On The Red Carpet

Also at Cannes were Kanishtha and Sabyasachi with the designer having dressed the Miss India.

Wearing an ornate Sabyasachi lehenga, Kanishta channeled modern royalty and, as pretty as she did look, the fabulous look seemed a tad out of place on the red carpet.

Also, just how dapper does the designer himself look? Loved Mr. Mukherjee’s appearance on the red carpet.

  1. FABULOUS!!!! I can’t stop staring at Kanishtha…absolutely gorgeous!!

PnP, I can understand why you feel that this ensemble is out of place on the red-carpet…it does look bridal meets designer royalty meets costume drama…but if the impractical JPG gown Sonam was wearing or the see-through gown on Mallika can fly on the red-carpet, I don’t see why this can’t 🙂

  2. I’m loving the Dupatta and the Lehnga… and how beautiful would it look in ‘wedding colors’…. but again..?…what were they doing in Cannes ….???

  3. LOVE the lengha.. it’s so gorgeous. The blouse and chunni are not working for me.. but the lengha is so pretty!
    And I love Sabya’s sherwani!

    • ditto. I wish the blouse were more itsy bitsy with black and red and gold zari/zardosi work and the dupatta having more gold and less red .
Anyways kudos for Sabya.Donno what he is doing there but well deserved to be there .(How i wish Manish arora wd also be present along with one of his creation).

  4. i think she looks absolutely marvellous. what is so “out of place” about this look? who decides whats “in place” anyway. the idea is to give the red carpet its due regard and making an effort. even Fan bing bing wore a traditional outfit at the redcarpet, and all the ‘real’ fashion blogs always appreciate it.
pnp you guys are serious nitpickers. sometimes its okay to swoon over someone even if theyre not stars/established ‘fashioniastas’

  5. She doesn’t look very confident in that look – someone with confidence like Sonam (not a huge fan usually) could’ve pulled this out-of-place outfit off with ease.

    • Haha my thoughts exactly..
But yeah regarding what they are wearing, I love Sabya’s look.. very suave.. And I love her lehenga.. The blouse could’ve done with some work, and though it is not “conventional” red carpet attire, she’s looking gorgeous in it.. It’s good to see someone young showing up at an international event in traditional Indian wear. 🙂

  6. The actual top and lengha skirt are very red carpet appropriate, just the dupatta should have been worn differently, not so over the top like this.
    Otherwise I like the outfit.

  7. the lanhga is really pretty .those red patches on chunni enhances the look…….i have little bit of problem with that blouse which is plain black….n comming to her face she looks nervous and nt comfortable……..like a statue…

  9. LOVE it !! its regal, not OTT with shimmers, sober and Stunning at the same time….I would take this as a representative Indian fashion than one boob show ugly chiffon sarees ANY day !!

  10. I LOVED this appearance the first time I saw it. But I can understand why everyone would not like it. It has to be viewed in a certain way while looking at it. For me, I love it because I see it as a designer who is showcasing his creation … and so the mannequin look works for me 🙂 And of course the lehenga is a work of art.

  11. She should have skipped the bangles and tika, and worn the pallu to one side instead of drawing it over the hair. Nevertheless, i love the dress. Just not suitable for red carpet.

  12. It’s a lovely lehnga….I think it would have been more red-carpet-appropriate if the dupatta was not draped over the head.

  13. I love the outfit – the lehenga and the dupatta are beautiful and have a beautiful contrast, just wish the dupatta was draped a little differently and not in such an editorial way.

  14. She would have looked much better and red carpet -appropriate if she would have worn the chunni differently…this look is to village bride-ish for red carpet that too at Cannes.

  15. In a true way representing India…i think dis is what the west is more interested in…for us as Indian we feel its very bridal and not red carpet appropriate …but as someone rightly pointed its way better than sonam n mallika…

  17. Absolutely love it! It’s different yet looks elegant enough for the red carpet. The model is so gorgeous, much better looking than hyped up ash rai or sonam

  18. the designer looks flawless….the lady looks dead….no matter what you wear…you should be confident…it the opposite for her…..she could have skipped the mang tika…..she would have looked better with loose curls……

  19. Sabya looks terrific. Best dressed man at Cannes. Period.

Wish other Indian men would follow suit and not leave it to the women to showcase our clothing 🙂

  20. Wow! What a lovely, lovely lehenga. Beautiful. But then, its more bridal wear, so I’m not sure how appropriate it is for Cannes.

But the man, he looks dapper!

  21. WoW! Love the skirt and the dupatta too! But,yes I agree this would have looked nice on the runway..looks out of place on the red carpet.. I heart Sabya’s outfits…he is the most talented and best designer right now in india according to me…Love the way he plays with textures and colors… 😀

  22. love everything about her look, except the jewelry especially what she has on her head. The outfit is soooo beautiful that the rest should have been kept to a minimum. Sabyasachi look soooo handsome, I loove his outfit, especially the shawl, and the churidaar they fit him so perfectly. Oh My God, fabulous.

  23. this is just too weird on the red carpet…and why are people saying sabya is the best dressed man? he’s clearly average. i like his shoes.
(i must say its also an upgrade from regular sabya clothes which remind me of fabindia bedsheets and curtains)
but the whole look, stagey and weirddd.

  24. wow, she looks divine! and mr. mukherjee looks very handsome. as someone who lives in the west i can assure you, such attire on the red carpet is far more appealing than the usual haute couture [not that i don’t like them any less!] we see.

india should be very very very proud right now.

p.s i think kanishta stood in for rani mukherjee at the last minute for some reason?

  25. Guys you should cover another kolkata denizen Paoli Dam on the cannes red carpet. She looked fab. Lets face it not everybody can afford JPG, Ellie Saab or even a sabyasachi. She did a traditional dhakai sharee with real elegance.

    • Yes, I saw her pictures too – she looked absolutely divine on the red carpet as well as the Eat and Dance India party.

  26. The lehenga is pretty, the look a regular staple from sabya’s bridal couture wear since the past few seasons… what’s not working at all is the whole drape of d dupatta..wearing a lehenga on d red carpet does highlight d whole “exotic east” concept well but draping d dupatta on d head wid all that jewellery makes d look very costumey almost like a Miss UNiverse national costume round…however I can probably understand why d designer wud go wid tht look…red carpets r meant to b all abt selling ure merchandise and sabya picked this out of his collection probably bcoz this look is what he’s seeking to sell to his international audience. Its gimmicky to say d least!

  28. Its so nice to know that Sabyasachi actually creates such beautiful ensemble as well. I find it very difficult to think past Vidya balan and her sarees whenever Sabyasachi is mentioned.

  29. Beautiful, the artist and his art piece!! She looks gorgeous, I think if she was walking by herself she would be better off without the dupatta over her head. But this is his showcase, so she looks perfect.

How awesome does he look?! Sabya rocks!!
