Kanjeevaram Queens

What’s a reception without an appearance of a heavy-duty ‘Kanjeevaram’ sari and doing the honors were both Jaya Prada and Rekha. Although I have a soft spot for both Jaya and Rekha, have to give this one to Rekha for wearing it better.

  1. I love Rekha! as long as she doesn’t act in B grade movies with Mallika. Only she can carry the OTT gold jewelry with sindhoor and the rest of the accessories.

  2. its all about the draping isnt it… with a kanjeevaram u cannot pin it till its pinned like an airhostess saree …
rekha has completed the look beautifully with the accessories

  3. could not disagree more. rekha usually gets its right with the kanjeevarams. but any edge she had with the drape was totally lost with that atrocious work on the border and at the pleats. also, it’s not clear that these are, in fact, kanjeevaram sarees. sorry, payal, but you guys missed the mark on this one.

  4. rekha rocks! she looks gorgeous.gestures are funny tough..as if she’s blessing the crowd or something.

Jaya prada looks okay too. dont think that jewellery does justoce to her saree though.

    • She wears sindoor because she feels like it and according to her it looks good on her. Times have changed and more power to her for doing this. Her husband passed away many years back, there are people who would want her to wear only white.

      • “feels like it” is a damn good reason, if you ask me. I was just curious if it had been addressed before. By the way, I didn’t know she was a widow. That makes me respect her “doing her own thing” determination ever more.

  5. Ur kidding, right?? Rekha looks loud and tacky. We’ve seen her in this colour soo many times! And that crystal / sequin work on a kanjeevaram just kills the beauty. Jayapradha, on the ther hand, (minus the loud necklace) looks so much more elegant.

  6. err…. is rekha wearing sindoor ? brings flashback of the time she wore it at some premiere at the height of her affair with amitabh …. whats the reason this time – secret marriage or fashion statement …

i think neither looks appropriate . the colour, the jewellery, the heavy saree would suit the dulha/dulhan ki maa … too much of gold and red to wear at a non-ghar-ki-shaadi

  7. Even though I think Jayas saree is more beautiful, nobody can compete with Rekhas whole ‘look’ – its the saree, the amazing temple jewelery, she just has this unique kind of etnic/vintage thing going on that I love. The only thing I would say is I wish she would trim or tie up her hair, as long flowing tresses can look odd on a mature lady. Its still Rekha all the way for me though!

  9. Ugh.
If only Rekha would take off that neklace and keep only the earrings.
Also, that “purse” (if you can call it that) is the bane of my existence. When will those embroidered tasseled bags from HELL disappear!?!?

  10. While I dont particularly like Rekha’s ensemble this time around, I have to agree no one rocks traditional Indian silk like her. Which is why I’m shocked at her outift here.

JP’s look is so much better (minus the tassles). In fact, this should be like a lesson: how to do bling in a traditional and elegant way vs. how to do bling in a way that takes it beyond the relam of cultural-specific appropriateness to universal OTT

For all those of you who find kancheevaram saris in general too much gold/ too tacky it’s like calling a chic minimalistic black workwear suit dull. Different things work for different occasions and locations. Judge traditional south Indian clothes by traditional south Indian standards. Just my op, no offense

However, I dont find either of these looks particularly special. Don’t get me wrong they are VERY nice but also the kind of thing that every second woman in Madras could put together.

    • and what with ‘every second woman in madras’ who could put it??? and why does it have to be special ONLY to appear in HHC, HHC write anything that looks lovely and beautiful and also enhances the point you can look good in anything as long as you can carry it off well

  12. Rekha has worn this saree before in a different event. I also think she should take a break from this kind of purses. Wouldn’t she look gorgeous in some Judith Leibers?

  13. Rekha’s makeup is always very 80ish and the untrimmed unkempt hair just makes her look like a wish. I wish she’d go for a makeover though because she is a real goddess.

  15. Jayaprada anytime looks better than Rekha…….Rekha has a monotonous look always. Jaya can be found in different attires.

JP has the natural beauty, although here she could have taken the pallu single without pinning and minus the huge necklace.

Jayaprada is more beautiful than Rekha

  16. Jay Prada looks like your average middle class house wife here( and that awful brown hair). Rekha on the other hand looks like a goddess come to life.
