She looks better in the dress than the saree me thinks. The heavy blouse makes her look… well, heavy. She should’ve opted for a different blouse.

The Abu Sandeep outfit is HIDEOUS! Trust Aishwarya to pick the worst clothes available. It’s so unflattering. It makes her look bigger and fatter than she actually is. Yuck.

The other dress is quite nice. Casual and perfect for the balcony.

I don’t agree with you on trust Aishwarya to pick the worst clothes available. Sadly Aishwarya and the Bachchans are very loyal to Abu Sandeep. They cannot even seriously be considered designers after what I’m seeing above. The top is way too masculine it looks like men’s wear! I like the dress below though. Hoping to see something better tomorrow!

This is a new low after the disaster that was her 2003 Cannes appearance. Even her beautiful face is not enough to distract from the monstrosity that is her Abu Deep dress.

Beautiful woman! Nothing anybody can do about that ;-) She may have lost a bit of her figure, but she will get it back. Those dresses look like what many new mothers would feel comfortable in, especially if they know they are being talked about.

    1. Kanchanmasi at | | Reply

Totally! She wears traditional Indian after years at Cannes because it covers up so well and the black cardigan over the dress to cover her arms. Wow she would never have dressed like this pre-baby. It’s nice to know even the most beautiful woman in the world is after all only human like all of us!

Holy mother of God! Motherhood suits her! She looks amazing! I was thinking it would be some boring Abu-sandeep anarkali which would look like a tent but this outfit is amazing! So is the ombré dress! Lovely!!!

Her styling in Abu sandeep is really good and its very realistic to have that baby weight post pregnancy, but weight does not suit her. I can see she camouflaged it well.

    1. swati at | | Reply

I wager that it is not simply her new size. Her body language, expressions, posing style have all changed. In all her preg and post baby pics she looks self conscious (not that I blame her) and it detracts from her beauty.

I was waiting for her arrival at Cannes to see how well/un- well she would fare.
Her make up is impeccable and so is her hair do but the ever so heavy blouse ; reminds me of the the Michael Jackson military jacket.
The blouse is very un-flaterring … and does nothing for the the new momsy.
Why o Why Ash did you have to do this?
I would have loved to see her in a a demure simple plain chiffon saree ( or any flowy material) with a simple light full-sleeved blouse.
Anyways hoping that she still has the something up in her kitty to Wow her fans.

She looks ridiculous in the sari.. why add bulk? And really ridiculous how her PR keeps feeding these weight controversy articles. You built a career out of looking good.. so yeah.. try to look good. Stop hiding and whining. And P.S you can look good at any size.. just dress properly. The problem is not being fat here.. the problem is she is ashamed of it. Be a woman, for chrissakes!

    1. Jyoti at | | Reply

Oh foe heavens sake … U misread and basically read what u want to … The fact that she has been quiet throughout when the world has been screaming fat at her, and gone about her duties as brand ambassador, without any sorry interviews about yes I am trying, maybe I had a bad pregnancy and/or childbirth …. That is enough reason to know she really doesn’t give a rats to what the world is saying about her figure!
Trust the Indians to talk to talk top rubbish when we shud be adulating her for being such a complete woman , Baby, career, a few extra pounds et all…

      1. kasthuri at | | Reply

I agree with u Jyoti ! It takes a lot of courage to make an appearance on the red carpet and do your duties under such pressure.
I am also glad that all through her pregnancy and now she dressed dignified. It maynot be best fashion choices but it was comfortable and decent. No unneccessary cleavage, no tight clothes, no heels etc. She keeps her class always. That sets her apart.

Adulate her for being a complete woman? Every woman I meet is a complete woman.. Is it ok to gain 30 pounds in the army or as a pilot or as a flight attendant? She is in showbiz. Showbiz has its rules. Kajol, Lara Dutta.. they are graceful and confident. Aishwarya – not so much. Does she look confident to you?? Really?

