Sari Style

At two different store launches, spotted Kajal in silk saris. Whether you like or dislike the saris, you’ve got to give her props for wearing/draping them well.

  1. I would take these anyday to those tacky sarees people wear with their pallu’s falling off . Agreed not the best of sarees. But I still like the blue one and how wonderfully draped on kajal .

  2. I actually like both of them, especially the green one. Interesting.

Me wearing them….different story. I’m 5’10”, so I stick out enough without wearing the entire color spectrum.

She pulls it off. Pretty well actually.

  3. I have to disagree with the others – the green saree is pretty, the brocade one is a little too bright. She pulls them off though with the beautiful draping and lovely smile.
Her dressing is very much in line with South Indian sensibilities. Not everyone likes to look at kitschy Masaba sarees draped over 1/2 a chest!

  4. The greens very interesting… But the blue looks like its out from her grandmas closet….though both the sarees are draped really well !

  5. to all those who dont know their sarees …. They are not tacky at all these are traditional weaves of India. The gree one is a Paithani ( maharashtra) and is one of the most treasured peices an indian girl can have in her wardrobe. It would cost an easy 45 -70 K to get one. TACKY???
The blue is a banaras brocade another tradition that has been on for hundreds of centuries.
I always thought fashion bloggers and commentators would know all of this >
GALS it is not just knowing your DVF and pythons!

        • Dictionary meaning of tacky:
2.Showing poor taste and quality: “his tacky decor”.
Quality is obviously of the highest standards…. it has a 200 year old history
as for poor taste any person apriciating an ancient art has more taste than manish malhotra or masaba types!
as for the price i quoted it only to let people know that it is treasured and priced so ….

    • Tacky sari is tacky. My mother has a few Paithani saris…one in particular, a black with a red border, is so beautiful, the colors so vibrant, complementary and tasteful. I must confess I couldn’t easily identify this one as a Paithani but I find the color combo in Kajal’s sari unappealing and tacky. What has the cost got to do with whether it looks tacky or not!

  6. The Paithani is beautiful. She looks good in both. If she had skipped the necklaces for the brocade, it would have been a lot better, but she is representing a wedding mall, which includes jewellery I guess.

The drape is simply perfect. The broader the pleats and it would have been matronly, thinner would have been trashy. This is elegantly showing off her curves.

  7. I think our tacky ” designer” saris are influencing traditional weaves. Somehow, our mothers and grandmothers wore both banarasis and paithanis that did not look so gaudy. South Indians wear bright colours, but a kanjeevaram design has its own schemes, they never look quite so hideous. Benarasi saris can be so classy and elegant. Contrast and clash are two very different things. Also that clashing wave border is not traditional. SO sad really.

  8. These sarees have nothing to do with south indian sensibilities….

It is like saying a gaudy red lehenga is fine as it aligns with North Indian sensibilities…..

Please don’t generalise based on some tacky people you might know from a certain culture….

  9. Whoa! I love traditional sarees. But these are bright. She carries them well though! My gripe is the draping…too prim for my liking. If she had allowed the pallus to flow…(not pleat them), she would have looked better.

  10. I am sorry these are not appealing at all, I love traditional weaves and these ones are plain fugly, just like there are designer wear there are fugly. And expensive does not connote taste or appealing design sensibilities.
