GenNext Show: LFW Summer/Resort 2011

Focus shifted back to the Grand Hyatt Mumbai and the day started off with the GenNext show showcasing six labels. I’ll admit I wasn’t blown away by the presentations but keep in mind that most of the designers are just starting out and so it is the vision that counts.

Blank Spot By Shivaji Dutta
Using mustard as a base color and leather detailing to provide geometric shapes, Shivaji Dutta with his label Blank Spot wanted to remind us not to waste. There were skirts, shirts and even trousers given a second life as dresses. While the idea in itself was great, the big drawback of the collection was the base color. It wasn’t appealing.

DeuxA by Anna-Liza Ganguly and Anita Walia
Anna Liza and Anita maybe new to LFW but the duo who operate in Paris are not quite newcomers. Their label “deuxA” (get it?) presented “Samo Was Here” that used prints by American artist Jean Michel Basquiat as a backdrop accentuated by power shoulders. The beige vest and the final maxi paired with the deuxA logo neckpiece were the two that stood out.

Manas Dash
Manas Dash’s “Modern Tribe” used Pattachitra paintings of Orissa to create a collection that consisted mostly of separates in fabrics like silk, satin and lycra. If you feel that you see a bit of a Manish Arora influence in the animal patchwork blouse, we wouldn’t blame you because Manas has worked with Manish in the past. On the runway, pairing the prints together felt overwhelming but we can totally see ourselves wearing one piece with a solid and making it work.

I Know By Timsy and Siddartha
Timsy and Siddhartha presented a menswear only collection consisting of shirts with asymmetric button lines, pants with pouch pockets and waistcoats. Standout out pieces were definitely the shirts some of which I wouldn’t mind for myself.

Miriam Strehlau
Goan-based German designer Miriam Strehlau showcased in her collection colorful boho pieces featuring bandhani and batik prints on khadi, mul and cotton. While the jackets had potential, the dresses felt lackluster.

Deepti Pruthi
Tiers and frills dominated Deepti Pruthi’s collection “Complicated Simplicity” that was inspired by Chicago’s Aqua Tower, a building designed by a woman. The color palette stayed towards the light side consisting of whites, beiges and light greys. Some of the dresses were romantic and would be perfect for a summer evening.

  1. I got a Manish Arora vibe too when I saw Manas Dash’s collection! Like the first look reminds me of his carousel dress.

My favorite is DeuxA. Second comes Shivaji Dutta’s collection, because mustard is my favorite color. His collection was more Winter tough. Third is Deepti Pruthi.
