Skirt Style

Maheep attended a preview event at Bandra 190 showing off her toned pins in a skirt by good friend Seema Khan who was showcasing her collection at the store.

The full-sleeved shirt did help downplay the gold mini skirt a bit but the look felt a bit disconnected. A loose blouse may have worked better here as would a contrasting colored minaudiere. What do you think?

    • I am troubled by comments like this. Who decides what is age appropriate for women to wear? I fear that comments like this are indicative of a larger intolerance that masquerades as fashion sensibility towards women and appearances. It shows how women are still judged largely and often, entirely by our appearances. And a website like HHC is ripe for people to air their prejudices under the guise of fashion or aesthetic or something equally vague and unpindownable. Terms like camel toes, muffin tops and lumps and bumps are casually thrown about while referencing women’s bodies without realising how wrong these are. I am sure someone will argue that this is the nature of the beast. Fashion, by its very nature, pertains to the body and women’s bodies in particular. And its feature is to critique how it is presented. But I am here to record my discomfiture with it and I hope I have made myself heard.

      • Let’s not get our panties in a twist over this. Afterall this is a fashion blog. And there is a concept called age appropriateness and that does not make you regressive or anti feminist or whatever. These days it is impossible for people to voice their opinions thanks to the feminazis / pseudo feminists such as yourself. The concept is still fluid and evolving so no need to get all self righteous . And you really shouldn’t be on a fashion blog is what I feel. No hard feelings, truth hurts love.

        • Ditto. Why are we on a fashion blog? Agree with Thea too, not every thing looks good on everyone. It a fact and we can all get over it. Recently even P&P mentioned about how black is worn to make one look slimmer. So? What is the big deal. It is rather amusing that they come to check on a fashion blog and then criticize others comments on fashion or style.

And she has the legs for it despite her age.. What age? She might in her 50’s I assume, cause nowadays it’s a young age and it’s relatively normal to look like this at that age, but whatever it is, that’s not a ripe old age, lol. She seems younger but in that case why would you call her old in her 40’s?
She might balance the color, the fit of the white shirt and maybe wear wedges instead of stilettos, her feet look crammed and uncomfy, which is not sexy.

      • agree 1000% with Bumblebee. Ageist and body shaming comments are really disturbing. I would add that along with the prejudices that Bumblebee already mentioned, classist and casteist comments like “she looks like a maid/bai” are also problematic and need to be called out on.

      • I clicked on this post to see comments which I wanted to share with my friend to try and show to her what I meant when “fashion” can be a (typically is) a guise for how we all conform to the “good/lovely/gorgeous look” which is basically “it makes her thighs look thin, and gives her an hourglass figure or ofcourse the age appropriate-ness issue”. Fashion is supposed to be about the clothes, how they’re made, whether they’re soft on the skin and feel good to touch, whether it’s innovative, new, different. Ofcourse, how a person wears this can be interesting, but unfortunately I can’t buy in to just that as being “fashion”. Anywho, the point of this was to say that I was pleasantly surprised to read a very eloquent and well put comment by bumblebee. Thank you, who – so – ever you are!

      • Not everything looks good on everyone due to different reasons – age, body type, height. Why is it wrong to say that. The terms mentioned are there for a reason and aren’t necessarily derogatory – most models and actresses work very hard (with a lot of help + photoshop) to maintain their bodies without lumps and bumps. They look better. Important thing is being healthy and being comfortable in your own skin even with a few lumps and bumps. Also why do you think all of this only applies to woman – I am pretty sure we don’t have a chubby hero/model either.

      • Personally, anyone can wear what they want. I have seen many middle-aged women rock a mini. Having said that, this is not a good mini. Its ill-fitted. But she seems comfortable & confident in it.

Bumblebee expressed her opinions without judging or getting personal. Though i can’t say that about the the response comment!

  1. What do we think? that’s a dangerous question 🙂
But honestly – we think that the skirt is two sizes too tight and two decades too late. Not a good look at all and extremely wannabe look that falls flat.