You try being in the limelight infront of billions and in the recent past insulted and ridiculed for your weight gain post pregnancy. Honestly I’m surprised and impressed that Ash even made it to Cannes with all the scrutiny on her weight. And now that she’s not dressing accordingly to her type, or isn’t flashing in her signature confident smile according to some, she’s still being criticized! Leave the poor woman alone, and just give her props for being there. Honestly anyone in her position right now would not be confident and out flaunting her body regardless of its size. And even if Ash was confident in her post pregnancy body, I’m sure she isn’t now since her weight gain has become a global issue.

    3. appletini at | | Reply

@Vidhya: Very well said. I’m completely with you on this. For someone who has made her entire career on a tag that doesnt even make sense or hold good, I think its just fair people criticize when you arent well..”perfect” anymore..why put yourself in a pedestal in the first place? When the bouquets were flowing in, nobody complained, so please take the brickbats gracefully as well.
That said, she does look really pretty in the maxi.

      1. lea at | | Reply

She was pregnant, for God’s sake! yeah, she isn’t stick thin, but she looks amazing even with the extra pounds!

She didn’t put herself on the pedestal, but we did, the Indian public, the media, the 17 000 websites that appeared in honor of her beauty!!

When she looked good or was younger she wasn’t criticised? you’re wrong, her haters always doubted about her natural beauty, but she stood strong, like she is now, too!

If she was still part of showbiz, it would have been unforgivable to gain so much weight, but she’s on leave. I think it took a lot of confidence to appear at Cannes not looking like a model anymore.

She looks way better than I feared, I was expecting much worse…those Mukesh Ambani after-party photos had me thinking of her health, but I think she’s fine…

The maxidress looks casual and lovely on her, her hair and make-up perfect.

But that Abu Sandeep jacket is weird looking to say the least…the sari is lovely, but matched with a black blouse it could have been perfect…

        1. Adara at | | Reply

Well summarized, Lea! It’s the Indian public who do so much drama and put people on pedestals/build temples.

  17. PrincessRuchi at | | Reply

This is a fashion blog. Aishwarya’s outfit is horrid. No logic of “dress for your shape” has been applied. Why? I don’t know!

Disappointing. Its not about having a pretty face. Its about Fashion.

    1. just me at | | Reply

Have to jump onto this comment PrincessRuchi – you said it!(i.e. regarding the Abu Sandeep number; the dress was too meh to merit comment)!

IMO Ash’s face is (as always) beautiful but then one looks down and THAT eyesore hits, and hurts! What on earth is that blouse? It looks like a decorative armor plate – is she off to do battle!?

It’s not about thin, fat, size 0 or 18 – but as PrincessRuchi said, it’s about dressing for your shape. I doubt anyone on here goes to a designer and says – make me look bigger/bulkier (unless you meant specific parts of your figure that you want enhanced!) I assume most of us would say – make me an outfit that enhances/underplays/makes me look tall/ curvy/ slim/ hourglass etc. etc – but I doubt someone would say – make me look bulky. From that horrendous pink salwar Ash wore to an event, to this golden-warrior outfit, her designers/stylists have let her down by time and again drowning her in yards of quite garish fabric that make her look so boxy when she’s so not!

It’s to Ash’s credit, that inherent grace and carriage she has, that there are still many who admire this look. Can’t wait to see her in some silhouettes and makeup that play up her face and figure.

      1. just me at | | Reply

Just wanted to add – my criticism of the outfit aside, must applaud Ash for looking so calm and collected, when she must know how much this/all her looks will be dissected in sites around the world! I know she’s been in the limelight for ever and may be used to it, but still it’s quite the pressure when there’s been so much talk about your figure! And I speak from experience – having always been the one to stand at the end of the school assembly line all through my school life ( we used to be lined up shortest to tallest), I got so used to the hurtful (hackneyed) jeers of – giraffe, lamp post, feet like a man etc. that kids dispense with such careless cruelty. At parties, I would wear long, loose/shapeless maxis hoping to cover my awkward limbs and hoping no one would notice me! Thankfully I moved to a new environment, and with age/maturity learned how to appreciate what I had and instead of hiding myself, I now walk tall and proud (at least I try!) My point is, as much as Ash may not care/try not to care about the remarks about her shape, at some point it does get to one and so I give her full props for not being afraid to step out in the face of criticism. Sorry for blathering on…I say this because criticizing one’s sartorial choices/personality is one thing but when it comes down to disparaging comments about physical appearance/looks, that’s hurtful in a whole different kind of way.

