to back it up be it singing , or acting(yes acting !) , or beauty pagentry!

  15. This is so sad and pathetic. We Indians can only appreciate brown skin if it gets packaged as “exotic” in a stupid Pit Bull video… brown is pretty and glamorous, but only when it’s “exotic!”
All my non-exotic brown sisters, please proceed to the closest MAC counter to lighten up with some NC25 foundation, k?

  16. Minority = Exotic. That’s it.
A western person with blond hair would be considered exotic in India. Tan complexion with dark hair is considered exotic in west.

    Reply
    • Yeah, except a western with blonde hair is looked at with fascination in India no matter what she looks like. A dark Indian with dark hair is not considered beautiful in the west unless she’s good-looking.

  18. Dressing aside (no issues with it, she looks like a star alright!), the first pic reminds me of her first release In My City, dressed all western, but when she danced, pure desi! You can take the girl out of Bollywood, but you can’t take Bollywood outta her. Tho my partner begs to differ.. ahem, I wonder why!

  19. Ok, what i think everyone is missing is that in desi environment we comapre her with desi actoresses and yes she is one of the best there!
But here, when we look at her, its like in comparison to J Lo, Beyonce… and I dont think she can match them.
    Not yet ..maybe in future.
    and hence she looks wannabe!

    • PC herself has admitted in interviews that while she’s an established Bollywood actress, she’s a complete novice in the international pop scene. She got the opportunity by virtue of being a top actress here (and not much by way of her singing talent, I’m sure there are a million better singers than her who can also dance). It’s unfair to compare her with the likes of JLo or Beyonce. PC has a unique set of talents and needs to be appreciated for that. Becoming a Miss World and a top actress (without being known for her looks alone) and then going on to venture into singing is no mean feat. She has something about her and as fans, we may not exactly know what it is. For all we know, it could be her people skills.

She got many views on youtube though but yet again, there are way too many curious Indians out there.

Please Priyanka, keep making great movies and stop singing!
