Aishwarya at 64th Annual Cannes Film Festival: A First Look

Comment image 95

Wearing a one-shouldered Elie Saab couture gown, Aishwarya kicked off Cannes 2011, which will see a record number of appearances on the red carpet by Bollywood folks.

Coming back to Aishwarya’s appearance, while I love the gown, the do and the simple jewellery look, in some pics the makeup looks greasy. Love her in the bottom right pic though..

  1. Im really not in favor of this gown. Though the color is great on her, the style is quite unflattering. I feel that a gown should look good at every angle, and for some reason this doesnt seem to work the entire time (the last pic for example she looks exhausted). Not a fan of her make up either. Its reminding me of Chelsea Davy from the royal wedding :-/

Shes definitely done better at Cannes before. Hopefully, she will come back with something better!

    • I have to agree. The colour is great but the style is unflattering. Why bring focus to hips when one is curvy?? This style works good on the model because she has no hips.

PS: Thanks for making me work on my math skills.

  2. I disagree!!!!!

She looks fabulous…absolutely gorgeous in most of the pics. why is it that when it comes to her..you guys are so biased? she looks great. the makeup is great as well.

    • It’s you who sounds biased. And a little defensive too. They didn’t say anything that bad about her appearance, just that the makeup is greasy and that it sure is. Also there is nothing so fabulous about this look according to me.

      • Just like “its according to you” I am entitled to my opinion. They are being biased because often, some looks are mediocre and they find the looks Fab…She looks great here..give credit where its due. if not..then let me have my own opinion. Good day!

  3. She looked very mature and beautiful, but I almost felt as though the dress made her look older than she is….mother of the bride look…I was expecting some fabulousness!

    • dont like the hair or make-up, she looks quite bad, and unbeliveable to say, older than she even is!!
the outfit is nice on its own, but doesn’t work on her, maybe some red lips would have worked better.

LET THE MAYHEM BEGIN! SOO MANY STARS THIS YEAR 🙂
This is a boring begining, hope it gets better from now.

      • OMG JUST SAW PICS OF SALMA HAYAK!
        she looks amazing, lovely gown!!!
That is how you do a greyish gown, and she had the red lips!!

The panel has Uma and Salma, nobody else has a chance to steal the show on the red carpet this year, Ash, Sonam, Frieda. Malaika can all try lol.

Why is Ash not with the “Loreal dream team” girls this year, she’s on her own?
It would be nice if someone could answer that question for me, thanks.

  4. Gown is totally a drab. She is looking so tired and fed up Cannes. Her look says …’o god, again cannes..’.

    It might be jetlag.

  5. i would like to see Rekha in this out fit, only bolly actor that can carry off this heavy stuff…it takes over Ash. Sorry Ash. It does not fit with the personality.

  6. You’ve chosen the best pics that can be found. Some others I saw were incredibly unflattering, especially from the back.

Maybe it looks better in person but the gown photographs very dull and drab. It doesn’t suit her figure either.

  7. Don’t like the gown, make-up, hair or the pouting. I’m disappointed because she is such a beautiful woman! Anyway we will see more of Ash in the next few days and I’m sure she won’t dishearten us. I am also looking forward to other Bollywwod celebs as well.

  8. What is missing here is happiness! I dont see any smiles here for being at Cannes. May be she is bored after doing this for 10 years or maybe she is missing hubby and the Bachchans on the red carpet!

  9. I think she looks very unhappy. The makeup is nothing great. The dress and hair do nothing for her. Real disappointment.

  10. One of her regular looks at Cannes…. but if it’s a top and skirt… will it still be called a ‘gown’…. I think she looks a little exhausted…

  11. Nice, but not spectacular. Why would you select a gown that widens the widest part of your body, on such an important red carpet? But it is a great dress to hide the belly, if you have one. She looks exhausted. But loved the photo (not the ones here) from the back where she is looking back sexy into the camera.

  12. Its nice to see an Indian woman over 30 who looks like she eats, as opposed to all the foreign/ mixed ethnicity stick-thin models Bollywood has been throwing at us recently (paired opposite heroes who are always a couple of decades older and a couple of inches shorter! than them).

People get ridiculously over-critical when it comes to Ash at Cannes, so I’m not surprised by the negativity here. I think she looks beautiful, and her dress might not be spectacular, but its perfectly acceptable and does not distract from her loveliness in anyway.

