In Sabyasachi

As part of Jehangir Art Gallery’s diamond jubilee celebrations, Sabyasachi presented his collection and after which, Vidya Balan felicitated certain artists. All this wearing what else, but a Sabyasachi sari.

We are okay with Ms. Balan picking Sabyasachi for ninety-nine percent of all her public appearances. We really are. However, we do wish she’d stop dressing beyond her years (by which we don’t mean she should instead pick blingy saris and barely there blouses). We give her mad props for always choosing saris. Just wish her signature style didn’t always have to mean her having to channel her inner hot maami. Not that it’s a bad thing, just that it’d be a lot more appealing if she’d mix it up. No?

P.S: You may recall seeing a version of this sari on Shruthi Haasan here.

  1. Finally you spoke my mind!!!! She can stick to sarees …..not a problem ….look at rekha or sridevi carrying of the sarees so welll ….but her she is a sloppy dresser …she does such great injustice to those beautiful sabya sarees by wearing them sooo sloppily ……i dont even want to comment on her pose looks sooo awkward …. oh vidya why oh why do you have to do it to yourself and us !!!! The very sight of vidya balan makes me cringe these days . If you want to stick to a saree please first learn how to carry off a sari ……she is not reviving the saree …she is killing it !!!!!

      • Well, she looks terrible with her middle parting tight bun, the 3/4th blouse, dark nails, dark bindi. She looked good in Salaam-e-ishq, cameo in dum maaro dum, hand clasped pose!terrible. she has oodles of talent, why not hire a stylist who can make these masterpiece saris work! TIME TO CHANGE!

    • agree! Sarees usually enhance the beauty of most Indian women, but not if worn so sloppily. Dont ruin the saree with your sloppy draping, Viday!

    • I totally agree, she bores the hell out of those beautiful creations. Always the drape is off, her hair is off and the make-up is terrible. Sarees are great but they still need to be styled and worn well.

  2. Why is she doing this to herself? The long ill fitting blouses and the greased back hair needs to go. Mami style sari definitely looks beautiful but shes not doing it right

  3. I agree. But she looks gorgeous. If and when she does become a mummy, mami, aunty, nani, whatever, this particular saree will still be in fashion. So, she’s thinking long term, smart woman!

  4. she can even continue to look this way if only she could just tie her saree right!! this is her staple and how can she not know to put the pleats properly!!

  5. I have no complaints with this particular look. I think she looks fab.

But in general, i do wish she would choose other non-blingy, non-MM sarees since there is such a huge variety to choose from anyway. Afterall chennai does have several 5 floor shopping malls exclusively for sarees.

  6. she looks good in her sabya saris and tradish look but i totally agree. it’s aging her and she’s young and just needs to bring out some spunk!

  7. No kidding!! Not only that, its the same type of blouse, same drape, same make-up..its BORING BORING BORING. I did once hear her say that she was overly judged for bad styling when she just got into the movies so she sticks to safe clothes but god, this is not the 50s! Women of every kind can dress in fun clothes and she needn’t like a sassy aunty…or maami if you will.

  8. I always thought you girls are not afraid to call a spade a spade … wonder what took you so long to call her Maami, and also … why you sound so defensive :).

Sabya’s designs have started looking ordinary, thanks to her!

  9. If judging by only the above pics, I would say she still looks her age and the look is classic in this case. Having said that, this appearance doesn’t reflect a younger person’s enthusiasm for playing with clothes and energy. I can still imagine someone her age or younger wear this look well and not look old.

  10. I get your point, I really do. But this look here is beautiful and appropriate. Maybe not everywhere and all the time, but in this particular instance, it’s bang on. Love the flowers. Love the dignity with which she carries herself. And she isn’t matronly, unlike Ms. Rai Bachchan who dressed that way even before she conceived.

    • Frankly I don’t think she cares to be a fashionista. She’s an actress and as long as she comes out neat, clean and presentable, it seems to be all she’s aiming for. If she were interested in being a size zero, a style icon or anything else I’d critique this.

For another, I don’t get what one means by ‘dressing beyond her years’. This IS what the average mid-30s Indian woman looks like. Not all of them are stick thin, botoxed or interested in Western Wear. She wears sarees and salwar kameezes because that is what she is comfortable with in real life and in films she wears what the character demands. I for one am tired of how women are looking younger everyday. The pressure is insane and unreal and unfair. If I had a buck for every celeb in her 40-50s, botoxed and stuffed into a bandage dress….

