  1. It’s a regular saree, but the colour’s fab on her. Wish she had draped it better tho – it looks like a ghagra in the second pic.

  2. Just fabulous!
She is one lady who has her head firmly screwed on her shoulders, super confident in her skin and dresses to please only herself (unlike most of the wannabe’s – socialites and bollywood types). Such a terrific representation of India.

  3. wow…the color looks so gorgeous on her. Her look is a little plain, but I have come to accept that thats her signature look — the understated…no-fuss kind!

  4. I love Nandita Das. :) She looks lovely.

Of the three films releasing this week (or weekend) – Drona, Kidnap, Ramchand Pakistani – the third is my choice.

  5. well.. its a regular saree – so no points for her there.. if she had spiced it up with some jewellery, i would have given her a positive review.. for now drab.

  6. She looks like all dressed for some satsang. Boring color and boring Nandita. She always drapes herself in such bold colors and cheap sarees.

  7. She looks amazing as usual…I love her look. It’s honest and real…like the woman she is. Beautiful face…beautiful soul. She would look amazing in a rag even.

  8. I think she looks confident and radiant. She could wear a potato sack and rock it with that smile on her face. Love that she doesn’t subscribe to Bollywood jhatak matak.

  9. It looks like a typical Nalli Silk saree that all my grand mom’s had about 15 years ago. The other day I was watching some old wedding videos of my friends from south and every third lady was wearing this kind of saree on a regular function (not the main event).

Having said that, it looks good and her attitude is so great that it looks refreshing. I like the color also.

  10. I would give Nandita points just for not falling into all this monogrammed purses and wearing designer clothes that look hideous-but you wear it anyway because thats what you do kind of herd mentality.

For me, I don’t care if I pick up a dress from the Goodwill store ( which I have! ) as long as they make me look good. There is no such thing as too cheap ( money wise )

  11. Okay, beware, elitist comment follows – Nandita’s personality shines through, despite anything she chooses to wear.
For the fashion site – love the colour, but could been draped better, or maybe she is not posing for the photos properly.

  12. great to see her in something other than black shalwar kamiz..she is evolving and it seems that she is paying a little attention nowadays to what she wears…maybe its all because of a guy that she likes

  13. moni, I don’t think it is a Nalli kind of Kanchipuram. This is more of a mysore silk kind of light sari.

Rekha favors the Kanchipurams – they are generally heavier.

Like the color on nandita. What kind of bag is she carrying?

  14. Oh god. So she stars in some indie flicks and is “earthy”. But how does that make her a better person than say a glamor doll. I can’t stop laughing at the comments here “her beautiful soul shines through and no matter what she wears shows how great person she is through that angelic saree” or whatever

LOL whatever happened to not judging a book by its cover..

  15. Thanks @nefertiti,

I was talking about the Nalli silk saree shop that they used to have in Delhi. I did not know that they carry specific types of silk sarees. It has been a while since I have been to India so, I am getting a little fuzzy on some details..

  16. i dont agree tht nandita’s personality shines through this sari or any of the other hideous cheap saris she wears. By that logic, everyone’s personality shines through no matter what they wear. i dont think its elitist, but i really dont see it.. there are so many beautiful handloom saris out there.. I am sorry, the woman just has horrid taste.

  17. nik: it doesn’t make her a better person or anything; but it does prove Nandita has a certain courage to not get swept away by trends and just wears what she feels expresses herself best. In our time, we see so many desperate (I’m underlining the desperate here) attempts to look sexy and Western in bollywood; even if those girls look visibly uncomfortable, they decide to follow the trend just to be ‘with it’. I say Nandita earns points at least for her courage to be herself. Apart from that, it’s just nice to see someone looking beautiful in a traditional way!

  18. Nandita probably cannot afford or carry what others can. That doesn’t make her erudite or elite. She is just a wannabe Shabana Azmi with a bad fashion sense.

  19. I think Nandita looks great. She has this “je ne sais quoi” about her – where she looks great in pretty much anything she wears. I think it’s actually gutsy to go this simple.

  20. She looks lovely and simple. How is a silk saree “cheap” and “hideous”? It makes me sad to think that young desis out there think that tight, too-short bandage dresses are the way to stylishness. Shades of colonialism?
