kashish: this dress definitely not transparent. Those are just folds/pleats. Go see a close up of the pictures in the getty website.
I think gowns look better on women with some curves. Otherwise the clothes just hang like on a clothes hanger. See Cate Blanchett curves in her gown.

There is a satin lining underneath the silk georgette. Maybe it’s the camera flashes giving the effect of transparency around the bust.
