Of Premieres

At the premiere of Pink in Delhi, Andrea represented her Meghalaya roots by wearing a Dhara, a dressy version of the Jainsem. I would’ve preferred an ankle-strap minimalist sandal here to balance out all that fabric but that was just a minor gripe.

Loved her for picking this!

    • Dear Sara,

You definitely need to go in for a sensitivity 101 course! 🙂 This beautiful woman is from a very overlooked part of India and is wearing the traditional outfit of her tribe (Khasi, if I’m not wrong) with pride and elan. It is NOT a saree. A Dhara or Jainsem is a handwoven shawl draped over another garment in a particular way. That “Ewwwwwww” was totally uncalled for!

      Peace and sunshine!

    • Wow, the ignorance and the insensitivity.
The very first sentence of the post said that she is wearing a Dhara/ Janisem, why would you then think she is wearing a saree. Even if you did not know what Jainsem is, it is not too difficult to Google it, is it? And my god, your reaction is going to be “Ewwwwww” to a traditional outfit that represents a heritage/culture? You may not like an outfit, and that is okay. I, for example is not a fan of lehanga cholis, and would never wear them myself, but wouldn’t berate people who do. saying “ewwwwww” is just not classy.

    • It would have been nice to educate yourself on an outfit/fabric before declaring it “ewww” worthy. This is the traditional outfit of the Khasi polulation. Saree/salwar kameez/ghagra choli is not worn in every state of India.
And people wonder why people from the North Eastern states feel discriminated against!! Andrea looks fantastic

    • Ignorance is not someone’s fault(not a bliss in this case either). Its kinda wierd to start a SaRa bashing session here eh!! It could just be an honest mistake? Maybe she didn’t read the post, commented her opinion on visual only? India is so multi cultural, it’s impossible for anyone to know it all. All cultures are awesome n so are their traditions, but I’m sure none of us Are know it alls.. Give some benefit of doubt people.. We have enough politicians to do this stuff.. At risk of being bashed – don’t be over sensitive

I think she looks gorgeous.. Did a great job in the movie.. Reminded me of my delhi single days.. Brought back stuff, that I totally wanted to forget..

  2. Just got back from the movie and it was brilliant . Love this individual choice in dressing up . Almost in cohorts with the importance of an individual’s choice in the movie . A strong and elegant fashion take .

  3. Such a confident, lovely young lady. I love that she chose to wear the dhara. A Khasi friend of my brother, send my mother a dhara as a ‘thank you’ for being a wonderful hostess during his stay our home. They take immense pride in their culture and I can see that in Andrea. I would rate this look 100/100.

  4. P&P, thank you for not approving my previous comment. I feel almost ashamed to have not read what you wrote in the post. I did not register that this is a traditional outfit. My apologies.

  5. This is the first I’m hearing of Andrea Tariang and I hope there will be many, many more such sightings – what a beautiful woman in a beautiful outfit! Besides the fact that it’s such a well put together look in and of itself, I do think she’s representing a region of our country that is woefully underrepresented in the mainstream media and so this kind of showcasing is great and we need more. Having lived in different parts of the North East for some years – Assam, Manipur, Mizoram – I have seen how beautiful are the people, the landscapes, the traditional weaves, the culture…this is true with almost any part of a diverse and culturally rich country like India, but I do wish these regions were better represented on the whole.
