A Separate(s) Story

Is it a plane? A bird? No, just Ms. Padukone messing with us! Wearing a Forever 21 tee with super-distressed Zara denims, Dior shades and Louboutins, Deepika promoted an upcoming movie. Unfortunately for the actor, the Payal Khandwala cape didn’t come with its own set of superpowers, the one where you could pair it with absolutely anything and it’d fly. A pair of jeans that distressed ought to be reserved for play, not work; such a downer!

  1. Good lord! What is it with Deepika and distressed denims? She and her stylist(s) seem to think that its Ok to wear the most ugly-a** pair of denims as long as you “dress them up” by pairing them with sky high heels .
Seriously, No! Those denims still look ugly and mismatched.

  2. I actually love this look. The cape looks great and adds an interesting touch to her casual look. The hair and make-up look great too-DP looks awesome

  3. Why did she stuff that white fabric patch on the top most distress part? Looks really odd, if it needed to be covered the stylist should have done a better job by patching from the inside with blue denim.

  4. Actually the distressed denims and the tee with those shoes would have been just fine. I like the hair too. The cape or is it a bedspread? lol is the one which has made the whole look absurd. But will this look get the same kind of comment if only the wearer was Sonam, I think not, it would have been called super fun outfit 😛

    • Am not driven to respond to certain type of comments usually but every now and then, it gets my goat. It really does.

What is with this constant “if it were Sonam…” comments from some of you? Have you realized how many looks we’ve faulted in the recent times? Here-

Maybe you’d be better off asking if we’d comment the same way if Neha Dhupia was wearing it. Or Vidya Balan. Or maybe Huma or even Esha Gupta. All these comments reflect more of your biases than ours.

No, we don’t get paid by publicists or PR peeps or the Kapoor sisters. Only revenue comes from advertising. Which is why we still work our asses off and hold down day jobs. Plus, it’s fashion. No two people are going to feel the same way.

I love the commenters and the comments. But this constant bashing every time we voice an opinion gets exhausting. Payal and I have always maintained we’ll blog till we find it fun, till we can stay passionate about it. This is a space for us to voice our take and for each one of you to voice yours. Surely we can each have our say without tearing each other and the celeb (Sonam Kapoor or not) down?

Let’s have fun with fashion, with the blog, with it all! Please.

And should my comment get misconstrued, let me reiterate… Both Payal and I love the community we’ve built with the commenters, both the old, new and regulars. And like the comment policy in place to protect the celebs, perhaps we can extend the same courtesy to each other too and play (somewhat) nice?

      • Hi Priyanka, hope you and Payal aren’t thinking of packing it in – please don’t, you’ll leave a lot of readers bereft!!
On this blog as in life, some people just don’t know when to leave a thing alone. Thankfully they are few and far between. Ignore and rock on!!

      • I can understand it must get exhausting but there is no need either to get so worked up or even to justify your opinion which you’re jolly well entitled to- I’m sure there are naysayers everywhere even in the ‘day jobs you both hold down’ – and yes the blog is a success because of your insightful comments and initiative – but also because of the variety of comments from a cross section of society. Some more acceptable than others – but it’s all part of what makes it interesting . Whether or not you are also doing day jobs or slogging has nothing to do with finding time for what is clearly a passion right.. The former sounds rather martyr like which is not fun!! Just carry on- you have enough supporters and it’s usually a very fun interface. All best.

        • Best comment. I don’t see the need to even prove themselves, lol, we all know that it is their blog and many of us read it piously even comment every day. I have been reading them from the time where they have had issues with distressed denims now to have overcome it and from the time where they have used terms like “bai” to being more “matured -grownup” – neutral in their comments on celebs (this was their comment on one of the earlier threads not mine, just in case before the claws come out. :P). I like the way they ID anything from clothes to shoes and all that is in between and that is what I check the site for. Like you said, the very best to them. 😀

      • C’mon guys.. Didn’t think you would ever take these comments personal.
It sounds like they know you and are making personal comments, but they do not.
The same people make awfully terrible personal comments on celebrities they’ve never met.

And you know what? *Even if* you did have sub-conscious preferences and treated someone with kid-gloves and others harshly, it’s your site. Justifying yourselves will serve no purpose!
If anyone has a problem, all they have to do is to NOT VISIT the site. And they choose to come back! Take that compliment and move on.

