Sari Style- Part Deux

While Ms. Bachchan picked a more traditional sari, it was a multi-color cocktail sari for Ms. Singh at her event.

Love Mrs. B’s look.

P.S: Do the colors of Rashmi’s sari remind anyone else of the psychedelic printDolce and Gabbana?

    • I am not entirely sure, but these are called “pola” in Bengal; they are bangles made with red coral and are worn by married Hindu women in Bengal. Ms. Bachchan’s looks like a slightly thicker version of the red coral bangle that most Bengali women wear.

  1. Jaya Bachchan sari is really excellent.

There is something about these traditional sarees that make them timeless and I find myself drawn toward celebrities like Kirron Kher, Jaya Bachchan, Nandita Das (who I think is uber classy in her textured silks and cottons) and Rekha (though her makeup is almost always OTT) who really showcase India’s rich textile heritage. Just can’t say the same about all those jhakmak sarees which most Bollywood celebrities seem to favor these days and which have no personality in spite of their hefty price tags.

That said, a traditional necklace with an antique finish would have gone so much better than the 3-strand pinkish ruby (or is it spinel?) necklace that Ms. Bachchan chose to wear.