        1. PrincessRuchi at | | Reply

          Like! :)

        2. S at | | Reply

I so agree with you, just me. I’ve had the same disparaging, thoughtless and hurtful height comments all my life. And we’re so damn used to commenting on the physical appearance of e-ve-ry-one in Indian culture. People snap open their mouth like thát. You’d think that with all the supermodels galore in movies and advertisements, height would be a desirable thing, but nooo. And of course, equally disparaging comments are made about short girls as well.
Oh and when a compliment is obviously to be made, you’ll often meet with silence instead!

Whew. Having said that, I think Ash’s gold outfit is quite odd. It’s non-plain but it’s now ‘wow!’, which makes it catch the eye in a bad way. The flowy number works much better for her figure. As for her curves; keep ’em and hold your head high! She’s just had a baby for christ’s sake.

The blouse is another matter altogether. What a way to ruin the beautiful the Lucknowi chikan saree. It makes her look boxy.
Why doesn’t she get that covering yourself with so many layers (ever since the Elie Saab in the first trimester) just make you look even heavier. She is a glowing new mom, so it is fine with putting on the pounds, but there is no reason to dress matronly. Confidence with curves is what is missing here.

I do like the maxi look.

She is glowing. But I continue to be baffled by some of her sartorial choices? Why add bulk? The sari is beautiful, and would’ve looked smashing with a lighter blouse. Much prefer the second look.
She’s got to stop looking so uncomfortable with the extra weight. She had a baby, it’s fiiiiine. It wouldn’t be commented upon if she wore the right clothes/had the confidence to carry them off.

  31. aalia at | | Reply

the makeup is flawless and she looks stunning. the hair is nice too but the outift is appalling and should be set on fire. ok so she has a tummy but she has lost that ash spark- the confidence, the smile- its all gone. ok so she isnt 26, she is abit overweight but still, she could have done alot better.

a chiffon saree, open hair, a smile- can still be sexy even on a curvy woman, it really is all about attitude and i really hope she is happier tomorrow. but that hideous designer duo has to go. her chest looks droopy, her tummy area is actually enhanced coz of the stiff material and lack of fall of the material and her hands look bigger than they actually are. she is dressed badly- its only that gorgeous face that salvages anything from the outfit.

  32. crab at | | Reply

She looks beautiful neck up, but I don’t like the first outfit at all. She could have done so much better. I don’t get why people hide their curves so desperately. Come on, Ash! You’re a new mom. Flaunt that glow. Wear something less bedouin-ish.

The second one is just ugly. The lack of color and oomph…with that eye-sore of a cardigan…not working.

I absolutely love Ash’s make-up. Such a beautiful face needs minimum make-up. It’s perfect in both pics. Western wear is lovely. Contrary to most comments I like the saree blouse, workmanship is amazing, just not the longer sleeves, . The saree is gorgeous as well. good to see that she has made an effort (with help of course) . My only gripe is she looks a little unhappy/uncomfortable. Overall, I like.

  37. Bsimple at | | Reply

I feel the problem with the blouse is it would have been perfect had it sat just where the sari’s pleats get tucked in i.e. just slightly below the tummy and then it would not have looked half as bad (think Kajol in her red dress in the song Bole Chudiyan from K3G)…Other than that, she looks at peace :)

  44. Myla at | | Reply

I’m NOT considering her weight gain at all, we ALL go through it and its fine. Women should never be made to feel like they should fit into ONE mould. Having said that, I found both the outfits underwhelming. The first one, the blouse is a bit MUCH. Too busy, too distracting. The second one is something I would wear to go for coffee with someone during PMS days whenever everything hurts. However, above and beyond that, Ms Bachchan Rai does not look too happy (not that I blame her, considering the media attention on her recently, ANY WOMAN would have been daunted), but a happy smile would have said ‘I-am-thrilled-to-me’ and shut everyone up and improved her appearances by several points.

