In Michael Cinco

Comment image 131

It was all about volume for Ms. Rai at her first appearance on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival who wore a light blue Michael Cinco gown with jewellery from Boucheron and Ferragamo shoes.

While I love the gown itself which was quite exquisite, I was left a bit underwhelmed by the hair and makeup as well as the overall look. It felt too Cinderella attending the ball and not in a good way.

  1. This is a jaw dropping look. She did keep her hair and make up simple, because the gown is so exaggerated and dramatic!! I think she looks magnificent.

    • Why? Is it because this is a look that Sonam has done countless times b4? She wore a practically similar Michael Cinco pink – feathery gown at an award in 2015 or 2016!
      Peace and take it easy!

      • LOL..you gotta take it easy. I am sure you missed the hashtag there. Sonam is great in so many ways but Aishwarya is Aishwarya 🙂

        • Aishwarya is Aishwarya but same goes for Sonam, Sonam is Sonam. They both have unique approach and Outlook towards fashion and also, lets not kid ourselves, both equally replaceable in the world we live in as ambassadors for Loreal. I love this look but I wish it had less Disney princess vibe. Elle Fanning did it so right this time around that I keep comparing all voluminous looks with hers. I had hoped for more and the gown looks pretty generic. But she looks stunning and I find her makeup pretty flawless.

  2. Good grief. It is an absolutely stunning look that needed to be kept simple which she did.

It is getting rave reviews elsewhere. I wonder why that is?

Also why are there better HD red carpet photos on other sites? This red carpet photo does not capture the color and details of the gown.

  3. I want to love it and the gown is beautiful but it’s a little too princessy for me. Also this look has a sense of deja vu as well. Probably the basic hair and no accessories contributing to the lack of novelty.

  4. I have to give props to Indian actress for toning down on makeup and dramatic hair. In past, most of them showed up so costumey. So far kudos to both actors for keeping it classy and not costumey.
Also, have to disagree with your analysis on hair and makeup. She is veteran at cannes, been here so many times so she needs to tone down and do classy. Something like one would expect from Juliana Moore etc.
People esp fashion bloggers should be wholesome in their approach to commentary about clothes, if not commenting on the runway show. Coz it takes into account the person wearing it, their experience, age, how long they been doing it, and that is when it makes the voice stand out.
Just saying, doesn’t mean you guys don’t, you do have balanced voice and do an awesome job.

  5. I think finally L’Oréal got it right with her make up this time at the Cannes … usually they do such garish make up on their spokesmodels ! She looks young here ! The gown !! I dunno … it’s too voluminous !!!
Deepikas gown was stunning but her make up was bad IMO however !

  6. Absolutely stunning! There is no Cannes without Aishwarya Rai! Sooooooo beautiful. One of her best, most ethereal looks. Deepika, who?

  7. Nah. Too Cinderella-y for me. Also, the gown is dramatic and stunning, whereas it should’ve been the other way around, and those adjectives should’ve been used for Ash instead of the dress.

  8. Ethereal! I don’t like the dress at all, but she makes it look great. Love the relatively simpler makeup and hair, especially after last year’s debacle with the purple lips.

  9. Is this the bombshell Donald Trump dropped on Afghanistan? MOAB – Mother of all Bombs! Redefining beauty and grace for the sixteenth time! This is how Aishwarya would look if she played Cinderella. Thank you Aish for showing me how you would look as a disney princess. Cannes Queen has arrived, look at the attention she commands from all the press. Unmatched beauty! Jaw dropping.

  10. Stunning!!
Glad she did not go over board with make up or accessories and kept it classy. She is naturally beautiful and she doesn’t need to pile on make up or go gimmicky & costumey every time in order to put her stamp as a fashionista.

  11. What? This is drama and high fashion and confidence. This is Aishwarya Raj.

Just look at the paparazzi trying to click her and look at Deepika’s pics…camera’s were not even directed towards here. Aishwarya is her senior and agree or not,has been around since a LONG time. She is from the era when there wasn’t much media or promotion when it came to showing off a certain look, or how someone is dressed at an event. She has learnt through trial and error, but she ever fades!