    • I agree Chocolate Martini. I am not an Ash fan, but she does look gorgeous here. I think it’s simple, elegant, and almost understated. Not everyone has to be a fashion daredevil like Sonam Kapoor.

      Reply
    • Yay for what you said on women who eat 🙂

I think she looks fabulous and the dress does flatter her – I don’t get the bit about parts of the body looking wide. Uh. The phrase “womanly figure” comes to mind

The dress is beautiful and she carries it well (saw a picture of it on the runway on another site and the model who was a smaller size than Ash did not make the dress shine as much) – i think it is her curves that make the look

      Reply
      • Just realized that the picture of the runway is here too…oops!
either way in comparison I think Aishwarya carries it better because the detail around the waist sort of hangs on the model rather than frame the hips

Also – Elie Saab can do little wrong for me so I guess I’m a bit biased 🙂

        • I agree ash is filling out the dress a lot better than the emaciated looking model on the left. The gowns beautiful and I think its actually flattering on her figure for once epecially when compared to previous years and dresses she’s worn.

  13. I am so proud of her. Great job Aishwarya. Top Notch fashion diva, don’t let anyone tell you differently. This one is a breed apart from her wanna-bes.

  14. she looks beautiful as always..i just don’t think the gown is age appropriate, it definitely ages her and up close the makeup is unfortunately caked on and also ages her. I just don’t think people understand that Aishwarya is a beautiful women and she looks amazing with moisturized skin, a touch of foundation buffed into her skin and of course the usual eyes/lips. I hope for the upcoming days her makeup artist uses a lighter hand

  15. She looks tired and that colour makes her look dull.
Maybe she came because she had a professional commitment vs. wanting to be there.
She looked fantastic in 2006 and 2007 @cannes.
maybe she will surprise us later.

  16. she is amazing … thats a real women …

stop judging and all the negetivity in here … a real woman is the one with curves .. shes been in the business since over 15 years .. tell me one contemporary actress who has succes rate as her … international brands adore her .. look at her association with longines and lorel its over a decade .. she dint need to marry rich and old , or tote arround hermes birkin to get a picture in press

god has bestowed her the most stunning female face in the decades .. her beauty stands out in a million crowd ..hands down she is the only female indian actress in the history of indian cinema who has an aura arround her … besides srk and sr bachan no one else has that kind of superstar status.

i do agree may be the make up is little dull .. may be its the intention of the make up artist .. thats what his vision could be …

when vouge editor in chief ms priya tanna was asked .. if she could select just one face on vouge india for the rest of life .. with out a blink she replied its aishwarya .. mike ruize said she is the most stunning face he ever shot .. this is the same guy who shot whos who of hollywood ..

we should embrace and akowledge the fact that woman is succesful than any of us and make us as the citizens of india proud on an international platform at any given opportunity .. instead of criticizing for not being thin or bad choice of that and that and that …

to set the record st8 .. she dont pick any of clothes or make up .. there is a team which put together stuff for the red carpet .. they know better than we all here sit and type on our notebooks .

    • This site is about giving ones “own fashion” views on a stars clothes/hair/make-up, the whole look. It has nothing to do with personality or a stars achievements.

Just because you wear a boring outfit and someone says so, doesn’t reflect on your career as an entertainer at all.

You should watch the Hollywood “fashion Police” type shows, they really do trash a celeb who wears an unflattering outfit.

Lastly every BIG STAR has a right to say NO to an outfit 🙂

    • Goodness Ronan, you have no idea of the history of Indian cinema, and this site is about fashion, not one’s beauty or career.

    • Most people on this blog are commenting about her fashion choices and not on her achievements. Almost everyone agrees that she is one of the most stunning beauties, but very often her dress sense and style do not match her face – and that is what surprises so many people. Having been the in the business for so long, with so much money and with access to the top designers, Ash should not be making these mistakes as often as she does.

  17. I saw close up of the photos on another site and her make up looks really bad, especially the horrible green eye shadow. L’Oreal should immediately fire the make up artist who did her make up. The problem I have with Ash is that it appears she does not give any input or voice an opinion on issues like hair, make up or the outfit at any of these events. It is like she wear what ever they give her. I think she would have done a better job on the make up and hair herself.

    Reply
    • Actually I think this is exactly Ash’s own style sense. She tends to stick to safe and slightly boring outfits even in general. I don’t think anyone else chose her Oscar gown but it was the same problem. She’s never been a fashionista and this is as good as it’s ever going to get as far as she’s concerned.