  45. Leila at | | Reply

She looks regal, great hair and makeup! A boat neck and 3/4 sleeves would’ve really elevated the look though. As is, she looks too covered up. Her forearms are still quite delicate looking, it’s a shame they’re covered up. Overall, I like this appearance, at least it’s not dowdy.

P.S. I’ve been following this blog for over two years now. Got to say everything I know about Indian fashion, I learnt from this blog! :)

Leaving aside the clothes, she looks so uncomfortable in the pictures! I understand that shes defensive about her weight in the wake of the national uproar over it, but she needs to see that the only way to silence those idiots is to flaunt her curves and be proud of them! Im a new mom, and if you can look past my dark circles, I am actually so proud that I.Have.A.Cleavage! We all need to take a page from Lara Ds book- learn to look cool, confident, sexy and HAPPY to be a MOM! That said, Aishwarya, you are NOT your mother-in-law, god forbid, so are not obliged to wear this design label. There is a time to be matronly, this is not it!

    1. eclat at | | Reply

      But her face… so lovely!

  47. Zara at | | Reply

It’s insane how young she looks in the casual dress. Aishwarya has such strong features that super glamorous makeup tends to give her a harsh appearance, which is why I’m not a fan of the gala look. But she looks gorgeous in the other outfit, and I’d say part of it is due to the fullness she’s gained in her face.

I don’t agree with others saying that she needs to dress in more figure-flattering outfits – this isn’t a case of an individual who doesn’t know how to dress their normal body type. Aishwarya was a relatively slim woman who just had a baby – she’s trying to dress a body type that she didn’t have before. I doubt she’s all that comfortable at her current weight, and certainly the ridiculous media scrutiny can’t be helping. For god’s sake, let the woman wear whatever the hell she wants.

Unlike other people here, I love the Abu Sandeep look. The blouse is not adding weight. It is actually hiding, and in a very beautiful way, the flab that might be there on the tummy. I think her sari blouse is too heavy and makes her look boxy, so it’s not flattering. The maxi dress looks good on her and she looks youthful. I think it’s fine to cover yourself up but too much just makes one look like a big blob. She could’ve shown some neck or some leg (in western wear) but it seems that she prefers to hide everything from neck down. All her outfits since giving birth indicate that.

Frankly this is much better than I was expecting as I though Abu Jani would have done some striped anarkali for her or something. Her face is looking gorgeous and yes takes guts to be at Cannes post baby and stuff! I am ok with the whole concept of the coatee as a blouse but this yolk thingy on the coatee is a bad idea and Abu Sandeep should have known better. Also white is a lovely colour but this is Cannes and you can wear brighter bolder colours, plus Ash looks great in most colours. The saree could have been in a bright pink or something and the coatee could have been in white/gold to offset this. I also wish she had worn some of those GINORMOUS solitaires that she has and also worn like a 45 carat rock on her finger to be like: ‘hey yeah I have some post baby weight but I look fab in my sari and diamonds!’ :)

It looks all ethnic so I guess it’s a good choice if she wants to completely cover up. Yes, it could be more flattering but I don’t think she’s ready for it.

The sari/blouse outfit makes her look like a jazzy upscale womens prison warden. Perhaps for the womens politician wing of Tihar Jail!
The maxi dress is safe and not bad, but it is something many women in the west go to the store in. Not glam.
Weight is what it is. Tis ok to be chub after the birth of a baby, but please dress for the weight.
    Her make is passable.

Let me try putting things in perspective for you. i have a birthday party to attend tomorrow evening and thanks to Mumbai’s crazily humid summer and my incessant mango consumption, i suddenly have a zillion zits on my face. And i am freaking out about having to socialize when im not looking my best. Multiply the (i) importance of the social event; and (ii) teh requirement to look stunning by about gazillion and then- imagine what Ash is going through. i think she is a rockstar for having the guts to show the world that she’s not just a face/body. Ive actually never liked her too much earlier- but now i have to admit that the girl has spunk!

