At Cannes: In Sabyasachi

Comment image 192

OMG! I think I just died and went to heaven! All my (and probably yours too) prayers were answered when Aishwarya walked the red carpet wearing this gorgeous Sabyasachi sari to the premiere of “Outrage”. The sari is perfect for the night as the details on it shimmer even more with the camera flashes.

Now, some of you may not like that she kept the neck bare and the make-up neutral but I love it. The sari should be the center of attention and it is.

Love it!

  1. love the sari and don’t her eyes look amazing. love the bare neck too as it looks classy here. not sure about the middle parting.

    • Agree, NOT digging the middle parting at all…..seems like as if the hair is stuck to her scalp…but kudos to her for dishing out a new look….

      Reply
      • Yeah i think so. I think she looked nicer in some award ceremony (think IFA) 2 yrs back with a Sabyasachi and no parting bun.

but this is the best appearance ! They look good together !

        Reply
        • The parting spoils it all for me. No longer have I started to see the sari than I am drawn to the horrid parting. Like Kasthuri suggests, hair pulled back, without parting, into a bun would’ve taken her up on 10.
          Sigh.

  2. I love it! Finally a saree! She looks great in gowns, but this one is just perfect! Way to go Ash, they make such a cute couple… Is it me or does her eye makeup look a little odd? Ususlly her eyes look so good, I try and copy the makeup! Or maybe it’s there hair I’m not sure.. hmmmm
I don’t mind the bare neck, it gives most attention to the saree!

    • lol yeah I thought the same..it looks like the eye lashes are stuck to the skin above and below the eyes..LOL! and dont like the middle parting either..her hair looks like its sticking to the scalp…but other than that..boy does the sari look AWESOME!

allow me to predict the critics:
    1. HAWWW the inside of her sari border is shwoing.
    2. chhi chhi, look at that bindi
    3. she is looking fake/tired/artificial (or insert any pejorative adjective of choice, that does not need to be explained)
    4. she is smiling too much/ too little.
    5. she looks like a 36 year old woman

i agree…. we seem to be so harsh on aishwarya and vidya balan. these people are afterall people and no amount of make-up/science/surgery etc can fight mother nature and her pull. lets celebrate the fact that a woman is looking like a woman and not a stick doll… and that she’s a healthy role model to all the other young woman out there who are struggling with their body images.
the “most beautiful woman” in the world is NOT a size-0

      Reply
      • I have to disagree to her being a healthy role model. As much as size 0 is unhealthy so is the lack of exercise. Please note I am not criticizing Ash here. It’s her decision whether to exercise or not but it’ll be unfair and dangerous to tomtom that as desirable. Exercise and physical fitness is a must not to look young or whatever but to stay healthy(here healthy refers to possessing good health). That apart of course no woman can be the “most beautiful woman” in the world, first since beauty is subjective and second since it’s impossible for anyone to have met every living woman. All said and done, she is a beautiful woman but probably not the healthiest role model.

          • exercise is a must for everyone.it improves ur circulation, and many others which i dont feel like explaning .However, Ash is not overeight! she has a normal and healthy weight . yes she looks old but hey she 38!!!! do u think u gonna look that good at that age? i can only hope. this is from a person who hates to see an ounce of fat in her body and always think about the “calories” and healthiness of a food before eating it.im a science major so i do nw what im takin about

            Reply
          • Of course you don’t need to hit the gym to exercise. If she says she does yoga, she obviously does but yoga stretches and tones your body which hers isn’t. My assumption which may not be right is that she doesn’t follow a strict routine or she hasn’t been doing it for long. I have been doing yoga for the past 12 years so I can spot someone who does yoga regularly. Her body language and posture too isn’t that of a yogi. And no I don’t think she looks old. To consider a woman over 30 old is very sexist and regressive. My objection is only to hail her as a role model for healthy lifestyle.

      • we are all human and aging is a natural process.. that said, we get to see ordinary women of aishwarya’s age who can pass of as being in their late 20s.

For the resources that she has at her disposal (not to mention the most-beautiful-woman tag), Aishwarya not only looks her age but sometimes even comes across as looking older than her 36 years!! she seems to have aged a little too fast…. (or may be it is the choice of clothes/makeup that is to blame)…

        Reply
      • Sometimes it’s not just about being mean. Ash was stunning (and slender) when she was in her twenties, she looks nice now but doesn’t look that breathtakingly beautiful or slender. So people notice. Other women look better when older….it all depends. It’s just an observation at the end of the day, doesn’t mean it’s in any way vicious. And at the same time props to her for not succumbing to desperate steps to look the same, she has a grace and dignity about her which will always serve her well.