    • Because .. why?
“no matter how decent her legs look”… wow… this comment is a whole new level of regressive.
im guessing if it were up to you, noone with ‘indecent’ legs (whatever that means) would ever be allowed to wear a skirt….?
Comments on bodies, age, etc. in a fashion blog are so common but so truly unwelcome..

Having said that, the skirt is ridiculously tacky and a throw back to 80s in a baaad way 😛

      • Ouch…regressive. …. I have been described as stubborn but definitely not regressive. My comment mentioning the ‘decent pins’…was a compliment, unfortunately displayed in a tasteless fashion . Let me put it another way… imagine Kangana Ranaut, oh heck, even Shradda Kapoor, Nargis Fakhri, Frieda Pinto ….in the same skirt (you described as tacky but I think rather cute), same shirt, same shoes, same make-up, same hair etc. etc. I can guarantee that our comments would have been far more positive.

  2. Agree with bumblebee and Sup above. The finality and the self-righteousness conviction with which comments like ‘this is not age appropriate’ are made, truly boggles the mind. Yes that skirt is short, but that can hardly be the criteria for people coming out in droves to lynch a woman for her sartorial choices. If I didn’t know better I’d assume that she was in her early thirties (point I’m trying to make is that we just know her actuall age because she’s a celebrity. It totally discounts the fact, that she looks great regardless). She’s got great legs and she’s playing to her strength…aka her enviable figure. If the comments were to the effect of her clothes not bringing out the best in her, even on the basis of subjective criteria- let’s say, something like ‘the length of the skirt messes with the proportions of the outfit’- it still brings something to the discussion that is pertinent to a fashion blog. How does ‘this is age inappropriate’ contribute anything towards taking us further in our understanding of fashion? So I get it that this is a fashion blog and people will comment on appearances. And yet by the very same standards, her appearance is perfectly fine. It’s just our knowledge via google of her age, that is derailing certain comments!

  3. If an age appropriate discussion in sartorial choices is inappropriate then adults might as well dress in Onesies and be done. I dont think Feminism has anything to do with the sentiment that a few have expressed here. A Shah rukh in yuppy teenagy clothes would get as bad a rap and Maheep gets for that ill fitting mini. Its just that men’s clothes are borderline boring and uni-age, so they dont get as many comments in this vein.

  4. The responses here about the age innapropriate comment surprise me! There are clothes designed for infants, toddlers, teens and then adults. If a little girl (celebrity or otherwise) wore a gorgeous tutu or the like I’m pretty sure most people would say its cute. If an adult wore the same thing almost every single person commenting here would find it ridiculous. That’s because it is not age appropriate!!!!! Period!
We really need to get over this new concept of being overly sensitive about every darn thing!

    • I agree completely!

Also size appropriateness is good… Everybody is blessed with a different body type… Wearing size appropriate clothes makes you look your best… That is where styling comes in… Noone is saying that it is wrong to be of a particular body type

I don’t care for the skirt much but was so surprised at the reactions that I felt the urge to comment

      Peace y’all!

  5. Different strokes for different folks. Some people snark at the fashion, others at body/age/class and some others snark at the snark. So there’s something for everybody here. 🙂

  6. That skirt is way too short and I do agree with the comments above saying stuff like “at her age blah blah blah..” Set a dangerous precedent. I personally wouldn’t give two shits if I saw this person at a party and she happens to be wearing this skirt.

  7. Personally I think Maheep looks SMASHING. Great legs of course she should show them off – I would too – and a gold mini is way cool. And you can NEVER go wrong with a crisp white shirt, red lipstick, sleek hair combo – its a classic combo.

Why are some women so mean? And not only mean to other women, but mean by nature. I wonder are they this awful to their friends and people they meet or do they save all their vitriol for the anonymous hide in your bedroom and make nasty comments Internet. Now that is a tacky and “age-inappropriate” thing to do – grow up and learn to be nice to each other.

It was so refreshing and inspiring to read the thought provoking and intelligent comments by bumblebee and Jiminywiminy.