When she was younger, her beauty was so overpowering that all her bad fashion and make-up choices never mattered much. Unlike other women, I think she never developed that sense of wearing what’s flattering to yourself and how to make the best of your flaws because she never really needed to bother with it. Now that she’s aging in appearance and doesn’t have a great body, those lack of skills are really affecting her.

  19. I don’t really mind what she’s wearing it’s ok and I love her hair and the accessories. The makeup is ok I think and the color of the dress is nice as well. However what I think is missing from the pictures is spunk. She has no energy about her, no spark in her eyes, no flirtation with the camera’s, no giggles no mirth. If she was on a stage and this was a performance she looks like she was dragged onto that stage. No matter how tired or jet lagged she is, she is an actress, she should act when she’s in public. IMO she is self conscious… I just don’t sense confidence in these pictures (body confidence). That is something that she usually has at Cannes regardless of her shape she’s still been able to work it in the past and looked like she felt good about herself!

  20. She looks average she should opted for some colourful gown. This gown looks plain & too simple and neither helps with her figure.

p.s: Looks like there r some crazy fans of aishwarya who can’t hear nothing -ve about her.
This is a fashion site & when aishwarya has not dressed up to her potential people will definitely say that, and before reading others comments u should bear that in mind or else better not read any comments 🙂

  21. The gown looks so nice on the model, but not so much on Aish.
Maybe one needs that delicate young look like the model to make it look nice.
I am not saying aish is fat in anyway, just somehow she isnt carrying this gown well.
The gown is making her look older and all the posing she is doing seems quite harsh!

  22. the dress looks great on her, infact it looks a thousand times better on her than on the model there. The make up is too heavy and still makes her look sort of dull, she is a beautiful woman, she doesnt need a heavy hand in the makeup dept, a nice light younger makeup and hair and she would have nailed it.

Change your hair and makeup artists ,Ash

  27. What surprises me most is the fact that ‘non-Indian’ blogs have gone gaga over her flawless make up and Elie Saab gown.. But what do I see here? A slew of negative comments! Come on ladies SHE is the face of Indian cinema in the international arena.. Cut her some slack. She’s got a full figure and she carries the dress beautifully.. The make up was meant to be nude beachy look from loreal’s new collection.

  28. For the first time I can say she doesnt look beautiful…the makeup and her expressions is not good. Unless its just plan bad photography.

  29. She comes from a country that explodes with colour and pattern everywhere one looks, and this is all the stylist could come up with? Surely there is some Indian designer somewhere, who can marry the two and come up with something more edgy and exciting than this porridgy greige concoction.
Manish Arora is feted the world over for his sense of design, and yet I’ve not seen a single Indian star dare to wear his clothes, only to go all out pandering to bland European designers. It’s all just a question of *wanting* to look beyond the Armanis and Saabs, which unfortunately seem to be the high-water mark for red carpet fashion.

    • When Salma Hayek makes an appearance, do we expect to see only Mexican clothes?
When Penelope Cruz makes an appearance, is she supposed to wear only spanish?
Or is Kate Winslet always supposed to be British??

If we extend your logic, no American star should wear anything from outside of USA, not even Indian designers (including Manish Arora!)

      Did I get it wrong?

      • fair enough, but consider a Fan Bing Bing, who wears Chinese-inspired/influenced outfits on international red carpets and STILL hits it out of the ballpark everytime

        • But again, she is not representing India there!
When Gieselli (from Love Ajkal) and Barbara Mori are in India, we feel better at seeing them in Indian inspired clothes. Would the west not deserve equal treatment?

And she does wear Indian clothes when she represents India (first appearance in a yellow sari, several appearances last year while doing the Ravanan press).

  31. Okay, now everytime she has to make an international appearance, she mechanically reaches out for all the western haute couturers. the dress is heavenly beautiful, but on her, the look looks so…deja vu-ish.
also, she tries *too* much. the too much posing, the too much effort to look ‘international’. all very fake.

  32. Nothing wrong with her curves, so everyone’s who is going berserk here thinking that the world is criticising her weight should take it easy.

But yes, the gown is making her look dumpy – the whole silhouette plus the make-up makes her look 50ish.

You know what this two-tiered dress reminds me off – the Sri Lankan saree with the pleats in the middle, it really adds on weight to a person where none is necessary.
