Sari Style: Part Deux

Comment image 29

It was a look I was hoping to see at one of the more formal events but am still happy to see Jacqueline don the traditional Sri Lankan kandyan sari at the press conference. But, what’s with the no jewellery? She looks so bare and unfinished. Feels like the idea to wear one came suddenly and there was no time to get a proper look.

P.S. Correct me if I got the style wrong.

  1. No no it’s right. The sari is very simple and it’s cotton (plus I don’t personally like jewelry) so I think she looks fine, and fresh. Although, I my grandmother might throw a fit 🙂

For all that I’ve gone on about traditional looks, I have to say that I’m a bit unsure about the Kandyan osaria, despite the fact that my mother is a true Kandyan. For a long time, I thought that the tucking in at the waist broke the smooth, graceful line of a traditional Indian sari and made the wearer look stumpier, but now I’m starting to think that it just emphasizes the waist more (which I need).

Hmmm, what you girls (and boys) think? It’s a pretty bleh sari, but I love how she’s draped it! She looks pretty!

    • Pdaervo: The only other person I can think of seeing drape the saree like this was Chandrika K… and I don’t know if it’s the body type (are Sri Lankan women generally broad-boned?) but I do think draping it like this accentuates the stockiness of the frame. I love it tho that she’s flying her own flag! More power to trad dressing!

      • I don’t know, I’m very small framed 🙂

That’s what I’ve always thought, that only very thin, very tall women can pull off the shape. There are a lot of very thin young women in Sri Lanka (I didn’t get that gene) that look great in them. My mom loves the Kandyan drape, but she, in her youth, fell into the that same category.

At the same time, I also think that that the Indian drape with a heavier material on a broader woman tends to look a bit… blob-ish. I was thinking that maybe separating the body into two shapes would emphasize a figure more. I’m still unsure.

        • i loved this look when i first saw it while holidaying in srilanka. the little “frill” at the waist is such a tease… drawing attention to the waist and hips 🙂 in a most subtle fashion.
and pardon me for calling it a “frill” because i dont know the correct term for it.
this may not be the best drape of this style but i sure wud love to learn how to do it.

    • I disagree. This looks like a could-have-been beautiful drape meets the bollywood boob-show combination. I have several Sri Lankan friends that have draped the sari in the traditional manner with minimal jewellery, and the folds near the waist emphasize the beauty of this kind of drape even further. Importantly, the sari always covers the blouse up front. If anything, as an ambassador of her country, she should have draped it the right way.

      • yup ur right.. !! and more over, the saree chosen to wear kandyan is wrong here..

as for the boob show, yes.. thats where she has got it wrong.. it would have looked much neat and graceful if she wore it in the right way..

and the frill, which is called “neriya” over here.. its a lil too long on her osari =)

    • Are you sure this is cotton? Doesnt look like it from the pic with the smooth flowing material! This Kandyan sari reminds me of the Mundus that the kerala women wear.

  2. I love the Kandyan drape but somehow didn’t like her choice of the sari. It looks like something you’d wear at home and not at a formal occasion. She could have chosen a better material for the sari.

  3. It’s very nice to see a traditional Sri Lankan outfit. I hope she wears it outside of Colombo as well. She looks really young and fresh.

  4. I would have thought to wear earrings with this but considering her hair overs her ears anyway they would have been useless

  5. There are so many varieties in Sri lankan traditional wear.

This to me looks like one of those bollywood b grade movie neighbour role.

  6. nah…its not speaking to me.

  8. Us Sri Lankans like the simple plain look and usually tend to stay away from heavy jewelery. She is wearing the traditional Sinhala sari (aka Osariya aka Kandyan Sari). The sleeve of the blouse is usually a a bit poufy, unlike what Jacquline is wearing. I personally think the “frills” at the waist are a bit too long, its usually much shorter. Nonetheless, I think she looks adorable though…its simple, its Sri Lankan 🙂
