Return Of The ‘Desi Girl’

The Gods must have heard us (and you) because Priyanka gave us a much needed fresh look at the 2009 Rajiv Gandhi awards in a Manish Malhotra creation. Even though she stuck to her favorite designer, it was refreshing to see her in a suit vs a blingy sari and we loved that she downplayed her lips and worked up the eyes.

You love?

  1. would love to see the girl use more accessories. This is a nice look. but am tempted to add a bracelet or brighter earrings or something for her neck…

  2. No like. I’m glad to see her in something different but this has too many patterns and textures. And those shoes do not look good with this outfit. I’m not sure about the makeup – something seems off.

I’ll say it again she needs a clothing and hair makeover.

  3. sometimes i wonder why most of these women dont try some hair updos once in a while… you dont have to always let your hair down and look the same.

  4. I can’t believe I like something by MM but this dress is just beautiful except for the velvet thing down below. And PC looks quite lovely.

  5. No, no Payal you probably just love that she ACTUALLY played SOMETHING up…she always downplays her lips it’s just she usually doesn’t emphasize NETHING else. She’s always so bland..muted brown lips with pencil eyeliner n mascara. I guess it’s cool that she clearly is naturally pretty but it’s nice to see how much better she looks when she wears some heavy liner.. next I would love to see her with a bold plum or berry lip with her hair sleek and pulled back. She is on the right track! Yayy.

  6. Oops I only talked about her makeup not the outfit… YES very very refreshing to see a suit and not a blingy sari or a short tight dress. Finally.

  7. I hate to say it, but I don’t think we can even give her props for trying here. Yes, it is a minor improvement on her part, but considering her status in the industry, there is just no excuse for bad fashion. If she were just some random starlet, then yes, I would’ve been happy with the baby steps. But Priyanka, no.

Coming to the outfit. Yes, it is better (read: different) than what she always wears, but the outfit itself is very drab, just that it’s being covered by the chunni, so it’s hard to tell. Why can’t manish malhotra just forget about net and brocade?

  8. OMG!! Priyanka looks amazing. kudos to her for giving short dresses a break! is her suit really Manish Malhotra? coz it looks very Sabyasachi! “Inspiration” perhaps? I wish she had gone for strappy high heels instead of peep toes.

but anyhow, Piggy Chops looks awesome. Now all that she needs to do is choose a darker shade of hair color coz this one makes her hair look rough and fried.

  9. i really like the outfit and she is looking really good. Its nice to change it up every now and then and we were all extremely bored of her short dress routine, even though she has an amazing body and carried most of the dresses off quite well.
my only gripe – the hair. its looking not too bad but the regrowth is just killing the whole thing for me!

  10. Definitely an upgrade…even if it meant returning to her roots lol…MM has a Sabyasachin hangover…no originality left! But like the overall understated look …good for her!

  12. Let’s put it this way her ethnic avatar is a welcome change and these clothes suit her, more than the dresses might I say but… yes yes, but, the clothes themselves are not too great she would have been better off going with Sabya rather than going for someone who’s *attempting* to pull a Sabya due to lack of creativity and aesthetic.
I do feel bad but can’t pretend I like it either, plus the shoes are off and so is the mask of foundation/powder.. why should u do it when you have good skin?

I just don’t have the answers… sigh.. for how, HOW u can actually work with professionals and have access to everything and have personal experience in an industry which thrives on image and yet, not have a clue.

It comes from within I guess, and probably also when u stop trying to be something and have fun with fashion and experiment.

Now if she did that I wouldn’t mid no matter how far away from my aesthetic it was, and you’d know because she would look confident and enjoy the clothes allot more. I don’t respect people who go with the herd if they don’t believe in it… Now MK Olsen I revere no matter how much I my eyes widen when viewing some of her choices… because she has fun with it.

  13. I love this look on her and have a feeling she maybe reading this blog .. heard an interview of her last weekend where she mentioned she likes reading people’s comments about her on youtube, etc. I dont think looks more elegant on indians then traditional indian wear that doesnt show too much skin!

  14. I love the fact that manish malhotra’s design team (he obviously just does the styling) feel it’s alright to ape Sabyasachi’s design sensibilities. Does manish malhotra the label have a signature style? i do not think so. ‘Bling’ is not a signature style, it’s an escape mechanism in the world of design.

  15. This is a good change from her usual self and she looks good..The dress is good but there is a lot of Sabyasachi touch to it and I would never like someone who copies Sabya.. but please PC.. color your hair a darker color .. black maybe … this color doesn;t suit you at all!!
The shoes look a complete mis-match here!!

  16. Love the outfit. Indeed, very much “inspired by” Sabyasachi…she should have just done the real thing, but has allegiances to MM, I guess. Yes, the shoes are not good, but I think they might be her performance shoes. Wish she wore a slightly brighter shade on her lips. Anyway, gorgeous!

  17. I don’t really see anything wow-worthy here. The suit’s alright. Her make-up’s caky as always… And that footwear is horrible! I am not even going to comment on that hair!

  18. I thought it was a Sabyasachi before I read your description that states it’s an MM creation. I’m not sure I like the red lace at the top or all that velvet at the bottom but the rest of the outfit doesn’t look half-bad.

While I like Priyanka’s hairstyle, I do wish she’d color it either completely black or the brownish color she has on now. The mix-match doesn’t really look that good.

  19. YAY!!! She might’ve been reading the comments and decided to wear something other than mini dresses! Priyanka looks really beautiful here.
I think she looks her age in this outfit … those mini dresses make her look older. Anyone else agree with me?

  20. Yay, no mini-dress. Nice dress, very Sabya inspired as all the other comments have stated. But something is off about her proportions. Love the eyes.

  21. Nice but I like her eyes simple… or perhaps its her hair thats bugging me. I hate the two tones in her hair which don’t look nicely done at all.

  22. she looks pretty here. also dont think sabya has the patent over these colors and combos. this is a very tried and tested combo and has been here decades! so relax.

  23. She looks quite lovely. And I actually like the fact that she’s steered clear of bracelets/kangans because that would detract from the textured, layered look of the suit.
Also, WOW, this is Manish Malhotra??!!

  24. i wish she draped the chuni well..she looks great otherwise. but we have seen enough nude lips on PC..its time she put some dark lipsticks..nude lips make ur lips look fuller..and she already has sensous full lips!