The sari-not doing it for me. They honestly need to get over embroidery and glitter which is by now so overused and stale and unimaginative and reinvent the sari again – I don’t know maybe bold colours and weaves instead of over egging it.

P&P, guess its hard to keep up with the volume and appreciate your efforts but comments take so long to apepar that I lose track 🙁

        Reply
        • S: Ash doesnt excersize?? Just because she doesnt have a bikini model body, it does not mean she doesnt excersize. If anyone is trying to say that she looks unhealthly over-wieght they are being RIDICULOUS.

She looks healthy, and refreshingly true to the curvy body type of most Indian women. She might not be super-fit but in no way is she obese or anything unhealthy like that.

Also, Im NOT trying to be snarky, but seriously , where do you live and what kind of impossibly fit people are you surrounded by that you find Ash an unhealthy role model?

AM, its not about being mean or vicious, its about the effect that thousands of comments like this (calling a perfectly normal woman, who might have put on some wieght unhealthy/ flabby/ fat) have on young women. To expect every women, especially to be extremely slender and perfectly toned is just unrealistic. And when young girls hear comments like this all around them, it is going to have an impact and they are going to grow up with a negative and unrealistic image of their bodies.

          Reply
          • CM…nothing wrong with young girls growing up with hearing that having a fantastically healthy and toned body is great and highly attractive, if there isnt the right message to pass along then what is? ‘its ok for you to not have a good and healthy body?’ Im sure a lot of people would agree with that..but we need to remember we are talking about a celebrity here….people pay to watch them on screen..their only job is to look good (and act- if you are an actress too), so expecting them to look good and healthy..is a very basic requirement. Its like telling a photographer..its ok if your pictures are not taken well and dont look good…or a choreographer that its ok for you to not dance well …..just the nature of professions….

            Reply
          • CM, now you disappoint me. You are one of the few who consistently encourage people here not to post personal and nasty comments on celebs and that I appreciate about you. Yet you post personal comments about visitors here, that too shouldn’t be admissible by the same yard stick. Agree?

I have never said she is obese(and she is far from being obese) and I have also categorically mentioned that it’s her choice if she wants a toned body or not or it might not be possible with her hectic schedule. But when you see Ash’s body, she was never toned. When you exercise an hour 4 days a week over time your body is bound to get toned because you work your muscles. When you are toned, you don’t store as much fat in your body. You can be slim but have a high BFI, which again isn’t healthy. All this has nothing to do with your body type – think JLO. *you is for womankind*

I live in the land of the obese but I am well toned at 30 as is the better half. Some friends are and some ain’t but then I don’t go around making friends based on their BFI. I admire Ash for how she protects her personal life, she would be an ideal role model for young girls who post almost everything on fb. But not for attaining a healthy body. I will stick to that. Healthy isn’t skinny, fat, flabby or anything that lies in between – it lies in maintaining a healthy BMI and BFI through diet and exercise.

PnP, sorry for digressing but this is something very important to me.

Also I hate her make up you can actually see where the concealer ends in the close ups.

          Reply
          • Err…AM, my whole point IS that Aishwarya looks healthy 🙂 not bikini-model-fit, but healthy (as opposed to seriously overwieght/ anorexic, which would be unhealthy). And sending out messages to young girls that you are flabby/ unhealthy when you look like Aish and that you HAVE to be bikini-model-fit is just wrong.

I’m really sorry if I upset you, I was not trying to be nasty. I knew it might come off sounding snarky, which is why I specifically said that I wasnt being snarky. It was just an honest question, because if you lived in Japan or something the comment would have made sense to me. I maintain that I still find it ridiculous if people think that Ash has an unhealthy body, that is NOTHING personal against you, just a difference in opinion.

Also, I know you never said she was obese, I was just saying that she is healthy because she is NOT obese or seriously overwieght, just a little curvy. Again, sorry that I upset you. I wasnt trying to get personal, just protesting against a type of comment that Ive seen often Ash posts and that irked me. Still, I definetely see your point, even if I cant bring myself to agree with it

          Reply
          • CM, thanks for a healthy debate and I am glad we can gracefully agree to disagree. Here I guess our definition of curvy varies. I would love to write more but then that’d be digressing too far from the original post by Payal and abusing the freedom pnp has given us here.

            Reply
          • First apologies for a long comment.

CM, I am – ahem – a larger person who exercises spottily. My point is therefore not that one should be size zero neither am I sending out any message. Actually, the whole size debate has got politicised. Either people claim fat people are unhealthy or people decry size apartheid (with size zeros being the white ideal of course). I honestly have no truck with either, I find them both silly positions. There are lot of thin girls I find pretty but I think its underestimating the intelligence of women to think that I for e.g. lie awake tortured that I am not one. The whole “influencing” the young ones is all so hyped up – young women have lots of influences and not all of them centre on beauty. At any given period there are also notions of beauty that young women have to negotiate (in India, being thin and dark in the past for e.g.) and they survive it quite OK.