      • And of course I agree with all else that OJ said. The saree is beautiful and perfectly appropriate for the event.

Plus, we might all claim that women of any size can wear anything, but you cannot deny that the saree is a very forgiving garment and dresses can often show up the worst of a flabby arm or untoned legs. This way she is comfy and free.

  11. I agree that she needs to wear her saris well and get rid of the long sleeve blouses but here she looks better than what she does normally to me. I like her here.

  12. This woman isnt going anywhere with this styling. I dont think she has a personal stylist either. I therefore, predict the same style for the next 10 yrs. Atleast its better than what she was throwing at us Pre Sabya days. Eek!

  13. While I love Vidya Balan as an actress I do think she is sartorially challenged – she’s not awful but nothing is very great either. And can I say I actively hate her blouses and she really needs to change from that style?

PS: Wonder who the other lady is, she looks a bit like me lol – it freaked me out a bit:)

  14. Ummmm…. Sabya’s designs have started looking ordinary thanks to Sabya. I think she looks decent here. Doesn’t scare the horses. From what I heard about the night in question, it was the hottest of the season and the venue wasn’t well-ventilated and people were visibly wilting, so kudos to her for plastering a smile on and keeping it there. As for people who keep commenting on awkward poses (here and on Poorna earlier), remember that these are live events where they are posing for a whole bank of photographers, not a photoshoot where you have one photographer to focus on and hours to do it right.

  15. I kind of disagree with this entire post. We all remember her horrific days of leggings and weird anarkalis and Heyy Babyy.

This is the best she’s looked in years. Sure we want to see everyone experiment with their look. Maybe she could try different sleeves on her blouses, experiment with unusual colour combinations… sure. But it’s also okay if she wants to stick to something that works for her. Which, you have to admit, it kinda does.

She’s 34. If she wants to showl her traditional Sabya-wearing, gajra-in-her-hair side, I don’t think we should so hostile. Not everyone has the stamina to be edgy and cool all the time like Sonam or Neha.

    • Agree completely. I don’t even see why people are calling her draping sloppy in this instance. She’s worn her sari pretty neatly this time around. And I for one would never get out of my comfort zone either-maybe age is catching up with me and making me lose my vanity (which I think is a welcome change).

      • Agree with Swati and sev…Vidya looks elegant and pretty, looks like a young 30-something woman as it should be, and her lovely smile makes up for any lack of perfect draping in this look. Btw, any East Coast folk out here? Hope Sandy didn’t hit bad. We are just about getting back on our feet…had to get my long overdue dose of HHC on…stay indoors and stay safe!

  16. i would say that she does great disservice to Sabya saris and has started to make it look so pedestrian. Speaking for myself, the longing i had to own a Sabya seems to have reduced over the past year or so and i’m inclined to believe its all because of brand ambassadors like her. i think Rani (thanks to a comparatively low set of public appearances) is actually the perfect ambassador for a brand like Sabyasachi. This babe is makes it lose its exclusivity tag.

  17. I totally agree! Atleast, short sleeves and pallu in steps once in a while…
With due respect to Sabyasachi and his creations, she needs to look beyond him once in a while if she wants to stick to sarees …

  18. Completely agree. I’m 34, heavier than Vidya Balan and not half as beautiful but I manage to do more with my wardrobe, and definitely look younger than her as well! If she wants to stick to sarees, would love to see her in a simple crepe with a sleeveless blouse and loose hair. Also, long fitted sleeveless kurtas with churidhars.

  19. Oh please. She is just an aunty who almost always wears sari with sloppy draping minus any hotness associated. You should have a look at real Maamis in Mylapore or Tnagar on how they drape their saris, ethnic jewelry and not much make up looking like frickin million bucks.

  20. Hmm… yes, she can dress in a way that doesn’t age her by 10-15 yrs. On the other hand, I don’t think she cares about featuring on these pages. She is not trying to be a fashionista. The post should be addressed to Sabyasachi. He needs to be more creative about the sarees/ dresses he is selecting for her, and maybe send a stylist along as well.

Chennai maamis/athais/akkas during the music season are a treat for sore eyes!! Great sarees and jewellery, esp in the dance circles.

  21. excuse me, but this woman looks amaaaazing! if she found alook that works for her and has worked for millions of women for hundreds of years why shouldn’t she just roll with it? Sridevi,Madhuri-hope you’re taking notes on how to look good in a sari
