something accessory wise seems missing…otherwise the dress is pretty. But color seems dull.

Really? I personally don’t like the hair and would like the dress better without that one sleeve.

She did okay, could definitely have been so much more beautiful. The color could be so much better too.

Sta-unnnning!!! Love it, love it!! She is looking good and comfy and confident on the red carpet. She actually looks even better on TV.

gorgeous!! but did u guys notice that Taraji Henson wore the same gown that Freida wore to the BAFTAs….???

this is disappointing. i was hoping she’d wear a sari or something desi. after all, slumdog millionaire is about India, she is Indian, and this is such a great opportunity to represent your home country.

as for the dress, all that net is suffocating and the blue isn’t doing anything for her. Her smile, hair, and skin are definitely Oscar worthy though.

She looks great… but it would have been nice for her to have worn a sari or a dress by an indian designer. With the movie having this much exposure, it would have been nice for the cast to pay homage to India in some way.

while the dress is beautiful, i think it looks too overwhelming on Frieda’s tiny frame

yup its a stunning dress! but personally, i think her makeup could have been better. the dress is taking over her..

really nice color, but dont like the one sleeve look…it looks kinda messy frm the top too.

and she looks like she just woke up…shld have put a lil more makeup i think

I don’t care for the dress or the hair/makeup. The gown somehow reminds me of something Madhuri Dixit would wear in one of her item numbers from the 90’s

    Original is better

oh come on guys, this dress on anyone else would’ve been a wtheyyy. and it’s the same on freida. let’s try to be objective here, just a tad?

  15. Carol at | | Reply

That’s it? This is the best her stylist could do for the Oscars? The dress is blah. I have never been a fan of Galliano – an overrated designer. The hairstyle makes her look older but the makeup is perfect.

Hmmm… the hair really disappointed me. Looks like a bun that came loose and moved to one side. Gown was okay. I guess I was disappointed because I was sooo looking forward to what she would be wearing.
    It’s true… expectation is overkill.

I just saw her on TV and the E! hosts went all ga-ga. Personally, I don’t like the dress and makeup. The dress is too much and makeup is too less. The hair is interesting, but not great.
I agree with a lot of others who say she should have worn something Indian. Or at least something with a more Indian look.

oh no! this is bad. bad dress…she cudv done sooo much better wid all designers vying for her attention. she cudv worn a sari or a classier gown. this gown looks cheap and the net embroidery looks very chandni chowk.

She’s pretty herself, but she doesn’t wow here! I was expecting more, especially after such good styling for so many months. A bit disappointed. :-/

didnt lov it on the TV.. i thought her bafta pink oscar dela renta was the best.. i dont think the color does anything for her.. she cud have done a better color and a better outfit..

her make up is excellent, but she should have wore a richer and a brighter color on the red carpet…something like what actress Melissa Leo wore…a vibrant shade of brownish-golden!

She looks fabulous. I’m so glad she took a risk instead of all the boring beige and black and red others were wearing. The blue is just outstanding.

I’m glad she didn’t wear something Indian, personally.

Why on earth does the seam of that sleeve run along the outer arm rather than the inner arm?? Isn’t it better if the stitched seam is as discrete as possible???

  26. sanjana at | | Reply

I glad she didn’t go indian as well! :-).I think she looks stunning.her dress is befitting of the oscars. It would have been so much easier for her to play safe and wear boring black or beige and she didn’t ,i applaud her for that!

Anne Hathaway, Angelina, Marisa, all so elegant….Freida had the pick, but gosh, whatthehey on oscar nite….Amongst the bevy of beauties, freida was insipid. To stand out, I feel she should have had something different, something desi versionfied. It could have been a pardesi designer like Luca Luca who designed Padma Lakshmi’s wedding outfit if she did not want a desi designer. But oh, she was such a wallflower.