Notions of ideal beauty keep changing. At the moment, its waif like. This too will change for humans like change. But in our real lives, these have little impact. My partner is with me for me and is certainly not pining for me to reduce a few sizes. Neither am I.

In all the size wars, normal modes of comparison get attacked and there is heavy moralising on any position. That was my point. Yes Aishwarya is older and looks heavier. So big deal if its pointed out (I also pointed out her grace), are observations also to be censored? I find people who get riled up about this are probably approaching it with their own neuroses (same with the behenji debate) rather than looking at it as standard human behaviour (even if you don’t verbalise it you think it). All I can say is be happy with what you are, appreciate those who are different and don’t forget that digs and comparisons keep us all grounded.

            Reply
          • Also S, I have to disagree with you. Being fat in itself is not unhealthy. Disease is a complicated thing, there are many factors at play. People who exercise are known to fall ill for e.g. – it’s sort of wanting to be in control that makes us believe that if we do x, y, z it’s all fine. But the body is far more complex.

            Reply
          • AM, I have to disagree. Being overweight is unhealthy because then you are at greater risk of getting diabetes, cardiac problems, knee and ankle pain among many other diseases. Being toned may not necessarily protect you from these diseases but the risks are reduced. It’s like smoking – it increases the risks of cancer and stroke but that doesn’t mean non-smokers can’t have lungs cancer/stroke. Any physician will agree that moderate exercise and a balanced healthy diet is the key to good health. When you are young and don’t exercise, you may not see much difference but with age as metabolism slows, fat starts piling on.

So that my comments are not misconstrued, I’d like to add here you stands for humankind and no single person.

          • AM,
I have to disagree, women (and men) are definitely influenced by the media and popular opinion. It’s pretty much proven, I could explain, but then things would get too scientific and like S said, digress way too much from the topic of this blog.

And given the number of cases of anorexia, bulemia etc, I think its pretty obvious that its not hyped up. But again, this is digressing too far from the original topic of the post so can we just agree to disagree? Also, I could be baised because I have an annoyingly stick-like body and I would KILL for curves like Ash’s 🙂

  10. The sari looks great but Ash is not doing it for me lately. Something about her face recently looks so off. Maybe it’s just exhaustion or bad make-up? She looks unnaturally pale here as if she’s using the wrong color foundation. Perhaps it’s just age finally showing.

Neck down she looks great, neck up the worst she has looked in a long time, awful make-up that drains her out, even the heavy eye make-up is not working due to the awful ironed down hair.
Seriously she needs to stop the ironed down partition hair look, the last 2 times she did it , same bad result.
Raavan music launch and some party she went to after she recovered from illness few months back, both times hair was out, but same bad result.

It’s simply stunning. Just because some blingy saris are tacky, doesn’t mean all saris with work and such on them have to be banished from the face of the earth – it all depends on how’s it done. And this is done superbly. Contrary to some people’s opinions, I don’t think her make up is bad … I think it’s the hair that makes her face look off. In my opinion, it would have been A LOT better if her hair wasn’t as tightly pulled down – the middle part DOES suit her very well, but it should have been way more relaxed and loose, not flat at all. That would have totally changed the way her face looks to us.

also, what happened to opaque sarees, with a heavy weft? WHAT IS with this transparent saree trend? having said that, this saree is certainly not too bad.

the best thing about this look, the bindi:-)

  45. OMG i totally loved the saree but yeah even i am not sure about this middle parting….
I have noticed something about this couple that 4th pose (looking @ each other) is it their all time favorite.. 🙂

  46. Stunning saree and make – up. But hair, no. SOmething like a loose bun that Deepika had worn the previous day would have gone a long way

  47. She is looking great in all photos except the 2nd and the last one-the second one is ghastly. I prefer the lack of jewllery. Having said that she has not yet topped the filfare awards, black Sabya saree look yet. Something is off abt the eye make up as well, too much mascara

  48. LOVE LOVE LOVEEEEE the sari … HATEEE the hair.. Its a good thing she went for the bun but i would’ve loved to see her in a not so tight my hair hurts kinda bun… its looking too flat.. i think she should have gone for the bun she put when she attended the 2009 Filmfare Awards in another drool worthy Sabyasachi sari … remember !!!

  50. the saree is nothing fantastic. well its heavy, but its nothing different. i think vidya wears the best sabyasachis.i also like a middle part on Ash, but i think she’s pulled it too tight.
i’ll go with someone up there who said Ash looks her age of about 37 or so.. and that is not a bad thing. she’s a beautiful woman, not a slip of a girl and what the heck is wrong with looking it?
also – AB looks scruffy all the time. i think its time he cleaned up a bit.