Agree with you! I have begun to like this woman now!

This is Aishwarya giving no f***s about what anyone thinks of her weight.

She obviously knows she’s heavier than she’s been over time, and yet she selects clothes that she likes, regardless of whether they make her look more or less heavy. Good on you, lady.

Poor woman. She never gets it right. I don’t know why everyone’s going on about how new a mom she is. It’s been 8 months or so. Not that everyone needs to drop weight in a day – just that the term ‘new mom’ doesn’t apply after the first 5 months or so. Then you’re just another mom who hasn’t bothered to lose weight (like me!).
The blouse should have been shorter and less embellished. Adds too much bulk. That high neck only suits a slim frame. She should have had an nice scoop neck. Now that heavy fabric adds bulk over the pleats. The western outfit is far more suitable if rather uninteresting.
Also, I think people who make their name based on their looks (because her acting talent is suspect) are well aware of how much criticism they will get if they lose them – in this case, her figure. I wish her luck with her weight loss as well as her wardrobe. I’ve just made peace with my own!

It is a shame that despite being a mom you think the only reason one doesnt loose weight is coz ‘they didnt bother’. Ever heard of Post pregnancy complication.
It is the high rise of urban so called wannabe intellectuals women like you who create nonsense around..shame!

I see.. I didn’t realise you were a close friend, hence aware of the post pregnancy complications. From where I come, its just called baby fat. And you can choose to lose it or not. But if you come out on the red carpet, then you’re no longer asking to be left alone, you’re willing to be in the media glare, wearing the most expensive designer wear in town. This is a fashion blog and the way she dresses will be under scrutiny. Her pregnancy complications (if she has any) should be in an agony aunt column, not discussed here. Not even sure if she’ll thank you for creating a complication – she might have none.
Also, its a pity you can’t focus on the discussion at hand but have got personal.

Aishwarya looks poised & graceful in the gown/maxi. I’m not in favour of her first look though. The blouse is overdone & doesn’t accentuate her breathtaking beauty.

Anyone in their right mind knows that you wear a high neck only if you have a very slender neck. If you’re even a little bit on the heavier side, then a high neck only makes you look bulkier. Much bulkier.

I cant forgive that designer duo for doing this to her. She’s just a bit over weight and that didn’t mean she couldn’t have gone in looking confident, glamourous and happy. They made her look like a teapot and that’s unforgivable.

I change my mind about this outfit. Just yesterday I was saying I didn’t like it and now I kind of feel like I need to give props to her for trying something different. She shocked most people because no one would expect her to wear something like this and for the first time in a very long time she took a big fashion risk so I’m going to give her some credit for that. But Aish, please don’t wear this again, give it to charity. Thanks.

that hairstyle in the black dress does not suit her.
too much makeup which she doesnot need (but her hands look nice :-) ).

looks lik the first time she went, except as mrs india, not miss!
the black shot has been slimmed and distributed.
the red carpet they couldnt do that!!

    1. ab at | | Reply

LOL in that case they clearly forgot to slim her arms in the close up because they look ginormoussss, camouflaged by the black cardigan and photoshop her puffy eyes.

Ok she looks good in the maxi dress balcony pic, relaxed and nice, i wish she had skipped what looks like along cardigan on her dress in the balcony shots.

As for the first, a mandarin collared heavily embroidered blouse is something not many call pull off and its doesnt look good on her with that hair and makeup makes her face and neck look bigger than they are. I saw Aish, love your curves, wear some low next dresses and dont wear any salwars with duppatas looking like bedsheets or sarees which do you no service.

love your boobilicious figure woman! and flaunt it!

    dear ARB,

aint nothing wrong in being “fat” (i am your size and i dont even have a baby). but theres a lot wrong if you wear such HIDEOUS tacky clothes and wear such shitty makeup.

then again if you WANT to look like a character from an ektaa kapoor tv show, then more power to you.