Yes, Deepika looked stunning too and Aishwarya does too. God, she has been around since I was 3, and I am 27 now! No wonder she is the most successful Miss World, EVER!

    • There can be only one of Indian, Asian, Black; Right? For years Americans (esp white people, in general) get blamed for pitching black actress/model vs other ( Tyra/ Naomi, the time when there could only be one black model or actress, then came time only one Indian guy/girl was on tv at a given time and similarly for oriental Asians way back)But now it is much more balanced but still look at their own natives, the amount of pitching and comparison that their own media does is mind blowing.
Both these girls and Sonam coming in are here for the same purpose, Stop trying to pitch them for something as trivial as makeup and hair and clothes. If it was about movies and acting , it is still understandable.
Whenever I observe a group of women, a line from Tina Fey’s book Bossypants comes to mind. where she talks about how in a group of men and women every other person is a competition for a man but for most women the other women are competition first and then come the men. ( not exact words but the crux).
Go easy on your own, people!

These “rivalries” with “Team X” vs. “Team Y” are a creation of the media and PR agencies to make poor folks align themselves with camps so that they can feel like a part of something bigger. But to sensible people, it just looks pathetic.

  16. Underwhelmed by the cinderella gown. Make up was ok. Maybe brighter lips could have helped pop the dull colour of the gown… actually, the colour of the gown is nice but it looks dull on her. And what’s with her pose! why does she pose all confident abroad and ‘innocent, help me’ back home.

  20. It’s a princess look. Do I wish she’d worn a different silhouette-Yes. More serious jewellery like a diamond bracelet bigger ring& a glossier lipstick but these complaints I always have about her looks. Whatever is wrong she is the most beautiful woman there is so that’s that.
Just wish the stylists would use clothes to enhance her beauty. And again why not a major designer? Surely Elie Saab, Valentino, Zuhair Murad, Dior would be dying to dress her.

  23. I agree. Love the gown, she looks great in it. But the hair and makeup fall flat (ha, bad pun). The looks feels very unfinished. I get that she wanted the dress to stand out but a soft updo would have greatly elevated this look.

  24. She looks breathtaking. I especially like how her makeup is modern and understated to balance off the princessy vibes of the dress. A minor peeve though: last year at Cannes she gave beautiful but repetitive appearances and this time I have a feeling it’s gonna be the same :/ All three of her looks have similar Disney princess meets modern world concept

        • +1! Sorry to say this but there is seems to be a bit of a mean girl vibe with some ARB fans when you criticise their idol. Beauty and fashion are subjective and in the eye of the beholder. We don’t all have to agree. Anyway, There are way more beautiful stylish women all over the world than Aishwarya Rai. All Aishwarya’s outfits this year are repetitive, same princess ball gown, with layer(s) that swamp her and the same hands on hip pose.

  27. For me, this look is perfect! The gown brought all the drama that was needed, so the hair, make up and accessories had to be kept very minimal. I was actually hoping she would go for an updo for her appearance but after seeing her look, I was so glad she went with a simple middle-part sleek hair. Honestly can’t fault this look in any way. I know it’s been said innumerably, but this woman is BEAUTIFUL!! And she has the grace and poise to go with her beauty.

This is a stunning gown. Its exquisite with the drama needed for Cannes. They were going for the whole queen of Cannes thing and boy they got it

The hair is too flat though but the impact the whole look was literally show stopping. Noone else needed to turn up!

Can u plz id the lipstick.

  30. First of, that is one dramatic gown. Perfect for Cannes. Hair and make-up are quite boring though. Second, can we please stop with the comparisons? Aishwarya is a model turned actor of 40+ who has been around forever. Dp is a great young actor who has already managed a big bang Hollywood debut which is a huge deal and thanks to which the western media does know her. What’s the point of saying nasty pointless things like “deepika who?”. Vitriol like this gives women a bad name. This site shouldn’t be allowing such crass comments.