  51. i think the clear winner of this look is SABYA! i loove him…and by the time i can afford him, i will be too old to look good in his saris…sigh. this sari reminds me of something else she had worn for an awards function, also a sabya. she looks like herself, spot on features and pretty but yes, the 40 (its not 36 guys, more 39) is showing! as for him, i’ve never quite liked him..

  52. p.s: also, abhi looked like he was fooling around with Ash’s kajal/mascara before they stepped onto the red carpet 😉

  53. thank god her sari is perfectly worn! yaaaaay! she looks nice, but am not liking the hair or the thick makeup.

i’m happy for all the aish fans who were dying for her to look good at cannes 🙂

  54. oh when i haerd she wore a sabyasachi creation i was soo excited….i thought IT would be that one knockout look that i was waiting from her….but that was not to be…

the saree is beautiful, love the green choli, completely approve of the less jewellery…..then what is it??why does it fall short of wow??…the hair maybe….pulled too tight n flat…n also something about the make up…not too sure about the choice of lip colour….the close up pics are really not flattering…

but ill keep waiting…..the ravaana premiere look should be a killer…fingers crossed

  57. The saree is gorgeous, but what is it with that parting bun!! she looks like a grandmother! – she only needed greying hair and she would look like one of those wigs they use in starplus soaps!! the make up is also horrendous unbeleivable that a make up artist did that?! her face looks whiter than her body her under eye circles are covered in a weird yellow, and the blush is way too harsh! A DISASTER! apart from the saree she looks terrible – disappointing that she goes to represent indian beauty because she has the face but she has been no style what so ever!

  61. When she has chose to wear a saree she should have also worn some accessories that match….according to me she would have looked much better with a necklace that suits the saree and a long ear ring. The make up also is not that impressive this time……Its a disappointment for me….

  64. exquisite saree… work of art. the dark green of the jungle against the beautiful flower matches the feeling of the jungles of Ravan..

    Aishwarya looks stunning!!
THIS IS HER BEST CANNES OUTING YET… her best.
and proof positive that the ancient garment, the saree, creates a work of art on a form.

  65. Wowza – hot hot hot all the way. I cant decide about the make up as she looks ghostly in the second pic – but else where she just looks fab!!

  66. I’d have personally preferred some light brown lipstick rather than the nude lips and a little looser hairstyle than this tightly bound bun! But therez NEVER going to be a look that makes everyone happy. So kudos to them for looking SO great.

  67. Great to see Aish in a sari at Cannes. I don’t care much for the sari itself or her hair and make-up (check out the 2nd and 3rd pics…that’s *scary*). But for me it’s enough that she’s wearing what suits her the most.

I find the sari itself rather dull. Call me old-fashioned but I’ll take Aishwarya’s mom’s saris this year at Cannes over this one any day – hers are fab (all silk ones I believe: a brown-golden one, a white one and the deep green one she’s wearing at this event) – do check them out if you can. A few years ago I might even have liked this Sabya creation, but now after all those Manish Malhotra years and general overdose of Hindi films I have become so bored with seeing these blingy saris all the time; I can’t help but associate them with the words ‘cheap’, ‘tacky’ and ‘gaudy’. This Sabya one is not as tacky as some Manish Malhotra creations, but somehow I am underwhelmed by it. It would be nice to see a bit of creativity and innovation; after a while the ‘curly-lines-with-flowers-on-every-turn’ becomes boring. Why would anyone pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for this tat?

  68. I’m no aishwariya fan but I have to admit shes looking great here, the saree is DIVINE!! I don’t see why people make such a fuss about her makeup and hair – the smokey eyes are beautiful and the pale lipstick is nice with the whole look, she looks fresh and modern. Those people who go on about anyone wearing more than a little lipgloss are probabley the types who make no effort with their appearance – certainly not the types anyone would want to take any style tips from!!

  69. I’m beginning to believe that Sabya’s smug proclamations about upholding Indian heritage was a convenient excuse for getting his hands on cheap fabrics that he could patchwork in the early days.

Never was a fan of his stuff, quite frankly. There, I said it.

  72. I feel like somehow she has lost the charm in the recent times. She is still beautiful, no doubt about it but the dressing sense or makeup is making her look scary(referring to the 2nd pic).

  74. She looks good thanks to Abhishek. She made a wise calculated choice this woman. Blah–eyes, hair, makeup, saree. Overall Cannes appearance–below average as always.

    • What do you mean she made a calculated choice ?

      – I was only asking because I thought this was a fashion blog – and didn’t understand how her alleged ‘calculations’ have anything to do with her ‘blah’ fashion choices – please enlighten me !