Pls try not to get worked up, carry on your passion, and help us lesser fashion-educated people along will ya? 😛
I can count on one hand (and maybe two fingers) how many designers I knew of or cared for before I visited these pages.

        • That said, I sincerely hope people stop bringing Sonam and Kangana into every single conversation, even when there’s nothing remotely pointing to them.

How people expect every person featured here to be held to the same rulebook is beyond me. It’s different people with different sensibilities, wearing different clothes. The comments really should go by what’s expected of them based on their style, not everyone else’s. Never understood when people said so-n-so is “copying” so-n-so.
Sounds so petty and immature, even if celebs are doing it.

      • Priyanka, I just read your long comment. I think it is one of the first time I even drew a comparison like that and I didn’t mean you ladies, I was saying it generally to all those commentin . I don’t even go martyr for any of the silly- hate comments over my favorites who are featured on the blog. You probably wanted to take it out on other haters who come here just to bash you all the time and this went on to grind your gears. lol. And I always in fact said it is your blog and it is your opinion when people have left hate comments. I don’t have the time, otherwise I would have even linked up all those comments. Peace out.
And Neharika, really? Except the times when Sonam looks like she was doing out clown thingy on full swing I never comment on her posts itself. Just because you like her , don’t just start saying random absurd things. You can also take your hate elsewhere where probably it makes more damn friggin’ sense.

      • Too bad in the name of trying to prove a point you sound like Mini Mathur, Priyanka . The last sentence of yours of being nice & civil is completely contradicting to your outburst in the first para. The comments which are obviously making you rage or will make the celebrities mad are probably moderated, so why the big fuss? Chill bro.

  5. WTH…. just when we were getting over her distressed starry jumpsuit…. she dresses up in an even uglier pair of distressed (read torn/tattered) denims and those horrible shoes….! No DP…. not again…!

  6. I think the real problem here are the jeans – the distressing is too much! Pair this with another pair of jeans or trousers and I think the look would have worked. I loved the necklaces.

  7. There must be something terrible wrong with me because I’m living the look. Dp looks sassy and the cape is very dramatic yet casual. Why should all work clothes look red carpet worthy?? This is a super hip look. For those of you thinking where her super power went.. Look harder. It’s staring you in the face:))

  8. I thought that this was the same outfit as the one HHC covered earlier. She threw the cape on. That’s what I got from Instagram at least, I think.

  9. If you check out the video from the event, she actually looks extremely stylish and lovely. Even here I don’t see what the problem is- as long as someone is carrying off an outfit – individual tastes differ of course, for I remember you guys praising Mira’s nightie-lehenga just in the post above this one 😛

I think they are going for an in-character look- so hipster-hippie. I would wear this.

  10. @PrettyChic that white patch on ‘the too most distress’ part is just the pocket showing through, they did not patch it up. Distress jeans that have such extensive tears that high up usual end up showing the pocket in a similar manner

  11. When u overdo just to look diffrent. When denim is distressed its already speaking loud ,subtle the look, we don’t have stylist and we never think of styling like this overdose of overdo. I find her knee poping out is looking super odd ,so does the pockets. Cape has lost its glory 🙁 you have chosen to style comfy super chick in Tamasha Deepika.please dont promote your stylish movie stepping out like this..

  12. I prefer this over the dolled up Sabyasachi look at the trailer launch. Would have liked less distressed jeans- but am digging the cape- and she looks like she’s having fun….

  14. Am the only one here that like this look? I think it kinds of show the spirit of the actor herself – free spirited and also I feel it relates to the character of the movie. And no! these distressed jeans are not a downer..far from that!

  15. Woah! I find myself in the minority. I love this look. The distressed denims ar finally just right. The cape adds some drama and style, and those shoes are sexy as hell!!

  16. Deepika has her “phases” or maybe her stylist does… There was the Nude peep-toe pumps phase, the Gold mirrored pumps phase, the oxblood color phase and now the distressed (or rather I-got-wonky-with-a-pair-of-shears) jeans phase. She will get over it guys, don’t worry 😛

  17. I’m just not able to take any more of Deepika’s centre – parted looks.. I dont know why.. I just can’t stand them anymore.
Gives her face such a weird, over-done, framed look (I know I’m not making sense).
Some always seems off about her these days, and sometimes it’s the eye makeup, but there’s always THAT hair.