I love her dress… I personally dont like blue, but she looks good in it, and is set apart from the whites and golds and blacks… I think her makeup good have been a bit more ‘oomphy’, it’s looking like shes out on a regular day of press interviews… but maybe being as close to natural as possible works for her… I love the seam showing on the top of the arm… There is no rule that seams must not show, no rule that seams have to be inside the garment, i personally love cheeky stuff like that… I think Frieda herself is trying to posiion herself as a hollywood actress and not an ‘indian’ actress… thats why one doesnt really see her in indian clothes… Good for her, being up there with the very best… Let’s see what the future holds…

  38. Missy at | | Reply

and yes, I was relieved to see her in a gown and not something Indian :)

I do wish she’d gone with a more translucent lining….The detailing seems a bit lost…

All the same, it’s a beautiful colour , she’s a pretty girl and absolutely event-appropriate.

  41. Sudha at | | Reply

sad sad sad… nothing about this dress works for her. the dress by itself is not a good modification of Galliano’s original design. and why on earth couldn’t Frieda’s stylist CHECK whether it’s been worn before or not – Drew Barrymore wore a pale baby-blue version of this (minus the full sleeves & embroidery) at the Golden Globes!

  42. Joy at | | Reply

why is it that just because Freida is Indian, she is expected to wear an outfit by an indian designer? would it add to the pseudo patriotism that’s ravaging the country? As for the dress, the seam line is required else the required fit of the sleeve would have been practically impossible to achieve on a fabric like silk net. the only other alternative i can think of is a dart on the shoulder, and trust me that would’ve looked ugly.
all in all i love the garment, it almost borders on a vintage meets goth look, alongwith the contrasting key elements of a draped bodice and a crinoline-sque sweeping skirt.
    thumbs up!

Let us face it, to stand apart amongst true beauties, you need to be different. Alone, she looks pretty. Truly in our hearts we know that she is girl next door having the glow of youth, and being different from Hollywood. That is why she is the flavor of the month. Doing desi is not pseudo patriotism as someone said, it was an opportunity to do desi right. That way she truly would have stood out when she needed to. Even true beauties get outshadowed on Oscar nite because there are too many out there. It was a chance to stand out, and despite her differences, she did not.

didnt like the color on her or the beading detail….

She doesn’t have to do desi, and she’s under no obligation to ‘go Indian’ with her wardrobe. I think she looks great here, and you’re right- the pics don’t do justice to the colour.
I said this before, but here it is again.

“She’s under no obligation to walk around in saris and salwars just because she’s Indian, that’s analogous to saying Japanese girls should only wear the kimono whenever they have special events”

Just because she’s brown doesn’t obligate her to ‘be desi’. And why is SHE being targeted anyway? Anil Kapoor is a much bigger movie star, why doen’t someone demand that he wear a dhoti?

  52. N at | | Reply

And FTW, what about this girl does not make her a ‘true beauty’? She’s gorgeous, not because of her clothes or makeup, but she has fabulous bone structure and skin- haters are just jealous.

  53. sim at | | Reply

Ok, she didn’t have to wear something indian but she could have worn something indian inspired, like a dress that J-Lo wore once and Nicole Kiddman wore, but not as bad as Aish Bachan would have faired.

  54. sim at | | Reply

To “N” Japanese dont’ wear thier outfit other than for only some ceremonies but Indians wear saris and Salwar Kameez in thier everday life and I think they are so beautiful as well, better than any dress i spoted. She doesn’t have to but its like givin up on something better just to fit in. With the exception SRK and Sanjay Dutt most men look better in suit so they shold stick with that. Its just a matter of what would have looked better not that she has to wear Indian

  57. preeths at | | Reply

she was clearly overshadowed at the oscars
dowdy is the nicest word i can describe this gown…
or maybe its something to do with her personality as i always felt she fared better in short dresses and peeptoes over gowns (cip…baftas, golden globes and oscars.. none of the 3 gowns on her had the WOW factor)

i couldnt take my eyes off the kids and dont remember even seein freida on stage

  58. N at | | Reply

    Dear ‘sim’
Not all Indian girls wear saris and salwars in their everyday lives, especially in Mumbai, where Freida is from. And as for the question of what looks better, maybe she’s just more comfortable in a dress? Besides, she looks good in them- as the saying goes, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. The whole world knows she’s Indian, no need for her to reinforce it or pander to anyone’s idea of what she should wear.