  31. Less of Cinderella and more of Thumbellina- in a human sized gown. Big gown needs big hair for balance. Her head is popping out of that gown like a mole in a hole. The gown- and she-deserved better.

  32. The Queen has arrived. That’s the only way to say it. Loved both DP and Ash. Ash truly is Cannes for many of us. Can’t imagine a Cannes festival with her. And does she do justice. Every year she has been upping her game. Love the gown and the whole effect. Not feeling the flat hair (minor gripe) , but yeah overall she looks like a Queen who has come to rule

    • Really, is this language to use on a blog you yourself have opened to read??
So everyone who doesn’t agree with your opinion has ‘gone mad’?
I feel exactly the same way as PnP. The hair and makeup is just disconnected with the dress and the dress itself is nothing more than a princess at a Disney parade.
      Hey look – I must’ve gone mad 😉

  34. I can’t make up my mind whether I like the gown or don’t…it’s a beautiful creation but the volume is putting me off a bit, that said Aishwarya looks ethereal and I particularly like the understated makeup. The color is great on her icy complexion. Also, can be stop the comparisons please..Ash is a Cannes veteran and DP had only her second run this year and she did a terrific impact both with her fashion and her confidence. So can we please stop this hate.

  35. Ash looks WOW!! But I still stick to my comment that Ash really needs to loosen up. For me, her jaw drop moment was the golden dress a few years back. The figure hugging golden dress where she looked like a siren. With these gowns, I feel she repeats herself. It’s like Ash is gorgeous and she wore a great dress blah blah blah…but what about bringing some sexiness to her looks? Why always the prim n proper Ash. Don’t tell me that’s not her style…we’ve seen her super sexy before too.

Comparison with Deepika or Sonam is not fair..she is a veteran and while our other actresses bringing pride to our country have their second or third run at Cannes! So please give it a break!

    Reply
    • Agree that comparison is unnecessary but I am pretty sure the actresses and their teams love it because ultimately it is publicity. Also how are they making our country proud. They are not representing Indian film industry or Indian designers or anything like that. They are there for Loreal which is essentially what Cannes has become – a huge PR opportunity.

  40. Aishwarya is beautiful and she really looks better when she keeps it natural so her makeup in my opinion hasn’t been this good in a while. Now about the gown, the color, shape works. What doesn’t is the volume. The volume is overwhelming her face. Does it look good from afar and in aerial shots, yes. But close ups don’t work because her face looks tiny in comparison to the volume of her dress waist downwards. I wish this was less puffy. I’d give it an 7/10 as a whole but 10/10 for the makeup. I much prefer her Yanina couture day look. It was radiant, simple yet enhanced her beauty and physique.

  41. I don’t understand “Cindrella attending a ball” comments. Can’t cindrella get-up be red-carpet worthy? After all, we have grown up imagining Cindrella to be a gorgeous looking girl! Having said that, we have seen this colour too many times on Aish throughout her Cannes journey so far. YET, she is such a sight to behold!!!! I am glad she kept the makeup & hair simple to let the gown have it’s moment. I really am falling short of words here primarily because she looks like a celestial fairy with that touch of elegance. And what an enviable healthy complexion she has.

  43. Whether she looks like Cinderella or Frozen, or the gown too voluminous or princessy, there is no denying that she working the red carpet and how. It’s not easy to stand out in international red carpets and she has managed to that and that too brilliantly. Cherish the moment where our Indian beauty is being celebrated and loved.

  44. I’m usually lukewarm about Ash’s style but I can’t stop admiring all the pictures of her from different angles in this particular appearance. The way the gown is constructed and the way it fits her is impeccable, so much so that there doesn’t seem to be a single unflattering or bad angle. And in some close ups, the way it matches eyes is just stunning. Incredibly dramatic dress and they styled it just right (not too made up with the hair or heavy with the makeup) to let it shine and make an impact. Might be my favourite look of hers ever! Kudos lady, you scored big on this red carpet.