  59. Nina at | | Reply

Her look..hair..clothes, etc did nothing for me..

  60. sim at | | Reply

“N” neither do I wear Saris and salwar Kameez but if I had the designers on my fingertips I would get something really nice designed for myself just something indian inspired that would suit her better not necesarily wear a sari or lehenga but something what would have been one look at her and everyone would be like “wow”
She didn’t have that going for me, she looks much better in short dresses that she has been wearing to other events, at the oscars i just watned to her to be the “it” girl.

  61. suchi at | | Reply

sorry the dress did not work for me. looks much better her in the pics than on Tv. blue was a bit dull.

  62. nefertiti at | | Reply

The dress is overwhelming on her, like many have mentioned before. This is for someone like Kidman (taller). It does not flattering for someone Freida’s height. Also did not like her jewellry. If you cover her face, the dress doesn’t look that great at all, but she did her best carrying it off.

  63. N at | | Reply

I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree then, I was pretty wowed by this dress- the sleeve detail really made it noticeable, and the colour works beautifully with her skin (it was prettier on TV). And on a day when half the crowd seemed to be in strapless dresses, it stood out- it’s not the typical ‘flash-cleavage’ kind of dress so many starlets go for, I like it for being a bit demure.

Also, she’s worn drapey dresses a lot, which I thought were a subtle nod to the sari- even the single sleeve in this case (which was the left sleeve) reminded me of a sari silhouette at first.
As for the short dresses bit…I personally think they suit her better (agree with you there) because she’s young and has nice legs, but she carries herself well so long gowns do look pretty good on her too. Besides, maybe she doesn’t have enough clout to get something specially made just yet- most people just pick stuff out of existing gowns anyway.

  64. Vishakha at | | Reply

the color does nothing for her…i expected better :(

  65. dfw at | | Reply

    UGH! Hate it!
Although, the close-up shots do look a teensy bit better than it did on tv… I was hoping for some brighter color. :/

  66. herdisnot at | | Reply

@N I agree she does not have to be a forced desi..but she is here in hollywood not because she is american, but Indian. That being said, let us pick apart the galliano gown. It would have worked for Linda Evans in her prime. It has a tacky, netty look, and the style is so eighties. If you decide to go western, then Anne Hathaway scored with her Armani prive, the sequins to paillette, her carriage, accessories.. lovely. Next was the gown that Marisa wore, my gosh, that pleated number was poetry. Angelina kept it simple, and wore those emerald beauties, a real popper. These were undoubtedly superlative. Alciia Keys’ outfit would have worked on Freida, next time she could try that color.

I have to disagree with folks who call Freida a hollywood star — one movie does not make one a star! We dont think of Irfaan or Anil as Hollywood stars but they were in the same movie. As for doing something Desi — it is not required, but some outlets are suggesting this blue fluff is sari-inspired because it is one armed. Personally, I hate it — the embroidery on the sleeves makes me think of spiders crawling up her arms. As for blue being a new color choice — when I switched on the tv, I saw three women in this hue in quick succession — Queen latifa, witherspoon and frieda. Latifa’s dress was very similar to frieda’s.

i am soooo glad she did not wear an indian designer to the oscars. any indian designer would have gotten so caught up in the fact that they were dressing someone for the oscars that they would have produced a christmas tree…every bauble, sequin, zardozi bit they could have found would have been on an overworked fishtail gown with a bustier top…or an equally overworked sari with a bra top.

@mj: AMEN! Unless it was someone like Rajesh Pratap Singh, whom I think is a bit minimalist for a red carpet. And this girl’s stylist seems to know what her strengths are and works around them- good for him (and her, too).
